Hey all;
Looking for gunnery tips... I feel like I am fairly solid (or is that failry!?!) on the ACM part, but my gunnery is terrible. Sitting at a solid (haha) 1.64% at the moment, even though .50s are supposed to be laser-like). And everyone I'm fighting seems to be 5-12%. I can usually generate a good shot somewhere in most fights, but then I blow the shot, and my opponent takes advantage of my jug's somewhat less-than-stellar turn rate.
trog had a good one of mapping the firing button to a throttle button, so that the aim is not thrown off by jerking on the joystick when firing. I don't know if that will help but might try it. I think my issue goes back to that huge Air Warrior hit bubble, but you'd think I would have trained that out of my muscle memory by now. Shrug.
Any tips would be appreciated. My convergance is around 600, IIRC.

Pretty sure this isn't what you're looking for: My gunnery sux too so I pull my conv into 300 and do like Hartmann.
Even with my conv set a 300 it's only back to it's original gun spacing distance at 600 so I can hit bombers at that range.
-
Film your fights. Check the yards to target when you fire. That is what your convergence should be set to. I can check your films if you like and give better tips
-
Thanks, hazmatt! I was thinking of doing that. I used to set the convergence to around 275 - 300, but thought I needed a change. And taking Fugi's suggestion, I'm usually rolling around in the mud (and losing to an LA or Spitfire) and firing at ranges less than 200 all the time.
 :salute

So with a 200 convergence…..does it make landing hits at d900 impossible?
Does this cause longer shots to pass below your d900 target?
-
Come tonight to Monday Night Madness, they have aim assist enabled for us...it really helped me learn where to shoot.
As for convergence, if it is 50 cal and on the cowl...I take it all the way out. Less than 50 cal and on the wings...down to 300.
I can't express how beneficial MnM really is, you won't believe how far you have to lead some shots. It will help  :salute
-
My best shots usually come as a surprise to me as I didn't think the shot would hit...
Usually involves shooting way sooner than you'd think needed - more lead - and at a plane totally out of eyesight due to the planes maneuvering..

In my squad we had some training events in AH.
On the gunnery side one of the more important things was setting up the stick curve so over-corrections did not play a part of the deal.
The secondary thing, was to fly much in one plane type, and not jump around too much, you learn the quirks, handling at speed etc,
The 3rd set up the convergence that suit your flying style.
-
Another thing that seems to help is to unload the g. I pull in front of the enemy to a point that he is going to fly through and stop pulling. I hold down the trigger for about 2 seconds and if my timing is right he flies through. This seems to help a lot when the armament is not that heavy or if you have something with a slower rate of fire.
Although I know what I should be doing I usually I just get impatient and spray bullets all around them hoping they'll crash lolz. Jugs got ammo to spray and pray :)

That's the rub for me "Stick curve" is elusive. I've chased it for months.

Different from real a2a as the internet adds a delay that has to be compensated for usually with additional lead time..

I'm not sure how I see that being the case since your bullet trajectories and hit events are calculated locally.
That affects guessing when the enemy has lead enough to shoot you, but your lead is dependent on the target plane you see in your reality.
Am I wrong?
[Edit]
However I'm sure the techniques in that pamphlet are very broad rules of thumb simple enough to use in the heat of combat.

I always thought hits were client side. Surely they are in offline practice and that always seemed to mesh with online.

The best gunnery advice I ever got was to always fire in very short bursts to train your brain what the correct sight picture is. If you’re constantly blazing away full auto it’s hard to discern where you should actually be aiming. This has helped me a lot with crossing shots.
I still can’t hit a dead six shot to save my life though (possibly because I break my rule and start blazing away full auto in frustration)
-
Aim small, shoot small.

Lol same here on the dead 6 shots...God help us if they're stirring a pot as well :rofl  :salute

I shoot like Mr. Magoo. I’m ok with it.

It's called accuracy through volume.. that's why we fly jugs hly!!

Frozen Margaritas improve accuracy.

