It was strange driving through riviera beach after securing the house and seeing zero hurricane preparations having been performed.

The hurricane winds were blowing hard and it looked like looters were prepositioning themselves……by walking aimlessly around the streets.

It looked like the aftermath of a hurricane that hadn’t yet done it’s damage.

Some of us are not too worried about the news over hyping a hurricane that is hitting some 300 miles away to be fair.
All its going to do to the east coast is dump a bunch of rain.

Winds get all the hype but the real damage is done by the flooding. Better to be prepared for the worst.

The 1900 Galveston Tx hurricane killed a lot of people. I bet they would have liked to have been warned.

Every time I see the proverbial “we’ll be fine…” I think of this story 👇. I’m not sure why it comes to mind, I’ve spent plenty of time tuna fishing and I guess it’s because I’ve seen a lot of close calls that could have gone the other way.

Why I watch local news, BBS or NPR. 'Just give me the raw facts and shut it.' :) As soon as it turns to hysteria and opinion it's no longer news.

Just left my home in Weaverville NC luckily no severe damage just a lot of fallen trees, the rivers in western NC and eastern TN have totally wiped out houses and businesses, some of the small river towns are completely gone, my wife stayed at our home in Florida (gulf coast) while i was winterizing NC home and she was more worried for me, Asheville river arts district, Biltmore village, Swannanoa, Marshall and Chimney Rock is all toast...its gonna be a long recovery, it will take years.

Anyone trying to evacuate should remember to use the smaller roads that run parallel to I95.

Just remember that going through most towns has you making a turn at the main traffic light to continue through town.   Not all are straight through.

I drove on I-95 from West Palm Beach and the parking lot started at Jupiter inlet.    So......I went to Jupiter Donuts to contemplate and top up the car.
There, a "scrappy johnson" looking guy directing traffic in his gas station told me  "Those  morons on I-95 don't know jack..............US1 is wide open"
Both US1 and A1A were wide open with US1 having stretches of 65mph speed limits between towns.
I watched the parking lot on I-95 as I sailed past at 45mph average speed (including traffic lights).

I did the same thing with I-10 until I had to turn onto 85 north and then going 100mph on georgia 400 and getting passed because they just drive that fast.

Wind/fire (homeowners) premium is about 6k a year
Flood runs around 4k for us. However we are in a flood zone. I have a higher elevated home but being a rental, we pay the highest premium.

My broker shopped my flood insurance awhile back. While he was shopping it, we were hit by Harvey. Local official gage broke at 51.88 inches. We had a good bit more. Not far down the road they had just over 62 inches. My home is not in a flood zone but had a couple of inches in it. Insurance stood good and we came out fine.

I figured we would not be able to find a better deal after that but my broker said he was still shopping. He said it was not a problem. He actually found better coverage for less with a reputable insurance. You just never know.

We got lit the heck up on the back side of the eye. Luckily, I live maybe 1/2 mile from the substation with straight UG power, so no outage. Little known fact: margaritas defy the first law of thermodynamics and actually produce more energy than they consume. Therefore, Shuffler only needs to to fire up the marg machine once to get the ball rolling. After one or two of them, things just tend to light up on their own.

Gotta love science!

Thankfully our home is no different than how we left The surge never came to the home level. I didnt even have to clear debris in the yard.

What is concerning is the state issued a mandatory evac for everyone in our community and some that left are upset they left for "no reason" claiming they over hyped it.
I really hope this does not set the tone for the next one and folks dont heed the warnings. This one was very scary and there is still a month left in the season

Mine runs on propane. I have the numbers of 4 suppliers just in case. When I had the gen installed, I also had a 500 gallon tank installed. It supplies the gen and my pits on the back patio.

Might want to consider a solar backup.. 500 gallons of lp won't last long.

10 days or so. In that time I can generally get a fill from one of my suppliers. I have several neighbors with solar. In almost every case, they have failed to meet expectations.

Power coming back on late yesterday felt like we won the lottery!

Still hear generators running in adjacent neighborhoods..

power was out a total of 19hrs, only used 3 gallons of fuel in my generator
luckily the river didn't rise as much as it did during Ian, about a foot and half less, so zero water in the house this go around

We were away in England on vacation when Milton came through, arrived home on Sunday night to no power and no water. Compared to others around us we got lucky we lost our carport and gutters, a lot of people around us(we live in a retirement community) lost their homes. We got power and water back on Tuesday morning and are slowly getting things squared away.

Glad to hear it wasnt too bad for ya Xbrit. Still sucks about carport and gutters, but glad it wasn't worse.

Never lost power myself, I guess it pays to live 1/2 mile from a substation.

Never knew you were so close, we go over that way quite often.
