In RL, I miss my autofocus ability for viewing back and forth scanning. Also, the detail focus for small letters and numbers makes reading and typing very difficult. I had cataract surgery 4 and half years ago plus diabetic retinopathy which keeps everything out of focus for detail. Switching from monitor and keyboard was too much.
Main Arenas
Late War had two (Blue and Orange). We had fun with trying to get into Blue during peak times. Orange was always available for the interim. They were smaller maps creating a lot of frontline action along all fronts. Organized missions were always being unleashed. SPIES!!!!!!!! So many squads and squad nights across the week and the country loyalty. Lancastuka missions to kill all 3 VHs on the main pad for the original vehicle base configuration.
Titanic Tuesday to allow both Blue and Orange arenas onto a large map. Everyone got to play together. The purple dinosaur would be proud.
Mid War arena (Purple) was great for small fights on small maps. SMPizza was the best. Base capturing was the best for single player attempts.
Warly War arena (Green) was perfect for getting your name in lights at the end of each tour. 2AM playing was where you found those working on those goals.
Friday Squad Operations
The player count was at 600 pilots for quite a while. 2 dozen plus registered squads creating a mix of gameplay never knowing how the night would go. The big 4 of registered squads with 25 pilots on average were the 68th, Freebirds, the VF-17, and Arabian Knights (if memory still works). Several dedicated Axis squads with 15 pilots on average. Many small squads who got to fly with the bigger squads like mother birds.
Country text was full of banter. Local VOX was the same. Critical information sometimes got missed.
Commander in Chief (CIC) duty was several hours of un creating the weekly Orders. 4 Objectives to Attack and Defend plus aircraft mins and maxes made the fun a challenge. I adopted a Spread the Wealth and Minimize the Pain the best and fairly that I could. Strategies and Tactics became more difficult when the CICs began to know each other's tendencies and had to counter each other.
You would find the Admin CM, Setup CM and Bouncer on Rook country sitting the Frame out. Sometimes, the Allied and Axis CICs were in the towers coordinating the Frame and not flying. Frantic times required some sacrifice.
Scenarios
3 hour events lasting 4 Saturdays with 300 players. 2 or 3 life events making a comprehensive setup. The private Allied and Axis forums were rich with historical information and units. This was the only event were players from different MA and FSO squads could fly together.
Please share your memories of yesteryear.

Come join us in Battle of Britain 2025 scenario, starting in March. :aok
I think current scenarios are actually more fun now because they have more action and more balance.
There were only two scenarios that ever got near 300 players:
(https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXeAKSObRnvRhQCanKBHCUjxjQPqbZz_Qdhjpa_WDiy3tEepbf9QkrxM_KkIqHK_xzoZ3h0JuDNTu4_mXtRHr_bxaVNdJSu763hFiFYzI2veKIu5dZ5l3tWKaNp4mXCFtR6VYP8x?key=DJ6DHBozyXcGSBMIH3jNA1rT)
Scenarios from about 2015 and earlier were generally 2 lives (sometimes only 1 mission for bombers). Current scenarios are generally 3 lives and 3 Missions (or more) for everyone including bombers.
The action is higher because active area of the fighting is a lot more focused than before. Here is comparison of some past scenarios. Current ones are about 6-ish sectors of battle area (like Dnieper).

"What I Miss From AH Many Years Ago?"
My youth! And the company of equally innocently eager squaddies filling a H2H arena most evenings. Some months later the same bunch gathered on the Main Arena, cursing the Brits whose banks flooded the Transatlantic line for sending their daily transactions the same time we started to gather online. I could easily play until 11PM and wake up at 6 without being tired, now I go to bed at 9:30 and wake up at 8...

All I got to say, is I miss this game so much. It's a shame that it died. My squad mates and I went to World of Tanks when the game was still popular. I met some great friends there, some that I still talk to 15 years later. I wish the devs would just make it free to play so it could bring back more players. I miss having to wait to get a spot in the servers. Maybe one day...

I miss the people. My friends and even the enemies. Having so much fun on vox with friends. I miss teh times before spliting up the main arena. I miss the "new" feeling of playing and learning about the game. I miss the times when HiTech was really invlioved and flew in the game.
Basically just miss the good ol' days Fun times that we can never get back.... because, as they say, you can't go home. Home being a place in time.

Numbers are fine most nights.
If only the maps were sized for the current numbers..
Or imagine if it were only two sides instead of 3..

This is the way.
We reduced the battle area in scenarios, and the action today is actually better than the old days even though we have fewer people.
Air Warrior maps were (in terms of AH sector size) 2x2 sectors.

Ah, the memories. Upping from BigRod or Fencer to kill rascals upping from Blue Baron or Kelton. I get the same nervousness/giddiness here but I do wish everything was squished together more.

Peaked at 127 tonight....stayed steady at about 120 for a while. Some good large fights.
-
I hope you guys mention scenarios from time to time in the melee arena.
Most players do not visit the message board.

It's not dead..
I don't know the name of the map but yesterday I found action hour after hour on the map defending from bombers, fighters, in a kill steak that ended up around 50 (I never once landed an aircraft serviceable to rearm) and, fun I'd not come across for 10 years. They fought hard for the bases and I fought hard to defend them, it really was the good ol'days today.
That map size was perfect for high levels of game-play and experimentation in that game-play; several times I got the Me262 I was flying under 200mph flaps out turning with something.
One thing is for certain, if you don't play and be apart of the fight bringing high quality game-play with you, you'll never see the day of;
LWOrange 302/300
LWBlue 64/300.
:lol

There are enough numbers in the evening (8pm est and later) to find a decent fight, you just have to be willing to switch country to find it..
With these numbers, 2 sides instead of 3 would be awesome imo

30+ flight (90+ plane) main arena escorted B17 missions. Great high alt firefights happened in the old Main. The old dot dar added to the suspense.
