Arena Proposal ...
Ok, I was talkin' to Ghosth about some ideas for new Arenas. Really, I was squeaking to him about how quickly the terrains rotate and asking for him to help me persuade HT that we needed to change it. He suggested a really good idea, and I like it. Why not have 2 MAIN Arenas, with different terrains. This would take some pressure off the server for having to deal with 470 pilots and would people that enjoy ground vehicles a chance to actually use them. (Since GV's arent worht crap in Mindanao, and thats where we spend 75% of our time). HEY! Where'd the polls go!! :D

Hey everyone,
I assume most people are sick of the Mindanao arena too... I wish they would vary it with desert (Africa), Snow (Russia), some country or climate specific maps. I know it is not an easy task to make these or adapt them to the server, but it's food for thought. By the way, thanks HT for working on all those new planes!

DIE MINDANAO!!! DIE!!!!
( I like the idea) :)

I'll be submitting a new MA terrain for HTC approval soon, unbunch your chaps Larry. ;)

Hmmmmmmmmm...2 different maps!?
Does that AW sound familiar to anyone? It AW seems to me I have seen that AW somewhere before, but I just AW can't place it. I'm sureAW if I try really hard to rememberAW I will. Nope...nothing.
:D

Hmm....haven't I been suggesting exactly that for about 2 years now? Only responses I ever got were whines such as "it'd divide the community!"
Good luck Nimitz.

It would remind me of the worst time in my life of playing flight sims online.......Fighter Ace 2-2.XX. One thing I hated about how it was done in FA was that one room would reset due to a side overwhleming the rest (Usually the green virus GB) and then they would all rush into the other room. This room was usually dominated by a smaller more team oriented set of either SU, GE or even possibly JP/US players. Then the GB would shut that room down with a pretty fast reset because they would have 50-75 players in it against the 15-30 on the other countries. In essence you would have a split community and not one with rampant resets.
Introduce something else but eliminate that crapper called Mindanao.
New chant:
FLUSH MINDANAO! FLUSH MINDANAO! FLUSH MINDANAO!

i think the problem with 2 arena's is that you might have 250-300 players in one, and have maybe 40-50 in another. or you'll have the "strat potatos" (tm lazs) just workin on their scores without having any competition to stop them. i.e. buff's destroying stuff without guys tryin to stop them. or having guys just jabo the crap out of stuff for hours at a time and not have to worry about getting shot down.
the 2 arena thing is a good idea in theory...but i just dont think it will work

IMO, excelent idea, but you will see a lot of people jumping from one arena to another one looking for numbers advantage.
In the other hand, I dont find Mindanao as a hopeless terrain. Just add enemy GV spawn points at every sealevel base at than map will regain the interest. And, as a suggestion for every map, add much more places without trees. Actually there is almost no way to ditch unless at sea. And, IMO, ditching at sea should be scored as a bailout, the plane will be unrecoverable.

It is true that two MAs might lead advantage seeking... MA-1 would have all Bishes fighting against a small group of Knits and Rooks and MA-2 would have only Rooks and Knits fighting each other in equal terms ;)
Seriously, I believe it would be two different sides of a gangbang on both servers.

seperate arenas have never worked before. People go where the people are. We have two arenas right now with completely different setups. The CT is a joke with less and less people in it every day. Allmost 500 on in the main prime time and a dozen in the CT.. These ct guys are diehard "historical" guys and they are capable of sitting for hours waiting for the numbers to come up. I don't think we will see that kind of thing happening in two seperate arenas with nothing to offer but different terrain.
And... If the terrain was mindnoa or however you spell it 95% of the time it would be fine with me. At least till we get the paper CV's fixed.

Sorry, but you people don't know what you're talking about. Your concerns are understandable, but mistaken.
Separate arenas DO work; they worked for more than 10 years in AirWarrior. Just because AH hasn't used separate arenas yet (the poorly-implemented CT doesn't count), doesn't mean it can't work. Remember, there were flightsims around long before AH!
The key to making separate arenas work, is to cater their size to your nightly player base. In other words if you have roughly 400 people on per night, create two arenas limited to 250 people. At first some people will complain, but in whithin a month it balances out and you'll wonder how you ever got by before.
Also, a good idea is to give the alternate arenas slightly different "themes"--for example, AirWarrior used "European" and "Pacific" arenas with somewhat different planesets. Not only did this add variety to the game, but it also made Japanese and USN aircraft more useful since they didn't have to compete with often superior European equipment.
Another good idea for AH would be to have one arena like the current setup, and a second arena as a 2-sided Western-European planeset arena with a RPS in place. Haven't a lot of people been asking for just such a setup?
Again, I stress--just because it hasn't been done in AH before, doesn't mean it CAN'T be done. Separate arenas CAN and WILL work.

I only talked about two identical three country MAs.
CT is actually starting to work now when they included stats and field capture possibility. I think CT will soon have more players when people gradually realize that they can fly historical match-ups at CT with the slight cost of reduced radar range.
Now MA is for careless fun and CT for more serious "WWII-simming" :)

What about regional servers? In addition to the US server, there could be one in Europe, and one in East Asia or Australia.

Although I'm defintely a fan of Nimitz's idea of a second (kinda 3rd actually when CT is added in) arena, I think it would be better going with a different format entirely than what one see's in both the MA and CT. Those two really are quite similar in the underlying play format I think.
I mentioned in another thread that a strictly Furball arena might be good to see. No base captures, etc, just furballs. I know there's lots of nights where I have no real desire to involve myself in the ongoing strategic base-warrior battles that are the norm in MA (heh, or to listen to it either for that matter). Such an arena would be a nice change if you want to just get into some fast and furious fights.
In that other thread it was also mentioned the the Dueling arena is basically set like that now. To that I'm not sure as it seems its shut down indefinitely, so not sure what's up there.

The solution.
Create your won "perfect" terrain and submit it to HTC.
That is all:)

The CT will grow. We're close to getting our new 2-sided terrains in there that will not be available in the MA. Right now we're having to stick with the baltic which we've had for 4 weeks. That causes a little apathy. It will soon be over and we'll have at least 4 or 5 terrains in rotation. Bear with us. :)

Mindanao isn't the problem. Mindanao is the prettiest and most complex terrain we have in Aces High. The problem is that we get stuck in Mindanao and can't reset it while the others reset quickly, especially if there is a numbers imbalance.
The problem is that we don't have a terrain rotation policy that guarantees we don't get stuck in one terrain.
While I understand the attractiveness of the CT to many, personally, I would rather have toothpicks shoved under my fingernails than face a steady diet of the CT. I like flying to a target, never knowing if I'm going to encounter 262s or a swarm of La7s or N1KJ2s. In the CT, if I'm LW, yep, I'm going to see spits and typhoons. If I am allied, 109s and 190s.
Besides, if we don't have swarms of La7s, doras and N1KJ2s, channel 1 won't have the same entertainment value. :)
