Title: What happened to country music?
Post by: Banshee7 on August 10, 2025, 06:18:29 PM
98.73% of country radio sucks these days. There are a few artists staying true to the genre, but most of it is ultra processed crap.
Here’s one of my favorite tunes from IMHO one of the greatest country singers of all time.
Please flood this thread with your favorite country songs both new and old :salute

Everyone decided that singing about how either their wife left, their dog ran away, running out of beer, or their truck broke down wasnt bringing in the numbers anymore

The last 20 years of Nashville country has been all about party music. It’s been almost sickening.
Here’s one of my favorite Red Dirt artist’s take on the topic

This stuff is triggers for me. 1974, 14 yrs old, had my own horse on the farm and my first drum set. Lived and breath this stuff before the world broke me.

I KNOW I'm the odd freak about this... but I'm STILL pissed off they let that Kristofferson clown on stage with them (or anything else). Never could stand him, never will, and I don't care what he ever did. And not just because he can't carry a tune in a bucket. I always feel like I need a shower just from seeing his image. :bolt:

Wow! don't hold back, tell us how you really feel. I never had an opinion of him either way, other then he was obviously the least talented of the bunch. What made you such a hater?

I really don't know. Could be the image of him shirtless while pawing at Streisand... I mean the all around gag factor is real.

Cash may have felt the same. If you notice when came time for his part he waves chris away from his light
I always wondered where he came from. Glad he didn’t sing the whole song. Does he even have a hit?

Lucky for me I missed that one. Couple things of note. He was in films: A Star Is Born (1976, with Barbra Streisand) Guessing this is where you saw the thing that made you blind! lolz Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973) Convoy (1978) Blade trilogy (1998–2004)
He was a big fan of Johnny Cash.
He was an army ranger and helicopter pilot.
He wrote these songs: “Me and Bobby McGee” (made famous by Janis Joplin)
“Help Me Make It Through the Night”
“Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” (made famous by Johnny Cash)

I've never been a big Kristofferson fan either (or Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson :bolt: :bolt:), but I respect his songwriting (and the works of the others listed).

Well, IMO, many country artist made social discord subjects part of their show, cutting their audience by 50%, which made room for ridiculous.
I kinda view her as mocking, not seriously taking part. I worked with her when she was in Invogue, kinda just a snot nose “its all about me” girl., and she still lives it. I just don’t see what others see in her, Every dance act uses tracks, PERIOD. If an artist uses tracks they lost me. Yes, I had to process tracks in monitors, pssed me off every time. They can’t sing that stuff live, its just over-rated nonsense. Aguilera is an exception, not rule, and she is all botox now <shrug>

The title is right. Country went through changes same as in rock, but different. Mid to late 90s people who could not make it in pop or rock invaded the country wagon train, and kinda took it over, including rehearsed fake Nashville twang vocals, and cowboy hats as wardrobe, John Deer off stage. Then they added in politics and really scorched it. The music itself is pop, sometimes rock. More along the line of southern rock, but pop as hell.
I tend to like most prior to 98-ish. Its closer to what made country.
There is still good new country, I just happen to like authenticity.
Marshall Tucker Band was honest to call themselves Southern Rock, yet their true cowboy music sounds more country than the current. Today, many never even touched a horse or farm.

Get the "share video" link from youtube. Put "[ ]" around the word youtube at the beginning of the link and "/[ ]" at the word youtube at the end of the link and it will do it.

College educated city boys put in high places in the music industry, looking to make money instead of music is what killed country music. The same with Nascar and now the NFL is going to hell.

It has killed all music.
Think of this. We started out some caveman grabbing 2 rocks and beating them together in a rhythm. Another guy picks up 2 sticks and does the same,...another one starts beating a hollow log,.. and this grew into 100 piece symphonies. Since then we have down graded into small big band orchestras, then 4 piece bands,... and dipped below the radar with 1 guy playing looped samples of 3 keys of a keyboard, bass drum, hi-hat, and the most horrific vocals possible.
Any time a large corp privatizes an entire industry, you can safely go bet big in Las Vegas it will turn to expensive sht. Think about this,..... we can now stuff an entire 12k seat arena for a DJ,.... a DJ mind you.....<gags and vomits>
Live Nation also ruined the concert side....totally screwing the customer with extremely inflated ticket pricing for bogus packaged acts, and problems paying workers on time.

Males have been involved in cheerleading for ages. What's the issue? Unless you're a bigot.
No need to jump to conclusions! At a Penn State football game in the fall of 1970, I was surprised to see that one of my high school's tallhandsomegirlslovehim guys was on the cheerleading team. I contemplated that odd scene for a moment, and then realized that he necessarily would be spending a lot of time with the girl cheerleaders, possibly even in the locker room. I had never figured him for one of the smartest guys in the school, but that changed my mind.
- oldman (No, much as I tried after that, I couldn't make the cheerleading squad. Not tall enough, I suppose.)

Yes I'm a bigot.
It's a requirement to get a good seat at the clan meetings. If the Grand Wizard Dragon would give me a hood that fit correctly, and I could see out of, I wouldn't need to sit up front. So it's not my fault.

In honor of my grandfather that we buried today. The man that introduced me to George Jones...
And to get this thread back on track...
Sorry for your loss. RIP
Crank that wheel.
Short. Did a show with him. Both me and his road engineer got all our tools stolen by some stagehand at the venue. About $2k in adapters and utter stuffff, can’t imagine what he lost.

God Bless your Grandfather and George. He is on my stereo often. He'd cruise around Beaumont Texas in his station wagon with his phone number down both sides.

I dunno, hip-hop mannerisms while singing modern country doesn’t capture the immersion of what country is about. If one likes modern country where the music and vocal structure are all the same.
I cannot get into modern country at all. There is almost no originality or diversity from song to song, group to group. Its actually worse than 70s pop. IMO.
That said all music is personal preference.
What I sense here is more of jumping the band wagon than the actual desire to be country. Beyonce dd the same, she is as country as a skyscraper.
Why I highly despise Kidd Rock, all he is is a band wagon jumper. His actual talent is lacking IMO.He would do child music if it kept him relevant. Worked with hus shiws 3 times, not ine impressed me. But after 45 yrs I’m hard to impress. My ars just dhut diwn and go into blick out mode.
Todays country, IMO, has lost its originality/diversity compass. Like ild country and old rock, band to band, song to song, was an originality difference. Which made radio not boring.
If you like it thats what matters. Its not bad. Thanks for passing on what you like.

Autotune & quantization disqualify this noise as music, let alone country. And the layers just keep piling on from there.
The only thing that matters is if woman can dance to it. :old:
This song is actually performed with a band. He played it live on SNL one time I saw. I dont know if id classify it as "country country" but its kinda like how rock is being classified as metal in some cases. Call me guilty for actually liking this song but not a fan of the music video :rofl I think its more hip hop than country tho.

True
Its not a bad song, as far as modern pop country. The mixing of personas dis work, for me. I refuse modern pop country, so it naturally won’t move me, personally.
