Title: Other hobbies/past times
Post by: knorB on August 20, 2024, 07:24:15 AM
My wife's niece and family showed up last weekend for a visit. Her husband lost his dad last year they are/were both motorcycle guys and rode together quite often. They had often talked about taking a trip down here and riding The Tail of the Dragon. Sadly, that never happened. So, I was happy to oblige and honored when asked if I'd ride it with him.

His bike on the left mine on the right.

Sadly, we found out this was added to 45 min or so before we arrived.

Gentlemen know you and your bikes limitations. Ride your pace, stay safe and enjoy the ride.

Sorry about the PIC size i forgot to edit it after uploading.

I should wreck there and leave behind a mask, snorkel, and 1980s rocket fins.    c

Last time I posted my other hobbies on the internet I got censored  :bolt:  Crazy you can't post pictures on the internet of dead animals without getting attacked.  Heck, you can't post anything without getting attacked anymore  :rofl

Right now most of my money goes towards playing live music.  You know the vicious cycle of a musician never satisfied with the way they sound  :rofl.  Will try to post some pictures later!

It's not just musicians. Pick just about anything. As an example, you can fish for cheap. Then its upgrade the rod and real. Then its if I had a John boat.  That escalates into if I had a bass boat... ya know I need a rig to pull it.

So I get ya.

Wife says I'm too old to ride. I don't agree with that but the people here drive like nuts. Maybe I'll get another Harley when they're giving them away. Paint Indian on the tank.

I drew my beloved 109 today  :devil

It's sort of based off a model my brother bought me I have yet to finish. A 109g10.

So getting back into art again I suppose.  Practicing drawing a lot of planes. I think I'll do a p47 next.

Thanks! I took your advice and started drawing more prop planes. Using a 3d model helps a lot more than images for reference

Latest addition.

Nothing special Blue Print 350, turbo 350 and 3.73 gears.
My plan is to put a 700r4 in it because 2500rpm at 55 mph is deafening.
Next QA1 control arms and adjustable coil overs for the front
Qa1 adjustable rear shocks with Calvert racing monoleaf and their version of traction bars.  Super adjustable.

I spent the last couple of years on a new hobby for me, creating this motorcycle build:

1988 Honda Shadow VT1100C "Spirit"

Did my first test ride with it in mid August 2024, and up until now I have got a little over 300 miles on it. No issues, handles beautifully and got just enough power to be fun to ride also.
I am happy with it.  :aok

I know, it is not a Harley. Maybe I'll get a Harley next time, I know for sure I want to build more bikes now!  :rock

A lotta pride in building your own. It evolves into a piece of you. Doesn’t matter what brand name.

My first bike in the 70s was a Triumph 750 I tore down and restored as it was when it was new.

My second bike in 83 was Harley. it was winter and out of room in garage and shop, I literally tore it down and rebuilt in my bedroom, except paint. I had a large bed room.

Harleys in the day were much cheaper and many customized them from basket cases. Today Harley dies the paint and chrome themselves and slaps a warranty on it that discourages customizing it and way over priced because it became a status symbol for weekend warriors when HD took it back from AMD.

Brand name doesn’t matter. Building your own is a deeper extension of yourself. It becomes as much fun as riding it.

I got the bug and built 2 others for friends.

Thats a damn good looking bike. Great job. I care less about brand name.

Nice old skewl hardtail. Looks like a raked FE with 8” over tubes? Short straights. Like my first bike, I woke up the town. I can tell by the colors of the exhaust you have some riding time on it.

Another great job.

Thanks guys. It was a fun project, alot of hours went on speculating and planning at first. Most of the first year actually went by with just that, changing ideas on how I actually wanted this bike to look like.

The seat was definitely the most work with, especially since I have never tried leatherwork before. I also had to purchase all of the tools I needed, most of it online so months passed there also. Simply by waiting for parcels to arrive..
But in total actual working hours I spent about a week making that seat, and believe it or not it was the hand-stitching that took the most amount of time. Not the actuall stamping of the patterns and crafting of the leather itself.

Also the tool bag infront of the frame, I made that right after I finished the seat. Even if it is a Honda, I might still need some tools. You never know, right?  :D
You know what HONDA stands for btw? Harley Owners Need Durable Alternatives   :rofl :bolt:

Then I spent alot of time on how I wanted to mount the rear fender, if it should go on the frame or the swingarm. And how the brackets should look.. I went with something solid, 5mm steel plate in a curved shape, cut holes in it kinda similar to the holes in the front brake disk. And powder coated these brackets to get a lasting strong finish.

The plan later is to make some snap-on frame-extention brackets to mount a similar rear seat coushin and a sissy bar, maybe some time during this winter. I need somewhere to strap my backpack when I go for longer trips next summer.  :aok

This is not a finished project, it might never be. But I can drive it now, and enjoy it. There is one thing I discovered after 300+ miles on it, I need to put some more padding into the seat. So I purchased a seat pad made out of very soft gel, that I can cut into shape with scissors. So I am going to cut open the stitching on the rear part of the seat and fit the gel pad in under the leather and stitch it back together.

Here are a couple of more pictures from some other angles of the bike..

Yes. In this case they balance the view. Wouldn’t put them on every bike, they belong on this one.

Never heard of it. Maybe thats why I had too bad accidents. Yet survived to irritate people. Or did I? And this is hell. Deep thoughts.

Be careful out there.

Prolly one of the most epic rides on a bike.
