we need to all know about this as the off topic BBS's dont seem to carry any weight.
Tone I hope you read this as you are one of the only reasons I ever used RW. Gator be damned!! Im pastine below what I learned from my Squaddies and how to divest your self of it.
Sad that they would do this.....Gator is spyware....tracks all kinds of things that you do....The Quote from the GRC/spyware
newsgroup Earlier versions of RW don't have this problem
:}----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I found that Roger Wilco,
the video games voice chat app. that allows gamers
to communicate with each others hands free has decided to sell its soul to
the devil... (er, gator.com)
Anyway, it installs an exe file in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory called
FSG.exe and makes it a system run command by adding a link to it in the
registry key
\\HKEY_LOCAL_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ or
something like that, I'd have to look it up.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------And the
FIX.............------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Fortunatly,
Gator is installed via the FSG.exe downloader...so, if you
do want to install RW, all you have to do is use ZoneAlarm or another
outbound firewall to deny Internet access to FSG. Then, just End Task
the FSG program and delete the executable. Uncheck the FSG/Trickler box
under Startup in MSCONFIG to disable the registry entry.
It's still sneaky and underhanded of them to bundle this with RW, but at
least it's easy to disable and get rid of... Too bad that, since the
death of BattleCom, there aren't really any good alternatives to RW for
gamers... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)
Tone man....this has got to go! The DOD should know better than to try to pull this kinda toejam over on us.......
LLB OUT!!!!!!!!!

If you download a new RW version there is bundled with SPY program called Gator
-
I hate gator!, it can byte my ass!
-
Well, back in september when I went our for a couple of weeks one of my sisters put the hands on my PC and now I have that F*king gator installed in my sistem. Anytime Istart the computer I close it INSTANTLY...but I am tired of doing it.
Someone can tell me how to remove this kind of programs? because I have NO idea (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)
-
just find the gator folder and kill it.
-
Gator software shows at the add/remove programs folder at control panel. Uninstall it from there like a normal application. After that you can remove gator from your HD.
I was pissed off like hell also when I found out Gator came with RW and I sent them a reply threatening to sue their asses.. I never gave permission to install their crap on my computer, and the RW installation didnt
even warn about it. Just shows that you can't trust ANYTHING on the internet.

I DONT BELIEVE YOU!!! LIAR!!

I looked in my Add/Remove Programs and I don't see Gator. I have RW. Do I have a different (older) version? If so I don't think I will get a newer one if they are pulling that crap.
-
Same sit as JimDandy, no FSG/Gator crap, thankfully. I have been annoyed by bloody Comet Cursor once in a blue moon though (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

(Now staying away from new RW files)

First thing I did when I upgraded was remove that crap.
And I never would have upgraded or used this new version had I not needed to reformat and had failed to save the last one.

Funny, I didnt need to do any registry editing....all I did was uninstall it from add/remove programs.

Gator is a spyware program like Advert.dll which records and sends user info over the net. GetRight is one program that installs spyware and won't work if you delete it. So you edit the registry so that program never runs. Everyone on the planet should do a search on C: drive for Advert.dll and delete it if found. It's a very nasty little program that can do all kinds of harm.
Gator sounds like it does the same thing. Hell for all we know it's sending recordings of conversations to some Jerkoff in Virgina! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Never heard of it, but it sounds like software that snoops through your system, sees what you do, what you use, how you use it, and sends that info back to the company. Supposedly to gather info on consumer usage and to track demographics and such. The potential for maliscious action is certainly built-in if this is true.

I had some problems related to RW a couple of months ago, so in an attempt to solve them I re-downloaded RW.Sure enough, Gator + one more application suddenly popped up on my HD.
Mailed them to show my dissapointment (thought the guys were "our kind").

Gator: http://www.gator.com/ (http://www.gator.com/)
The newest RW release has this bullsh&t program built into it:
http://www.rogerwilco.com/products/downloads/rwdload.html (http://www.rogerwilco.com/products/downloads/rwdload.html)
RW "Mark Ic mod1 (with Gator Offer Companion)"
You actually get TWO programs that are force installed on your PC (whether you want them or not) and well,, tis not a good thing imo. I forget the name of the 2nd program. I had to remove it too.
Is another voice utility for AH an option ? OR is RW now too far built in? My thought is, what will RW include in future releases that are unnecesary and unwanted? Why are we not told by "Hear Me" in clear and plain terms what they are seeding our computers with?
-Westy
[This message has been edited by Westy (edited 02-02-2001).]
-
The second program is "Offer Companion" if I remember right.
On the up side, removing Gator and Offer Companion from Add/Remove Programs solved the problem for me, and RW still works fine. It's not as nasty as some of the programs out there, but still not good.
Bottom line is that we should be given the *option* during the install process to install this extra crap or not. Make it the default if you like, but give me the option not to install it. Putting it on my machine behind my back is bad juju.
I hate to say it but.... didn't MS put out a new voice app with DX8? Gamevoice or something? I wonder if it will work well, and if it can be easily integrated into games. I think that was the idea, but I don't know if it actually made it into the DX 8 release or not.

Well for those guys that never flew in BrandX flight sim AKA War Birds. RW was started by a coupke of good ol boys that flew over there in the DOD squad(Dweebs of Death) The guys with the funny hats with props on the top of em(They REALLY wear these thing I'm serious!)
The founder of the squad and one of the main programmers of RW was a guy by the handle of Tone. All I can hope is since they got bought out that he or the other guys from that squad(they flew in AH in Beta)didnt have anything to do with it. If they did then shame shame shame...... I'm not going to be useing RW anymore and I would suggest that HTC take a long look at whether they wanna keep this company in thier downloads or not IF they are gonna pull crap like this.

