Title: Dweeby but genuine question
Post by: Tjay on January 20, 2002, 11:28:14 AM
Someone outline the advantage of the CT over the MA for me please. I thought it was just for air to air combat with no tactical or strategic diversions, but recent posts about the futility of missions in the MA suggest that's not true.

Very limited radar allows almost undetected missions, at the expense of hardly being able to find a fight as a singleton.

An appropriately matched plane set; with appropriate perk planes, at the expense of having your perks wiped off every (two?) weeks.

An almost empty arena allowing 1 vs. 1 fights for around 30 secs, until the other 2 guys in there figure out where you are, then you get ganged just the same.

Full (as far as I can tell) strat with full (as far as I can tell) weirdness.

A refreshingly empty chat buffer, as all the usual Ch1 mouths are usually in the MA sneering at every one else for not being in the CT; and a definite freedom from "JOIn missION NOW!!! mISSion UP!".

The atmosphere, when there's enough people to create one, is very good, and quite similar to the old AW FT. Flying around for ages looking for a fight (no dar); is not; and you need to be a CT regular if you have any aspirations of a perk ride.

YMMV

I love that when I up in a Russian aircraft, I know my only opponants will be German/Axis.  Historical imersion!

This is also my favorite part, although Seeker's description of the FT atmosphere runs a close second.  He accurately notes that one often has to search to find a fight, but this is a chicken-and-egg thing.  If people fly there, more will come (I think I first heard this in a movie about dead baseball players).

Whether you decide to stay or not, you mustmustmust come see the Stalingrad terrain.

Like the old WB HA.. it is "historical" planesets.   If that is the only way you get immersion then it will be worth the fact that "historical" planesets are either mindnumbing sameness (109/190 vs something)  or laughingly lopsided (190 vs spit5).

I find looking for the fights a plus.  You have to keep your eyes pealed.

My first missino in the CT was one of my favorites in my limited time in AH.

Took a Yak up and headed towards the counters. Counters mind you, not cons. Just enough to give me a general idea where the baddies are, but not enought to give me a direct intercept course. Fine by me.

Anyhow, there is a 109 hanging out just over the cloud layer. I don't have quite enough E to do this, so I get into the clouds to get some E... We spent close to 10-15 minutes manuevering, trying to line up a shot. With the cloud cover I kept losing him (I assume he kept losing me too but I'm a dweeb, what do I know?) A Fellow Ruskie joined in the fight, but you can't call it a gang-bang, because another 109 entered the fray as well. It was 2v2 showdown. I wish I knew how it ended, but I was the first to die.

So much fun. And most importantly to me, the people there were generally pleasant. Not a lot of chest beating, or whining on chanel 1. That's one thing about the CT that will dissapear as soon as numbers show up.

"Just enough to give me a general idea where the baddies are..."

Kind of forces one to  "keep (thier) head on a swivel"  huh?   I wonder if that what was how aircombat in WWII was like? :)    I to o enjoy the CT very much. Hope to see you (and others) in there more often.

It's had a buggy, problematic launch but the CT has no where to go but up imo.
