After all we've seen today, I have to say I'm quite suprised they didn't hit the Statue of Liberty.
They obviously chose to hit the WTC and the Pentagon as symbols of America's economic and military power.
So why not hit the ultimate symbol of America itself? The Statue of Liberty?
For those of you not familiar with New York City, Ellis Island and the Statue itself are very close to the World Trade Center and if you can hit one, you could easily have hit the other.
Plus strategically thinking, you had already expended one of your limited number of "weapons" on the WTC (its obvious that the hijackers could have seen from the cockpit of the second plane that the one tower had already been hit), why not divert to another target?
Today we have collectively taken a sucker punch in the guts. Thank god, we weren't kicked in the balls as well.
Terrorism will not Stand. Justice will be served. :mad:

The Statue of Liberty would have only hurt a few tourists and angered us. The World Trade Center gave them the chance to murder over 50,000 people.
They probably beleived it to be more newsworthy, not living in this country. They may not have wanted to piss off France either, as it was a gift from them.
I am surprised they did not take out the Sears Towers as well.

The targets chosin today were strategic, the statue of liberty has no value other than emotional.
IMHO, this is not over yet. A lot of planning has gone into this and i'm sure there are targets yet to be destroyed.

Speculation:
Bin Laden's target in 1993 was the WTC. He took a shot at it and failed to bring it down. I've read that the idea was to make one tower fall into the other one and knock it down. But it didn't work. So he just got a bigger hammer and went after it again. Plus a little revenge shot at the Pentagon who killed some of his people.

i hd an erie moment on the bus this morning. it loops past the golden gate bridge on it's route and as we passed it was all but deserted.
cops and news crews lined up thinking it would be the next big icon the get hit. near the tourist center i looked out the window and saw a caltrans worker lowering the flag and then raising it to 1/2 staff. a few international flights were still circling their way to land at sfo. it seemed like the whole u.s.s got knocked down and the whole world was vunerable. i'll never forget that feeling!

The twins are not only symbologic and peoples. I may get wrong, correct me otherwise but :
The Twins have some offices and HQs on major companies. Imagine if your companie HQ gets blown up... all your archives, projects, orders ... your employees...
Those companies will be shut down for several days, economical damage is priceless I think.

It is my belief that the plane that went down near Pitsburg was ment to hit a symbolic target in the Washington D.C. area Most proabably the Capital Building. That would make the Symbolism complete. Remember, the true symbol of capitalism is not the president, but the elected representives.

I believe the targets in this attack were deliberately picked to hit EVERYONE. The goal of terrorism isn't to scare people like the boogie man, it's goal is to send a message. They don't have conventional ways (ie, waging a war) of making their thoughts clear, so they take a baseball bat and swing at your knees to make themselves clear.
The US has become more of a financial power than an all-round world power. Most of the conflicts we choose to take part in are certainly for financial interests. Just like the Gulf War. We decided to help to stop tyranical takeover.. no, we decided to act because we needed to protect our oil assets.
funked nailed it. They hit our financial center as well as our pride. Sure they could have hit the Statue of Liberty, but it wouldn't have affected the maximum amount of Americans. The terrorists knew how to let us know they are there and they sure did. Now it is time we, as a nation, come together and strenghten our unity and our Pride. What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger. We can only grow from this tragedy.

thank god that 4th plane went down, i bet it was headed for the capitol. which would have been much worse than the pentagon.

WTC = financial nerve center for the materialistic "great satan". I am sure that is why it was targeted. They doubt the stock markets will be open tomorrow ...

also remember that the WTC are much easier targets to hit. same with the pentagon.

