Title: Video - HDMI vs Display Port Connection>?
Post by: Animl-AW on March 27, 2025, 04:04:40 PM
I guess I could call someone at work,... but frankly, not interested in returning in any form.

I'm not fully well versed on this subject in the difference between HDMI and Display Port.

I do know that my refresh rate went from 144hz to 165hz, but then on my monitor I seemed to have lost the option of HDR. My GUESS is that automotive in Display Port connection? Or does it throttle back HD resolution from HDR to get that 165hz?
First time using Display Port connection,.. so kinda ignorant.

Anyone know whats going on with that signal? Anyone notice any different visually?

As you've noticed DP is faster. I've heard the same from others. As most of my customers don't need speed past 30 fps I haven't studied the subject much so I googled for something that would be lo-tech enough for me to understand and this is what popped up: https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/tech-takes/displayport-vs-hdmi (https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/tech-takes/displayport-vs-hdmi)

Another thing that matters is the cable you're using. HDR requires DP 1.4 as is explained in https://www.cablematters.com/Blog/DisplayPort/displayport-1-4-vs-1-2 (https://www.cablematters.com/Blog/DisplayPort/displayport-1-4-vs-1-2)

I’ll have to check, not sure mine is 1.4. But if I get HDR through HDMI, Just a touch slower might be better off. Even at HDMI i’m 144hz and 250+ fps. Geared down to 120 with HDR.

I've heard DP is faster too. The only monitor I owned that had a Display Port froze in the garage and ruined the screen. Sigh! It's an attached garage. I just didn't even think it would get that cold. It even had insulation (except for the garage door).

A new monitor is on the list. I'm hoping for a 32inch 2k in the near future.
