Title: Linux and AH3
Post by: KrisKros on April 14, 2025, 02:40:08 PM
We've all got to either upgrade to Windows 11 by Oct 2025.

Question: Is anybody running AH3 using Linux and WINE (or VirtualBox) These are Windows Emulators for Linux.

I know I do nearly everything else with Linux...Microsoft Word, Excel, web browsers...it's all just like Windows. Just wondering about AH3.

Thanks,
Kris

I am running AH3 on a Compaq suitcase....
Now where did I put my frozen margarita... and did I put a shot on top...
Oh well, I'll just put another shot on top to make sure I am covered. Now where is my computer?

Dont have to upgrade anything.  Windows 10 wont stop working, it just wont be getting updates.

Many years ago I tried Wine on AH, it had artifacts, and graphic card driver problems (Nvidia)

I’m running aces high on windows 7 64bit.

I stayed with windows xp media center edition until aces high 3.

Using some IT mojo, I used the various install options and avoided acpi and made sure no hardware sharing of irqs went on.

It wont get security updates which means any new exploits that are discovered will not be patched for you.

Personally I would not risk that but with a good third party anti-virus it'll probably be safe enough for a while after MS drops the free support.

Anyone remember nuke/winnuke from the 90's? Knowing that millions will continue using Windows 10 beyond the support period I expect there will be more than a few less savory types looking to exploit this.

There are some versions of Linux that are gaming focused like SteamOS. I would have recommended that until they went to the rolling updates which sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

Or you could just lock down your Windows 10 computer and make sure there are no services for somebody to connect to. Back in the day I scanned one of my computers running windows and found a port open so I went into the firewall and locked it down. Suddenly I couldn't hear anybody on range or channel in AH. I opened the port again lolz.

Locking down your box won't stop you from inadvertently downloading some bad stuff so do be careful.

I never liked WMR but it's a shame MS dropped it with Windows 11 24H2. That renders the HP Reverb G2 useless. You can stay on Windows 10 20H2 or Windows 11 23H2 but the days of those are numbered.