The man whom is the chief suspect as being the man behind today's terrorist attacks is Osama bin Laden. Here are a few of his threats against America. I would have to say that this man is definitely a prime candidate for the world's worst villains list. Here's a few quotes from him:
"We predict a black day for America."
"The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies -- civilians and military -- is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it, in order to liberate the al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy mosque [Mecca] from their grip, and in order for their armies to move out of all the lands of Islam, defeated and unable to threaten any Muslim. This is in accordance with the words of Almighty God, "and fight the pagans all together as they fight you all together," and "fight them until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in God."
"We do not differentiate between those dressed in military uniforms and civilians. They are all targets in this fatwa (a religious decree) ... we must use such punishment to keep your evil away from Moslems, Moslem women and children."
You know, the Bible said that there will always be an enmity between the the descendents of Ishmael (Moslem & Islamic) and Isaac (Jewish & Christian). It also says that this will one day lead to a huge war and the eventual end of the current reign of man's control of the governments of the Earth. My advice is to pray for guidance and wisdom, as we see what might become of this tragic series of events. Pray for our nations leaders and ask that they be open to guidance from above. As hard as it is to understand, we must remember the words of Jesus and try to forgive and turn the other cheek. It is mans nature to get even that will eventually lead to his demise. But it's all been laid down, eventually there will be a huge war in the Mid-East and after that the Lord will return. Already, people are screaming "This is war!". I say that violence met by violence is not a solution. We may be heading into the the end times folks.

I heard something somewhere that the pilot of the 4th plane which crashed in PA brought it down on purpose to keep them from ramming another building.
If it's true, he's one of many heros that will emerge from such a blackened mess.

4th plane was shot down by USAAF to prevent further damage... tgt was Camp David I believe - I surely don't want to be the pilot who was ordered to shoot at his own countrymen...

I guess this was the primary goal of this amazinhunks, to make you feel exposed.
We have growth believing a big army will solve any problem and defeat any menace, how sadly wrong we were. :(
Our big armies will serve the purpose of revenge, killing more people (in the most part as innocent as our deaths), and giving more volunteers for the next strike. :(

Just want to express my sincerest sympathy to all involved in yesterdays tragedy, and to the people of the US who must be un-imaginably traumatised by these horrific events. From what I know about the US and its people, I feel sure that you will put this behind you and be stronger as a consequence. All right thinking people stand behind you and the perpetrators of this evil will find that they cannot and will not be allowed to get away with this.

There was also some speculation of pilot intervention with the aircraft that hit the Pentagon, since the impact was the helipad area instead of the center courtyard. Guess only time and the black boxes will tell for sure.
Kirin where'd you hear that the USAF shot down the 4th bird in PA? I haven't heard that yet.

I'll bet when they review the flight recorder, the following might be found:
We know that 2 of the four planes they herded passengers to the rear of the aircraft. I'm guessing in that 4th flight, that some passengers held at knife point over powered the terrorists in the back of the plane, then charged the cabin door, once the terrorist pilot knew for certain that control would be taken away from him, he probably augered the plane.

That rumor has been dispelled by the US Gov't, Swoop. But we'll know more soon enough, they are currently examining the black box they recovered.

I just heard a senior military person say that the black box is the last thing on their on their mind, recovering survivors, bodies, and putting out flames is priority #1.

he's talking about the black box on the 4th plane. the black boxes of the first 3 planes will be looked for after all rescue attemps are concluded.

stock market MAY be open by Friday...very bad news guys..even when/if they open it don't look good for immediate trading...this could be the straw which spins us into a severe recession .. this would be the victory the a-hole terrorists were really shooting for...

Eagler, nothing we cannot overcome, not only as a nation, but as a world. 1929 was the true test...and since then there have been measures placed within the financial world to withstand that kind of market dump. Yep, financial sitution is gonna be bleak at best. We've done it before(withstood hard times), we will do it again. The Euro market was slightly up last I checked, with even a stable dollar..the Asian market was down, but a spike in the market is normal with times like these. Unprecedented, certainly.

Relatives of a passenger on the plane that crashed in rural Pennsylvania said he related during a phone call that men on board voted to try to overpower the three hijackers. Shortly after that call, the plane went down, as it appeared headed for Washington.

also about the "we shot the plane down" rumors... that started by reports of a man that locked himself in the restroom and used a cell phone to call 911 and report the hijacking..... apparently he was on the phone for quite a while, he then said "I just saw a puff of smoke of the wing", then right after that he said they were going down..... I'm not saying the call wasn't made, but how did he see all that from the restroom?
