I joined PHARO, who was flying a B17 in order to man his guns. He dropped ord, but shortly afterwards a P47 dived in on us. Despite my best efforts from the top gunner position which resulted in the P47 trailing black smoke, we were hit and had to bail. On the way down, on private channel, I said to Pharo something like ”Shit, that P47 came in so fast”, and I got the profanity pop-up box, warning me that profanity may result in loss of radio communication privileges
Am I alone in thinking this is a bit over the top? Did you know that according to cockpit voice recorders, the most commonly spoken last word before a fatal crash is ”Shit”? Even the KLM pilot in the Tenerife air disaster many years ago (573 dead) said ”Oh toejam” moments before the disaster, and English was probably not have been his first language. So, in our never ending quest for realism, we should be allowed to say “Shit” as we go down ;)
I know it can be annoying, even offensive to some to see certain expletives, but I thought that was why we have a .squelch command. After all, profanity is not the only crap (oops) we want to filter out. Now PLEASE don't come up with that old chestnut about profanity needing to be filtered because your 7 year old child might be at the screen playing, or watching you play. That is the most unoriginal argument against profanity I have ever heard.
I know that in the sanitised United States, such words are not allowed on TV. On European TV I have heard toejam, f*ck, and on channel 4 I’ve even heard cu*t. It doesn’t mean anything. I just hate being monitored by the AH profanity police, but that’s OK. For those words with a u in them, I can substitute a ü –hehe, wonder if this will be included in 1.09 profanity checks.
Now here’s something to amuse the Brits. I was in San Francisco one time, and watching TV on which the Michael Caine movie “Get Carter” was being screened. I had seen this before, and there was one passage that is full of f*ck and toejam… Suddenly Eric (played by Ian Hendry) turns to Carter (M Caine) and says ”Bollocks!” I was so surprised that they had left this in. And then I remembered that the word “bollocks” is (or was) meaningless in America – LOL – I was grinning about that all evening :D
Please vote in my poll. I will abide by the majority decision.

You lost a 1 fighter vs. buff fight AND bailed?
I vote you suck, and complain as effective.

There's a feature in this software that's local to your PC and filters out a selected list of curse words. The only policing being done was by your own CPU.

I don't think any real life pilot ever took the time to type "shit" while going down with his airplane. You wanna say toejam, great, have at it. Some people just don't wanna see you type it...what's the difference?

I never understood the American fear of 'bad' words.
A couple of nights back I watched an interview with Mark Hamill on TV.
Hamill: "...so I did it because I didn't want to pi... to tick George Lucas off."
TV Woman: "This is Dutch television"
Hamill: "Oh, ok. I didnt want to piss Geoge Lucas off."
I thought.... my god.... they are so scared of being jumped on when they say a 'wrong' word... land of the free.... yeah right.
-
Hey Keez, we can say anything we want on television but standard aired channels are reserved to a select few words because children typically have access to those channels.
South Park recently aired an episode in which they said "Shit" over a hundred times. They say bellybutton and squeak all of the time.
Oh, and comparing the Dutch TV to ours... hah! Atleast we have good TV shows!

Oh yeah well we get Jerry Springer too

There's a big difference between day television and evening television- well atleast here. We get the Simpsons, Seinfeld, King of the Hill, That 70's Show, Family Guy, etc- they all come on in the evening.
Those shows, like Jerry Springer, Oprah, whoever-that-fat-white-squeak-is, and other assorted crap shows, appeal to the unemployed wellfare sucking trash that have 8 kids running around crapping and peeing themselves. That's why the come on during the day, everyone else is at work (with exception to the guys doing the graveyard shift).

They show that in the evenings here... what does that tell about us :D
(they show the simpsons, king of the hill , seinfeld, stargate, and all the other good shows in the evening here too ;) )
How did we get on this topic? Oh yeah. Death to censorship! :)
-
BUT, the question is do you LIKE those(Jerry, Oprah, etc) shows? Or do you just laugh at how absurdly rediculously foolish the people that come on those shows are? Atleast with Jerry Springer it's comedy, those other talk shows..
We have a lot of parents who might have kids watching them play AH, and this is for fun- not exactly fun watching some maroon curse up a storm because he suxx0rs at flyte ga/\/\3z.
If you MUST curse into the comms box, start your own squad. You can curse until your fingers bleed... but you will probably only get the l33t d3\/\/dz with a limited vocab to fly with you. "You fuxx0r suxx0r d3\/\/d!" "N0 I d0n't, y0u fuxx0r!"
Crap like that, just not something I like to see after I shoot their tarded bellybutton outta the sky.

