Title: Yak 9T cannon vs P-39 cannon
Post by: caldera on June 03, 2025, 09:32:17 PM
The Yak cannon is like Bruce Willis in Unbreakable and the P-39 cannon is Mr. Glass.

This has been a long standing issue and maybe another reason the P-39 collects cobwebs in the hangar.

I have a whole bunch of damage list photos of the Yak with machine gun and oil hits, but zero with cannon damage.

Only have a few photos of the P-39 (will get more this tour), but all have cannon damage, with both MGs intact.  The complete opposite of the Yak.

Does this occur in the other Yaks, too?   :noid

I seem to remember when I was a big Yak9T user that the cannon alternated between AP and HE.  It also has 900 m/sec velocity compared to 600 m/sec of the P-39.

To clarify, I was referring to damage resistance, not ballistics.

In my experience the Yak 9T cannon cannot be damaged, while the P-39 cannon is very easily damaged.

The Yak NS-37 cannon is nestled in the Vee of the engine affording a lot more protection than the p39 cannon which is (out in the open) if not for the thin skin of the plane.

Seems accurate to me.

If that is the reason, then 109s never have cannon damage either?  I don't remember that being the case.

Just to show I'm not imagining things, here are 35 screenshots from 35 different sortiesAll with one magical happenstance:  damaged MG and intact cannon.

Now I remember mentioning this years ago before a long break, but nothing ever became of it.

Only the first sortie is recent.  All the others are from about six years ago, but if the bug was never addressed, should make no difference.
Only flew the 9T for a week and happened again, bringing back memories, so that one is first.

Is it all simply anecdotal or just coincidence?  You be the judge.

Pay attention to the damage list display in the upper left corner of every single shot.
