A weekend visit was a regular occurrence for us back in the 90's. I can't recall a single time we went back home empty handed. Did you know there is still one open? Oregon.
-
I managed one for two years.
-
I didn't rewind the last few tapes I rented.
I rented Animal House about once a year along with Amadeus. Weird combo.
-
Great way to try out Sega video games b4 you purchased them..

I believe it's in Sandy if I recall? Use drive by it a bunch. But was too far too rent anything and have to drive by it.
I certainly miss it. Something about going in there and seeing all the movies. I use to love that you could rent video games too.
Was sad when they all started closing.

Not quite the same but related. I had read a brief blurb that red box was getting ready to fold. The main reason was the competition from streaming services. I haven't used them for a couple years now after one of the operators of a franchise tried to rip me off on a movie disk.

Going to the movie theater isn't/wasn't really a social event but it was more so than streaming a movie at home. Renting movies at the video store still shared some of common experience. Of course now even when you're out in public you're still alone with so many focused on their phones. This is not a good thing.

Some time in the 90s, I got a letter from some collections agency demanding something like $3.75 for some BB vid I didn't even remember.
Chucked it in the trash and never went back :rofl

If you wanted to get permanently banned from one you rented a porn and put tape over the little hole on the tape so it would let you record over it, and then record over it with a church sermon. They dont like that very much

I'm extremely confused right now.

Well, it was a blue building, guess we know what that means.
We should waterboard them for answers. Pretty sure this has something to do with the spider monkey army on mars. <confident nod>
Those bastages! Be angry, be very very angry.
Not only did I refuse to rewind tapes, I sat in my car in the front parking spot, for 2 hrs, with my reverse lights on.
<proudly goose-steps out of room, leaving the lights on>
< drops to knees with pleading arms> WHY!!!

The past always looks better when the future appears bleak. One reason for that, at least for me, is that the past is fixed and cannot change. That makes it reliable.

A generic one (it went out of business a while back)

Mclean had a “video world” and they had videos lined up across the tops of book shelfs like dominos.
Yep, vhs tapes Do act like dominos.
-
Mid 80's there were stores off base on Okinawa that functioned as a video tape library. Pay a monthly fee and check out 3 videos at a time. All were bootleg videos. Many from movies that hadn't made it to tape yet.