"I will abide by the majority decision."
Well, actually? You'll abide by whatever rules and behavior that HTC wants to allow or not. If you don't then I'm sure there is somewhere that will let you do and say just whatever it is you want to. Quite simple really when you think about it.

american censorship is very odd to say the least.
they allow horrible voilent acts to be whitnessed hourly on TV, actualy not only allow this but more like push it on you. Its what they use to sell there "news" station to you.
using "strong" words is very bad, you should not fully express your emotions.
Somehting as natural as sex/nudity is total taboo, it should not be seen on TV, not even at 2am when your "kiddies" are sleeping (which is who the christians want to hide it from).
now given that the majority of the people in this country are so easily controled and influenced buy media, what they are producing is phsycotic(sp) sex offenders. our country is full of sicks bastards like this.
as far as the profamity filter is concerned.. its typical. Would be nice with it off.

"american censorship is very odd to say the least."
But you're not being censored. For simply load up RW or AHVoice and give whoever it is you feel this dire need to communicate vulgarity and swears to an ear full. No one is stopping you from doing that. AND! On top of it that's more realistic too! For no pilot in WWII held up a carboard placard with the written words "SHIT! he shot me down!" as his burning plane plunged earthward.
Get over it.

Repeat after me:
"AH isnt a television show, its a privately owned game. AH isnt a television show, its a privately owned game. AH isnt a television show, its a privately owned game. AH isnt a television show, its a privately owned game. AH isnt a television show, its a privately owned game."
Now repeat this:
"Only small minds feel a game isn't complete unless they can swear in it. Only small minds feel a game isn't complete unless they can swear in it. Only small minds feel a game isn't complete unless they can swear in it. Only small minds feel a game isn't complete unless they can swear in it."
One more thing to repeat:
"My right to spend time typing swear words does not override others right not to be exposed to it and detract from their enjoyment of the game. My right to spend time typing swear words does not override others right not to be exposed to it and detract from their enjoyment of the game. My right to spend time typing swear words does not override others right not to be exposed to it and detract from their enjoyment of the game. My right to spend time typing swear words does not override others right not to be exposed to it and detract from their enjoyment of the game."
If you repeat these statements enough, maybe you will start to understand grasshopper. This subject has been beating to death on these boards. Its doubtful that not being able to swear has lost HTC many paying customers (if any left for this reason, good riddance), but if the text buffers were full of obscenities, I would bet many would leave.
Swear all you want out loud, scream it to your dog or annoy your wife or mother, we don't care, but you really dont need to annoy others playing AH with it. Many of us like to let our kids play, and too we show this game to our family and friends. We dont need to have swearing fools embarrass us.
The only sadder thing than guys who actually get on this board and whine because they cant swear is guys who pathetically need to swear so bad they will misspell swear words so they can do it. Really sad.

The filter does NOT affect private squad channels. We swear like sailors on ours - which is fine, because we are the only ones who hear it.

Interesting. I would refer you to a quote attributed to Cyrano De Bergerac "if ten thousand men marched through the streets of Paris, brandishing instruments of death, they would be cheered and showered with roses. But if ten men marched through the streets of Paris brandishing instruments of life, they would be arrested and thrown in the Bastille".
By the way. I note your profile says you're from Ohio. I didn't know English was a second language there.

Amons reply seemed so strange I would hardly know where to start a rebuttal.

Lets see, you call others sick but say it would be nice to have the profanity filter off? What would be nice about it? Having emotionally immature juvenile minded fools typing swear words on the text buffer of AH everytime they get shot down or feel like annoying others? That would be nice?
"land of the free, who ever told you that is your enemy"
Spoken like someone who has never left Ohio and traveled to another country. Like someone who has never seen nor experienced a government that really controls its population. Only the truely ignorant would make such a statement. In places that I have lived and also visited, like in the middle east and China, you quickly understand the differance between our freedom and the lack of it.
Shessh, comments like that amaze me.

10,000 men with instuments of death did march through Paris. They were called the Germans.
Thank god for the French Resistance!

I could be wrong, but I don't think there would be any crowds cheering a German occupation force. If they were seen in old newsreels, my guess would be that it was staged for propaganda purposes. *shrugs* I was'nt there, so I can't speculate.
Francophile...I like that!
But no, it's not me.

