Title: Radeon or Nvidia
Post by: olddobe on January 19, 2002, 08:59:42 PM
I have a question that I would appreciate some advice on.I'm thinking of trying for a few more fps,and wondering what my best buy would be,or maybe I should leave well enough alone.
System

1000Mhz Intel P3
512 Megs ram
Tyan MB
Via chip
Asus 7700 GTS
SB Live
Maxtor 5400 HD
Older Gateway 75 hertz limit 17 monitor
I get about 50 fps down to 30's in hvy stuff.I run 1024x768 16 bit.
This is with Vsync on, max FR 60 setting. Was thinking Radeon or newer Nvidia might help, but I figure my MB-chipset-monitor,will hold back performance.
I fly with Vsync on because I believe in the rubber bullet theory with it off.
Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You could squeeze out a few more fps by going to a GF 3 card, but honestly I would doubt you notice a major difference.   Your framerates should already be high enough to be playable all the time. :)

A Geforce 3 or Radeon 8500 will make a large difference in your framerates at 1024x768 in many situations (smoke comes to mind), but durring most of your gametime, you wont notice much improvement (framerate will be higher, but your doing fine now).  AH runs well with only a "good" video card most of the time, large fields or smoke being the time you may wish for better, but is it worth $300 ???

Dude go for the Gainward Ge-Force 3 Ti200 you can find it at pricewatch.com for around $156.  Every review that I have read says that its the most kick bellybutton card around and is meant to be overclocked.  As soon as I get some more dinero I'm gonna by this puppy.

No idea about the Radeon, but with GF3 Ti500 the hvy cloud covers and smokes have the same fps impact as the sun: none.

I have better fps with my geforce2 ultra than an ATI 8500 275mhz radeon running 1280 x 2024 32 bit color. Better pix on desktop with ATI but more fps with ultra
