Title: How did I not know?
Post by: Leisure on September 30, 2024, 10:23:02 PM
Hello,

Wife is out of town and I noticed the monitor in her office is bigger than mine so I swiped it. My monitor is a 24" 1080p @ 60hz variety while hers is a 27" or so, 1440p @ 180hz. What a difference in AH3! It was like having cataracts removed and a fresh new prescription set of glasses installed on my face. Everything is shockingly clear and nice and any and all pixelation seems to be gone. Also, I may be wrong but my TrackIR seems much smoother too. I didn't want to tax my Nvidea 3080? vid card too much so I'm running at only 165hz but I don't think it'll struggle at 180hz as I didn't note any raise in temps or tearing while the frame rate was never below 165.

I must say I heartily recommend such an upgrade and I have begun the search for a 1440p monitor even bigger and better than this one just to one-up my wife.

Costco has a the MSI G274QPF 27" WQHD IPS Nvidia G-Sync Gaming Monitor for $159 online.

It typically goes for $239 I've seen them go for as low as $149 (Black friday/Cyber Monday) I have 4 of these monitors for my computers, they are pretty good.

https://www.msi.com/Monitor/G274QPF/Overview (https://www.msi.com/Monitor/G274QPF/Overview)

Just as a heads up this it the NON-QD (Quantum Dot) version. MSI has a version that is a slight step up that cost about $50-$100 more called the G274QPF-QD

Sometimes B&H has them for the same price.

Hello,

I went with the G274QPF-QD but from Amazon because I'm lazy and have $53 built up in Prime credits. So about $165 all told. Thanks for the suggestions!

Hello

No more monitors but an unopened can of Blue Diamond smoked almonds! I'll replace those by Thursday.

A 3080 should be able to handle AH3 in 4K. Monitors are cheap these days.

And I prefer the format of that Dell monitor more than the ultra wide screens. You get more vertical fov with 16:9.

What happens with the wide screens at 21:9 or 32:9 is that you get a wider fov at the expense of a short vertical. In ACM you are going to be spending more time looking up than left or right. I tried turn 3 monitors on their side to get a greater vertical fov. Wasn't practical.

edit:

Having now seen his new purchase, it's pretty damn nice. I have a newish MacBook (2560x1600) with me and the new monitor is pretty similar at a reasonable viewing distance. It also cuts glare better than this laptop despite not having a matte finish. And a definite  improvement over 1080p in crispness and color depth even just reading text here at this site. I have a feeling most people know all of this and we just now are discovering this "wheel" that people have been going on and on about for thousands of years.

Plus, the bevels on the monitors would make it seem you are in jail looking out towards freedom.

What about newer sims flight sims and other newer games? I have a Nvidia 3070 over here. I'd like to one-up Leisure but not at the cost of burning up my gpu. The price on that Dell seems stupendous but as you said, the wide aspect doesn't appeal to me.

True for triple and five monitor systems. But on an ultra-wide screen of 21:9 or 32:9 there's no bevels other than the ones framing the monstrosity.

I have a 3070 with 3 monitors connected. My primary is a Dell at 2560 x 1440.  The most demanding I've run is DCS and it runs fine on my machine at high detail settings. CPU is also a factor and I run an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, 64GB Ram, and a fast SSD.

That Dell I linked is not wide aspect. It is 16:9 like mine.

All 3 monitors are the 2K (1440p) variety? If so, that's intriguing as that screen space would be nice. I'd imagine the 4K (3840x2160) monitor in your link would be less taxing on the GPU than running the 3 monitors or do I have that wrong? Is the primary one in the pic a 32"?

That's a nice setup.

The two on the sides are cheap 27" Samsung monitors at 1920x1080. The middle is a 32" Dell at 2560x1440. Think I paid maybe $150 each for the Samsung a year and a half ago and $250 for the Dell same time.

Thanks.

As I mentioned I run DCS on pretty high settings and can get consistent 150-200 FPS in DCS on the Dell monitor. The rate does drop when there is a lot of action.

Replaced my Warthog throttle recently with the most basic Virpil throttle. Had to make me a switch box to go with it.

Thanks, that's good info to have as you have the same vid card and a similar CPU, 64gig RAM and SSD(PCle) specs. Well....CPU is 13th gen I7

Is there a frame rate counter in AH3? This is what I get in DCS. I expect you can do better in AH3 even at 4K res.

I should mention that of course there is a performance hit when you are recording video and audio so my frame rate is a bit better when I'm not doing that.

Hello

There is, Control+I. With mine, the frame rate stays drilled at whatever refresh I set my monitor to. I have it at 180 so frames never dip below that.

I assume you're using vsync? That limits your frame rate to your monitor refresh rate. Turn it off and see how high it goes.

heh, yeah. Turned it off and saw it mostly stay in the 280's. Saw a low of 246 or there abouts. Saw my GPU hit 60 deg C and CPU hit 65 however. I know that's ok on the CPU but don't know what the limits are on the GPU. Didn't see any anomalies visual-wise. Only did it for about 15 minutes-long enough for LATINLUV and YUCCA to drub me and kick my carcass off to the side a few times.

60 and 65 degrees centigrade are OK when stressed.

Also, having V-sync on reduces power consumption and thus keeps the GPU cooler if the refresh rate of the monitor is lower than what the GPU is capable to draw. Having some overhead resources is a good thing but if you're concerned with your energy bill you may even want to underclock the GPU and lower the max refresh rate of the monitor! There's most likely no visual difference in 144 or 165 Hz compared to 180 and dropping the clock rates by some 5% should still give you plenty of headroom. Studies tell that underclocking by 5-10% can reduce power consumption by 20-30% so we're not talking about peanuts here. And it will keep your system cooler which adds to longevity.

Hello,

I just wanted to see how it would do uncorked. As you suggest, I'm going to keep things sensible at 120hz to preserve CPU and GPU. I don't think I can differentiate anything above 120hz anyways but it seems TrackIR is much smoother compared to the 60hz of my old monitor. I've also tried HDR on and in the off position and it seems nicer with it on, so I'll keep it that way. These settings also look perfectly good in the IL-2 module I have, Battle of Normandy.
I am still astonished at the difference between 1080p and 1440p, it's vast to me. Just the difference looking at non-gaming stuff is worth the upgrade.

I generally limit my frame rate with g-sync but for performance tests to see where bottlenecks are it's off. 2560x1440 is good for me but if I were always running less demanding apps I'd consider 4K.

I'm in the same boat, 1440p is plenty good for me. 4k would also be nice. But: It wouldn't fit on my desk! In my opinion (and it's just mine) if you can't see individual pixels or rather the pixel grid with your reading glasses the resolution is tight enough and this 32" screen requires a magnifying glass for me to see the grid. Or having two pairs of reading glasses on top of each other, +1.5 and +1.0 combined show a faint hint of the grid. Thus 4k wouldn't make much difference in this size, I should go up to some 40" to get the most of the better image quality. Less would be pearls to pigs.

More pixels in the same space may make objects smaller but not necessarily. It depends on the app.

They do.

DCS players had complained that at high resolutions distant planes, just dots, were smaller than for lower resolutions. That was true until they changed it. The reason is that a distant dot was defined as only a few pixels rather than size. Since lower resolutions have bigger pixels it made distant objects larger. They did change this behavior so that a distant object occupies the same amount of monitor space for high res as it does low.

AH still shows the difference..

Prettier but smaller..at least the icon text size can be adjusted