Dago's post about maturity was so fitting after seeing his "repeat after me" BS.. lol. you must be a holy religious nut because hypocricy is in your blood.
AH is not a TV show, great observation. It is media though. But im sure you already knew that.
Yea ive never left ohio, never left the farm i live on and ive never even left this compter im sitting at. Great observation yet again.
Also i understand that other cultures have different rules in there socieity's and some 3rd world countries have it worse than us, to bad so sad my heart is bleeding.
This reminds me of a scetch that sam kennison used to do about etheopia refering to all the starving people... "You know what this is? Sand.. You know what it will be in 1000 years? Sand.. YOU LIVE IN A diddlyING DESERT.. MOVE!!" ROFL:D
Censorship protects ignorant bellybutton people who are to stupid to change the channel, turn the radio station, not buy the alblum, or squelch the idiot who is using foul language, To self righteous to see others expressing there selves, or having a good time.
english is my second lanuage, enochian is my mother language, didnt think it was that obvious.
-
That's just it Am0n, you buy the album because you know what's on there. I buy CDs with vulgar words in every song. I am willingly buying it. See the connection here? When you get cable, you are willingly accepting anything and everything that you pay for. You can argue that you are paying for a service with HTC, but you are actually paying to play by their rules, on their time, on their equipment and with over 2 hundred other people who may or may not want to read some ignorant dipshit who's vocab consists of 1 or 2 syllable words they learned at 7-11 doing their weekly grocery shopping or at Wal-Mart shopping for their 10 kids and/or using welfare to get their unemployed tulips some essentially free clothes.
I can easily express myself using as many colorful descriptions as I want, but then in the end I only look like a dumb bellybutton redneck that can't read or write.
-SW
-
I noted that HTC does not have a minimum age requirement for flying the sim online.
So, my 5 year old is up quite often. I'd prefer the language filter on.
-
I think a better idea would be to have an installation setting in AH so that you can choose to have messages containing expletives automatically squelched. I don't find the occasional "diddly" or "shit" in the least offensive.
I hope AH does not become like the IRC #christian channel. I don't think it will. I find some people's opinions far more offensive than the F word or the C word.
-
Rip-
You got a 5 year old flying AH?!?!?!
*sigh*
Kid's probably got more kills than me, too.
I think I'll go cry now.....:(

Beet1e, there is a game you might find more to your liking, its called Quake.
Amon, answer the question we are all dieing to know:
Single or double wide? hahahahahah
Your handle already answers one question, mixing capital letters with non-caps in a name is virtually exclusive to teenage cyber-heros. Bet you wish you had my email so you could spam me too?
Yes, I am convinced you have never left the country, that statement you made about freedoms illustrates it.
The majority want the language filter in place. I am neither a religious fanatic nor a prude. I swear a fair amount myself, I just understand that there is a time and place for everything, and in this game, this aint it. We have kids playing, women playing, and people who dont swear at all and dont care to read it. Their right to not have profanity thrust upon them is far greater than your right to expose them to it.
Yes we have the squelch command, but I do not think I or anyone else needs to spend a large part of their time adding people to the list everytime we log on. Maybe if we had a permanent squelch list it would be differant.

thats not a bad idea on the on the filter choice Beetle, that would be great actualy.

You notice how I posted that on the UBB, and at the same time refrained from complaining about a.... profanity filter?
In the game I'm too busy dogfighting and having fun to want to take a break to type "shit!" or some other such nonsense when I get shot down.
BTW, ass- so long as not tangled with amazinhunk can be said over public airwaves.
Not exactly going out of my way to make sure my colorful metaphors are something extraordinary.
I never said I don't curse, I do all the time. I curse a lot more in real life than I did in those sentences. So, no, I don't feel like a hypocrite. Although it is redundant to begin to complain about a profanity filter just because you want to be able to say something profane on open comms to either a) get a reaction or b) complain about something.
What's the first word that comes out of your mouth when you are shot down? Me? It's usually mothafugga, followed by a string of more colorful metaphors. But, I keep it to myself or on squad comms. No one else wants to see it, and if anyone in my squad cares they wouldn't hesitate to tell me.

What is this strange power that the "F" word has, that we fear it so? What happens when children are exposed to profanity? Do they grow up to be criminals with a wide vocabulary?
-
Dern, this has less to do with children and more to do with entertainment. I am not entertained seeing how many different combinations of curse words I can come up with, and I will be even less entertained seeing someone else attempt to do it.
I don't care one way or the other, but many people out there do. Is it that damn impossible to understand? Some people just do not want to see it when they are trying to enjoy their game.

