Title: Looking to upgrade sorta.
Post by: The Fugitive on March 26, 2025, 08:40:56 AM
OK, heres my story, I have ...

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.5GHz
Memory: 24576MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti

3 HD, 2x 500G, 1 150G

I havent done a clean install for years (if it aint broke dont fix it), but with WIN10 coming to an end I figured I might as well do it before it runs out so I can keep WIN10 a bit longer (should I bother or just switch to WIN11 now?). I figured while I was in there Id add an SSD drive. Turns out my MB is far too old for that(13+ years), so I need a new MB.

So at this point Im looking at a new motherboard Recommendations? An SSD Recommendations?

Should I keep the old CPU or will it 1, not fit in a new MB and 2, become a bottleneck?

My video card is good and plays well with my Quest2

I have a Creative SB X-Fi sound card. Do the new MB have better onboard sound than an old SB card?

I am sooooo out of the loop!

Any help ya'll can post would be great. The research begins today!

Thanks

My last upgrade was about 2 years ago so I can't offer advice on upgrade specs...but be aware that some MB's are not WiFi equipped.

I’m happy with Win11. Tweaking seems easier.

Getting a Win11 compliant rig would in my books be recommendable. If you don't need brand new anything past 2018 would do.

The numbers on your current system look good, getting the same values of newer ones should be plenty enough. For SSD disks comparing their speeds is a waste of time. In most situation you can't tell the difference of lightning speed to sick fast. Reliability is more important. An m.2 NVMe disk takes less space than a SATA connected disk (which you should be able to connect to your current system as well) and doesn't use cables all of which improves airflow.

Onboard sound v.s. an internal sound card may not make much difference as both suffer more or less from the EMI inside the case. And of course there's variables starting from three jacks to six, with or without an optical outlet and possibly a metal housing to reduce the interference.

Well after spending a couple hours looking at MB that support both NVME .20 and my 1155LGA socket cpu I have come to the conclusion that I need to buy a MB, CPU, and SSD. Its starting to add up fast. I guess I cant complain, first major update in 10 years.

My MB doesnt support either, and from what Im finding most MB with the 1155LGA socket dont either.

Huh? I've been in the belief that a SATA SSD would work on any Mobo that has SATA ports. But I may be wrong in that.

My Gaming system/HEWS is an AMD R9 5900x Cpu RTX 3080 system is my systems bottleneck in DCS I'm CPU locked/limited. One reason why I'm upgrading to a 9950x3d. AH maxed in VR, DCS HiRes on Flat Screen and Ok in VR.

My Workstation (older system, Getting replaced by existing as I upgrade to x870e) has a Xeon E3 1231 V3 CPU basically a Core I-7 4770 - Apu + ECC  32gb and a GTX1080Ti - AH runs well even in VR, DCS is OK on Flat Screen and slugish (Slideshow) in VR.

Micr$not is killing winblows 10 in October, You are going to need a 2018 CPU (Intel 8th Gen or Newer) to install winblows 11.

I would recommend Keeping the GPU and Consider replacing the 3rd gen CPU which is going to require new Memory and a Motherboard. I would consider turning your old CPU, Mother Board into a file server/Nas or some other network project.

Another option is Linux Mint. I've had many windoze users start using it from day 1. Linux has come a long way in user friendliness, and you can run a good deal of windoze programs and games on Linux. Steam OS is based on Linux too if you wanted to go that route.

About the upgrades. I would look very closely at signal core performance as I upgraded a computer from a 12100 to a 12700 and there was hardly any difference in games that run that are single threaded for the most part. (that's most of the games I play) So I returned it. This may not be the same for your configuration, however I think that some people think 16 cores vs 4 cores means more than twice as fast but the game has to be able to use all those cores and my experience most aren't. Just something to consider.

What Hazmat Wrote, Mint is a really good Ubuntu Debian Fork and my favorite flavor of Penguin.

Another Idea would be Steam OS (Debian Based Linux).

Another thing to think about is game streaming on steam. Basically you are remotely playing your game on your gaming rig from another (Usually less powerful System)

I would suggest looking around for mb/cpu/ram combos on /r/hardwareswap. Can usually pick up some great gently used stuff on there and you don't really need to worry about part compatibility.

As an example:
https://www.reddit.com/r/hardwareswap/comments/1jhokw2/usatxh_ryzen_7_5700x3d_msi_mag_b550_plus_32_gb/

Obviously the 3rd gen i7 is not comparable, but for giggles:

The more I look into this stuff and try to get back up to speed (been out of it for almost 10 years  ) Im thinking I should buy a built box with onboard graphics. Then I can drop the 4060 Ti into it and be ok for a few years again. Im not sure I want to do a build myself. Last couple I did I had issues with and the older I get the grumpyer I get and Id really hate to throw the new rig through a window before I get it running  :D

I'll keep digging, thanks for the tips, and keep them coming as I try to narrow my search.

