Before you say it I know there was only one built. The Military Production Board is responsible for denying Lockheed the time needed to tool up for mass production but this plane flew in 1943. It is an excellent USAAF perk and it presents an airplane that will help fight off the LW super-types.
It is 40mph faster then the P-38J at 40,000ft (432mph in Mil. Pow.).
Climb to 20,000ft in 5 minutes flat (Mil Pow) was achieved by the use of paddle blade props.
Maximum altitude attained was 45,000 with an estimated delivery maximum of 48,000ft after a better cowling fit was achieved and the heavy paint they used was removed.
It carries 110gallons more fuel internally then other P-38 models and its range was some 10-15% greater.
This would be very nice!

See action?? Bah. What matters is was it produced and deployed? P-38K saw as much flight time as the GO-229. Both were prototypes and neither ever rolled out the factory door as a production model.
I would love to fly either to see what they would be like, though. maybe in SWOLW II ??

The P-38K would be THE P-38 perk plane. Its performance is marginally better than the P-38L (a bit faster and bit better at climbing).
Unlike the Go-229, the P-38K did fly as a working prototype, albeit it being a heavily modified P-38E. It was ready for production, being tested and all. Actually, the first P-38J-1-LO was taken from the production line and fitted with the F-15 engines and the HS props. This plane was delivered to the AAC for testing. The modified E model also served as the test mule for the J model intercoolers. So, there was the modified P-38E that was used to test the concept as an unofficial XP-38K, and the P-38K-1-LO, which was a reworked P-38J-1-LO.
Therefore, two examples were actually built.
All test data comes from Warren Bodie's personal archive, although the original P-38K test report generated at Eglin Field can be obtained from the National Archives on microfilm (you must buy the entire roll) or visit the their facility in College Park, Maryland (just northeast of Washington, D.C.), where you can scroll through the roll and print a photocopy. It's a good idea to to plan on spending several days searching for specific documents. Most of the microfilm rolls are not indexed for content.

I did some research one time into a local legend. I was able to get micro film from the National Archives thru my local library. They sent them to the local library where I was able to view them. It was really neat stuff from the military from the 1850's. I was reading letters about the local Indian wars in their own hand writing. It was cool. Found out some things that they didn't mention in the local history books. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