I see lots of good tips and points here. Hag, hobble, eagles just to mention a few. Try about 400 for convergence, I regularly hit at 800 to 1000 with that setting if a plane is hung or not moving much. Horble witnessed it on a 109k4 I got the other night. Unloading gs in a crossing shot is the biggest factor, let's consider this. If you can pull lead enough to hit the nmy your spraying bullets over a wide arc. However if you can back off on the gs fire to 1 point and the nmy plane flies through this your gonna get a kill with 8 50s and land nearly every round. I see lots of 50 flyers using the spray and pray method, you simply can't do that in cannon birds and get more than 1 kill. I like the burst and lead more than you think. I find I cut many tails off when in a turn fight. Slightly more lead would land an instant kill on the pilot. 50s are great for this! Lead more, 400 yards ( shoot at your convergence too) patience! Short burst , less gs . Hly you already dodge bullets in that jug like the matrix, these tips and practice implementing them will help.
I have found many times myself I'll be down to 100 20mm or less and start really focusing and holding till I have good clean kill shots and get 3 or 4 more kills.. where prior I might only have 1 or 2 on 250 plus rounds expended. FOMO is real too. Patience BigDawg!

First post was May 4th with daily responses up until May 8th, with yours being the last on May 9th... far from being a 'necro" post, and according to your logic, you brought it back to life on May 9th.

Hag?
Not seeing Hag(gerty) is this thread, nope, but might be a typo for you Haz (g).
Hag = Haggerty (also forum id, who plays as Skyline currently) = -Ninja250, -Spectre, -UBerHAGS, -FieroGT, -Haggerty, -Hellcat -Misawa, -Gloom -Nobunaga -Cobrakai, -Skyline.

You ain't seent nothing. I've seen post brought back from before 2002 :rofl any post within the last 2 months is pretty relevant here.

Here's some extra -
I know you like 50s with the P47 so here are some tips. Guys with good hit % do so because they have many bomber kills and bombers are great for Hit%. Bombers are also great for practicing and warming up your aim. Keeping your stick steady is the first key to good aim, slightly increase dampening on your elevator a touch. Shooting bombers greatly help for improving steadiness. Come down directly on top of them and light them up.
2. Use tracers and hold down the trigger longer in sprites. Tracers help guide your shots. You can see if you need to lead more or less and can adjust your aiming in real time knowing where they will hit better. Hold down the trigger for half a second longer. 50s don't work well in sprites and it's aggravating as hell. You have to bascially fill up their wing with 50s for it to fall off. Wing shots are what you really want, body shots aren't gonna get you the kill. Thats why having a steady hand, guiding your shots with tracers, and firing for half a second longer will help you get the kill. 50s are like combos have to hit consecutively in one pass to assure the kill. IMO, 50s make it much harder to shoot down planes because quick snap shots aren't as effective which means you have to chase longer to bring them down, ruining your E and SA in the process.
-
I can't get many kills with 50 cals.
My Mossie 20mm guns are set to 650. Pretty deadly........ I found that's what works for me.
Helps a lot with the quicker, more nimble planes twisting and turning infront of me

in offline practice arena or in the training arena, type in the text buffer .target and a number in. try 500 or 1000 or whatever. then fly or aim north. you will have a big target infront of you. shoot to your hearts content, or until you get good at it.
only works in offline mode or in the training arena. works for all guns as far as i know. good luck!
also come into monday night madness on monday nights. i have the targeting computer on for Air to Air combat. that might help you as well.

Wow, what a cool surprise feature. Thanks for pointing it out, Jaeger.
Does anyone have the instructions for turning on the targeting computer offline? Or is it a MnM only feature?
Thanks

iirc it can be enabled in the TA, as well. apparently it's enabled with the tab key.
Also check this out for the offline enabling... https://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,349719.msg4619776.html#msg4619776

Cool, thanks Shane. As you know, I could use this. Printed.

Thanks, all, for the good advice.. reading Violator's writeup next.
I did decrease my convergence and got lucky and blew up a Mustang and a C.205 on crossing shots at 200 or so. Pilot hits I'm sure. And as GOODBYE said, volume of ammo is a plus. :)
As always, this community rocks! :rock

We need more films from you, Hollywood. Been slackin'!
Even the ones where you are putterin' around on the electric scooter are good. Let's see 'em!
