Title: McAfee has become a virus!
Post by: Morpheus on June 11, 2025, 11:07:19 PM
 :furious

This is such a fool-headed POS pile of trash program that just had to go AND die.... I'm done with that flame! I hate this, and now it's infiltrated my PC notifications, alerting me to a nonexistent virus that was never there anyway!

My question regarding this problem is quite simple and obvious... How in the world can I make this ENTIRE NAME AND WORLD be scrubbed off of my PC???

Thank you

I came across it as a virus in 2003. I thought it was well known.

I stopped using it when PCs started coming with a demo version pre-installed.

A lot of anti-virus apps have also become such bloated nonsense, your system takes a hit on performance. Norton is the worst I know of. I won’t use them. I will format the drive just to make sure they are gone.

I don’t suggest that, but the way I clean my PC I haven’t had a virus for well over 10 yrs, maybe 20 yrs.

Years ago I got a few hostage type screens, but if you use something like Ccleaner to clean on boot they are gone as they sit in browser cache. Also having Firefox clean on every closing it stops them from existing.

I won’t open emails I’m not expecting.

Can’t remember last time I used them.

That said, the way I have my drives set up and custom registry files, even if I have to format and reload Windows, I can do that in 45 min back to exact normal.

Again, I don’t suggest it, but that’s how I roll.

Might have to format and reinstall your OS and start over...

You should be able to remove it from the programs in your control panel. If you use Chrome check here also. chrome://extensions

Add/remove programs should do it, but there is a removal tool

To completely remove McAfee, use the McAfee Removal Tool (MCPR) first, which is designed to remove all traces of McAfee software from your computer. If that doesn't fully remove it, you can also try using a third-party uninstaller tool.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
1. Using the McAfee Removal Tool (MCPR):
Download the MCPR tool: Visit the McAfee website and search for "MCPR". Download the tool.
Run the MCPR tool: Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.
Follow the prompts: The tool will guide you through the uninstallation process, which may take up to 20 minutes.
Restart your computer: Once the tool is finished, restart your computer to ensure all traces are removed.
2. Using a Third-Party Uninstaller (If MCPR fails):
Download and install a third-party uninstaller: Consider options like Revo Uninstaller or IObit Uninstaller.
Run the uninstaller: Launch the uninstaller and locate McAfee in the list of installed programs.
Select "Uninstall" and follow prompts: The uninstaller will guide you through the removal process, including removing residual files and registry entries.
Restart your computer: Restart your computer after the uninstallation is complete.

If you don't dig deep, you may be left with something that calls home (polling) every so often causing latency spikes in your connection.

I would be cautious with IObit. I installed the free version and once installed I started getting annoying pop ups telling me that I was vulnerable  and to start using their VPN (I use Proton already) as well as incessant ad for a Fathers Day discount that repeatedly returned no many times I closed the window. It installed their VPN app as well as a Desktop Recorder package, both of which I didn't ask to be installed. They only way I got IObit and it's tools off of my machine was from a previous restore point. It was really cranky about uninstalling it's self.

Thanks guys. I've never installed this trash on any of my computers. Not once! Not Ever! It is one of those apps that you just can't trust, not just on your PC but even on the shelves! It seems like HIV! You get near that, get it on you, and it'll kill you in just a matter of time!

Thanks again!