My last box specs are in my signature...I have been happy with its performance and lack of issues

Building it is the best part..this last one was my first water cooled cpu and having RGB colors on the video card, fans , cooler and ram..so you need a glass case  :aok

Good luck with it

I would definitely do the MB and Processor. Even without the fastest processor, you will notice a vast performance jump. The throughput between the processor and other peripherals would be much greater on a new board. Your graphics card would even show and improvement. This route would also require new ram.

Know the requirements for the aRGB and the RGB fans and other lighting.

Is that setup supported by Win 11?  For example, does it support secure boot and have TPM or, if not, a TPM header?

Yes indeed a MB and CPU is the way to go Fugi.  Beware on intel if you are going to over clock.  Make sure you update your MB bios before attempting to OC.  Intel overestimated the chips ability to handle increased voltage.  MB makers included increasing voltage in original bios.  Lots of intels cpu bit the dirt when OC.  New bios for MB lower the OC voltage.

Number of cores.  Not sure about AH but it's age suggest limited use of multiple cores.  However many modern games do use multiple cores.

OK, Im doing a full rebuild. The only thing coming over from my old box is the video card and one or two sata HDs. Heres what I have...

AMD Ryzen 5 7600 3.8 GHz 6 core CPU

Asus PRIME B650-plus WIFI ATX AM5 mother board

Corsair Vengeance 32 GB DDR5-6000 ram

Acer Predator GM7000 1TB M.2-2280  solid state drive

Darkrock Classico case

Win11 64bit

Got it for $600 and should all be here by this weekend. Of course I have been working on consolidating my drives, making lists of which programs I "need" and which I "want" and which I dont have to bother with. Getting all passwords and licenses together and so on. Man I hate this!!!!   :D

All of that also means I have had to put my videos on hold. I hope it all goes smoothly and Im up and running on the new box soon.

Thanks for the help/tips !

WOW.
You're along those "if it ain't broke don't fix it!... You have right now a kick arse box with what I don't see anywhere there that you really need to improve. YOU HAVE A KILL ER core with a bunch of RAM, and OMG, LOL, I would DIE to make this box I have right here closer to the one you have!

You know already the obvious answer to not scimping on your CPU. I did and that is the bottle neck of mine and anyone else's computer a kick arse one!

Long time no C! morph

Joe, I'm basically going in the same direction.

I went with the Ryzen 5 7600x,

Thermalright Burst Assassin 120 EVO DARK cooler,

MSI B650m wifi Mortar mobo,

Silicon Power ddr5-6000, 32 GB ram,

TeamGroup MP33 1TB M.2 drive

I'm going to put in my Phantek Eclipse P300A Mesh, EVGA 750 GT psu, and PowerColor 7900 GRE, from my current system.

Well its up and running. It went pretty smoothly. I have a few minor issues with my home network and outdated hardware. It sucks that you take care of your stuff and it becomes obsolete!

HP lazerjet printer no longer supported by HP nor win11.
Intous4 drawing pad, no longer supported by wacom nor win11.
Owned Photoshop CS5, no longer supported by Adobe, wont recognize the serial number of the software, or my logins.

Ive foud a couple of work arounds and got the printer working on my computer, but not through the network. The same with the drawing pad. Next up is the video making stuff....<crossing Fingers>

I am happy other wise. Loads in the blink of an eye on boot up as well as starting programs. Click the icon and its running.

Pretty much the same power im running at with a 5800x and a 2080ti. Havent found a reason to upgrade yet, holds up very well in 2k or VR for anything I have tried. Hoping to get another year or two out of it. Best 2021 Jan purchases ive ever made, got it all back then and put it together for about 850 with used parts and a Rog Hero Viii

This build cost me just over $600, but I did use my video card from the old box. The old box lasted over 13 years with only adding some ram and a new video card, so Im ok with that.

I love building new machines. I don't often build new ones for myself, but I do for or with friends from time to time. Will be building three new machines for the shop pretty soon. They will be rather mundane as they will be more for data entry. Nothing heavy at all.

I miss those long gone cheap Fry's combo sales. Seems I read there was a scandal over those with the company losing money on them. Had to return a lot of stuff but there was never a problem with them refunding bad stuff. I see ECS Elitegroup is still in business.

My build has been up for a little more than a week. Runs AH with no issues. I did have some concerning cpu temps when I was running DCS. It hit 95c on the package, and I freaked.

Undervolted the cpu, and was able to increase the boost clock to 5.5 GHz while maintaining 80c ish on the cpu.

I ended up spending just around $600, for:

AMD Ryzen 5 7600X

MSI MAG B650M Mortar WiFi mobo

TEAMGROUP MP33 1TB SLC Cache 3D NAND TLC NVMe 1.3 PCIe Gen3x4 M.2 2280 drive

G.SKILL Ripjaws S5 Series (Intel XMP 3.0) DDR5 RAM 32GB

Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 cooler

I used my existing case, gpu, and psu.

I'm able to maintain 165 fps in both AH and DCS on a 34" 1440 monitor under most circumstances.

I'm very happy with the build.  :x

Nice!  I find the load times of programs amazing. Going to add all my video editing software tomorrow. Some of the render times were pretty long, cant wait to see it now.  :x
