I was stationed in Germany 68-69 we were fed c-rations in stew like mixture everything was dumped in a large pot. We were only to get this once a week, but the cook was selling our food and milk, and we get the stew twice a week. Once I figured the schedule out, I became a connoisseur of fine AF mess halls.

Questionnaire:

What would you do if you found a scorpion in your tent?

Army: I'd step on it.

Marine: I'd step on it and then eat it.

Air Force: I'd call the hotel desk and ask why there's a tent in my room.

The one good thing about the Space Force is, over time it, it will replace Air Force as the butt of every joke.

Sorry about the link
What kind of leadership do we have that doesn't properly see their men feed and housed. This is Army wide
So much for an Army moves on its stomach!

Reminds me of:

A sailor and a marine are both taking a leak in the head.
The marine gets done first and goes to the sink and begins to wash his hands.
The sailor gets done and heads straight for the door.
The marine says to him "in the corps they teach us to wash our hands after we use the head"
The sailor responds with "in the navy they teach us not to piss on our hands"

Having difficulty getting my head around this.  Some of the best (and most plentiful) chow I ever had was in Iraq & Afghanistan... even at FOBs.  In my 2 decades active, I never once heard of BAS being "deducted", as it's an allowance.  You don't get it unless you need it and the DoD says you don't need it if you are in the dorms/barracks and use the chow-hall.  Same thing with BAQ (quarters allowance).  In Dorms or Live in base housing (for free) = no BAQ.  (and ya, I knew of plenty of marriages-of-convenience where the goal was each getting BAQ).  But... these allowances (or not) happened at DFAS (Defense Finance & Accounting), not locally.

Anyone been active fairly recently?  Did they start handing out BAS to everyone?

I'm on a few Veteran pages on FB. One of the recurring themes is the poor quality of chow in the DFACs. It's primarily Army but I have also eaten at the DFAC at DMAFB when we wintered there and saw some questionable quality in that place too.

IMO the largest reason that the chow halls can get away with lousy food (under / over cooked / contaminated) is due to the lack of senior NCO's and Officers eating there. If the Mess Sgt / Ofc knew that on any given day or meal they might have several field grades and E8's / E9's eating there, they would straighten the hell up damn fast. If I were the installation, Brigade, Division CO I would make it a mandatory OER bullet point that the Officers I rated or senior rated ate a minimum of 3 meals a week and not the same meals when in garrison. I'd also be eating there and if there was a problem with the food I'd be exercising my chain of command to rectify the situation. I see this as a poor leadership situation.

Unfortunately a lot of the DFACs in CONUS are civilian run. Also IMO that needs to change.