"What is this strange power that the "F" word has"
Fear? I think the word that better describes many folks reaction to swearing is 'disdain.'
For example, I've never heard anyone yell out while watching "Pearl Harbor" in the movie theatre 'Hey stupid prettythanghole jerk dweeb, that mutherplowing Nip with a dildo up his prettythang warped onto that P40 like a homoseeking missile and made him his butt raping gay squeak!"
You think people should have to listen to that ? Or should the person spouting off like that be permitted to? My answer is a resounding "No" to both questions. I don't want to nor expect to hear it online either. Unfortunately it's occuring more than ever online in the MA. In three flights in there over the past month I've seen everything I wrote in that example above and MORE.
It's vulgar, juevinile, classless and most of all unneeded.

Well said Westy!
I swear, but only around my own circle of friends, in privacy, I don't force it on others to listen to.
If you want to say "F%^#k you" online, just do it with class... "Finger" should be sufficient. :)

In my squad we use our squad channel and say whatever we please. On the private channel in countries, I can still read what someone is saying/typing. I guess AH can "hear" those things and wish to govern certain words. Hell, I have used cautious spelling of words so as not to get "yelled at" by AH and have gotten the warning anyway. Yet, I see "chit" over all country channels and it gets by. I guess I'm unclear about which words are taboo and which aren't.
-
two points...
the profanity filter is ok. Any child can get online and we need to respect their parents wishes.
America is full of contridictions and in general are an uptight bunch with regards to sexuality, profanity, etc.
Not all... but in general this is very true.
-
Words only have the power that you give to them.
The real pilots and crews of WWII were about to die. They could not reup in 20 seconds. I think that if they could most of these gentlemen would refrain from using profanity.
My father taught me, small men use four letter words to make themselves appear large before themselves. Before everyone else they are ignorant, and small.
Just my 2 cents
Blutik
BTW: AH is a private company and I don't think it has anything to do with American censorship, or has to abide by the censorship rules of the American Media.
-
The ironic part is that even though the profanity filter is there, people still use profanities on ch1 daily. They just say you fuggen nigga or eat shiz you g@y.. Everyone gets the message even though a couple letters have been changed. So in the end, the profanity filter only stops those who write it spontaniously without thinking they might be punished for it. The professinal profanity spewers just use ways to get around it.
As what comes to the censorship, I agree with above.. It's really weird to me to delete all profanities etc. from tv, radio, games etc..
That's not going to remove bad things from life nor will it protect your children, they'll learn it from other places with absolute certainty. In america it's allowed to show a womans bust as long as there is no trace of nipple visible.. Could someone wiser now explain to me what ON EARTH is so offensive in a womans nipple?? We were all sucking those during childhood. I'm still doing so every time I get the opportunity ;)
It seems so futile and crazy to see music videos for example with a guy showing the camera the finger - only that the finger has been censored away by digital blocks.. Or a woman dancing on her underwear, everything is fine untill she bends down to a raunchy position - enter the digital blocks again.. LOL. Everyone watching knows exactly what's behind those blocks. Everyone also knows there's nothing bad or immoral in seeing those things.. Still theyre censored. And I'm left dumbfounded.
-
So, Westy, what we are talking about is rudeness (profanity really isnt the issue here) . And the only way we can keep people from being rude is by coming up with a list of words people cant say? I read the definition of "disdain" and found that it didnt necessarily support your argument.
I think theres a lot more important things going on in our world to be worrying about which words people are using.
I swore (pun intended) I would never get mixed up in one of these.....but what the heck.
-
The important thing here is not what we as individuals believe is right or wrong, but what the majority wants. I said I would abide by the majority decision and I will. It's a matter of respect. Most people don't want to see some words, or variations on their spelling, so we should all refrain from using them. So be it.
-
Hey SCRMBL, forgot to say Welcome! Stick around for a month before you make a decision whether to stay or not, AH has a steeper learning curve than WB's does.

"... the only way we can keep people from being rude is by coming up with a list of words people cant say?"
Not us. Hell no. It's next to impossible to change rude people into nice neighbors. However this is HTC's business and what they allow or not to be used online is what counts. Not what you or I personally think is ok or not. We, the players from al over the world, would never reach a consensus anyway on what was allowable and what isn't.
Social behavior in a restaraunt or movie theatre is very much akin to what one would see in any online entertainment venue . If the management of any of those should allow loud, boisterous, insulting and uncouth behavior to be the norm then that place will end up attracting (and retaining) a predominately loud, boisterous, insulting and uncouth clientelle. People who want a more mature and adultlike atmosphere will find one or jump ship in a heart beat when one comes along.