This is very interesting. I did a search and found that gator (fsg.exe was not on my system. I did a search for Advert.dll and found it listed twice. I tried to delete it and could only delete one of the files. The other one which is in the windows sys file WILL NOT DELETE. I get an error message telling me it can't be deleted and that the disk may be full etc.
How do I get rid of this bugger???? It does NOT show up on the add / delete files list. I had to do a file search to find it.

If it says it's a Windoze system file it's a lie. That file is NOT required to operate Windoze or any part of it. Odds are you installed TWO programs that use it. GetRight is one I know uses it, and it won't let you kill it either. I killed the copy I had by going into DOS mode and murdering it there. If I were you I'd track down any program you installed on the date Advert.dll says it was created. It's listed in the properties for the file.
Once you do that you can figure out which program installed advert.dll and kill the offending program. If that doesn't work, manually go into DOS mode and kill it from there. If Windoze gets pissy, then you've got a problem. Another thing to try is accessing the registry and looking for any sign of Advert.dll being used. If you find an entry that lists it, kill that entry. That should let you remove the file.

Battlecom is a much better alternative. It has far better sound quality, and seems to use less bandwidth. Also, you can open up multiple channels and switch back and forth between them. Makes it nice for scenarios when you need to stay in touch with a couple different flights. You can download it for free at http://www.shadowfactor.com (http://www.shadowfactor.com)

Im suprised there is no comment from HTC on this.

Tone was gone before this happened. Here is what he posted on the Warbirds BBS about it. This was on December 29th, 2000 at 11:47am
<clip>
Sorry I was not more proactive in announcing this, but frankly I've not cared to think about it more than I've already done so. But, after riling one WB squad pretty thoroughly, I thought I should post this to the WB community.
I know most of you have RW already installed. But for any who go to download and re-install the Windows version of RW, you'll find that the installer is quite different and it necessarily involves installation of an unrelated application entitled "Gator" (a browser companion that offers "coupons" -- well presented but salesy).
Gator is probably not the sort of thing many WarBirders would choose to add to their computing day .. and at the moment at least, it appears that getting and installing the latest RW requires you to do so. But, for you guys who have generally been a discreet and supportive circle of friends who have guided RW through thick and thin, I wanted to point out that the old Gator-free installer yet lives at
(Link Deleted by instruction)
That said, I will ask that you not post that link in other forums, but feel free to direct fellow WB'ers to this post. I do not want the world going to get that version, as the parent company has recently laid off 44% of the staff (including several WarBirders), and the stock is trading at 5% of its level a year ago.
Feel free to use the older installer referenced above, but if you recently downloaded the Gator-laden one, please keep this perspective in mind before bemoaning the horror of having to hit a button to uninstall Gator.
Thanks, and have a fun New Year.

Farewell from the BattleCom Team
We've grown into quite a community, have we not? And through this community, we've grown together, using voice technology to make this world a smaller place. After 3 years, we've decided that it's time to take the next bold step in gaming.
Unless you've been living in a hole for the past year, you already know that the "next bold step" is SideWinder Game Voice, our complete solution to help bring the full power of your voice into your gaming experience. We're excited about the direction voice communication is headed, and for the opportunities that Game Voice represents. If you've appreciated Battlecom, we're sure you'll love Game Voice.
Unfortunately, with every bold step forward, there's a little bit of discomfort. After November 17th, we'll be picking up our bags and heading over to www.gamevoice.com, (http://www.gamevoice.com,) and support for BattleCom will discontinue. While support@shadowfactor.com will permanently shut its doors, the Battlecom Web site, including the BattleCom bulletin boards, Support, Compatible Sound Card and Games lists, and Public Server List will remain. In addition, the BattleCom client and server will continue to be available for free download.
As part of the transition, we're running a contest—15 lucky registered BattleCom owners will win a free Game Voice. Head over to the Contest area to enter. Not a registered BattleCom user? We'll be running a Game Voice contest for all BattleCom users in the near future.
We at Shadowfactor want to thank you for your continual support of Battlecom. This isn't the end of the book—simply a new chapter in our journey. As we say goodbye to BattleCom, we want to invite you to join us in this next leg of the journey with Game Voice!

I found Advert.dll on my system too.
I'd like to kick the F**Ks that are putting it out in the head. I tried deleting it and couldn't get access (sharing violation) until I close ALL my IE windows. So the piece of sh*t software loads up with your browser to watch what you do.
I also found another advert.dll under my soundblaster mediatalk directory, but this seems to be something a lot more innocent (and smaller).

Hiya Ram1. Wow. Just listen to what you're saying. That's kind of like HiTech and Pyro getting all the grief that the AGW folks, such as you, lay on them for any problems (percieved or real) with WB's today - but they haven't been there for over two years.
If you read LLB's post it's obvious he is highly critical of RW and it's current practice with the "additional" programs. He did not attack Tone or anyone else specifically. But Tone and any of the original RW guys have to expect that any current problems with RW may be associated with them simply because RW is attibuted to them.
I've noted for myself that your the type who wears two hats.
-Westy
-
Hmm, I don't recall giving HT or Pyro any grief over problems in WBs. You got any facts to back that one up? My main problem with AH is that its an evolutionary not revolutionary step, with not enough differentiation with WBs and no strategic land capture model.
My main beef with llbm post was that he didn't contact Tone directly, his issue could of easily been resolved. Tone is a good guy who does alot for WBs and the community and doesn't need to be dragged into something he is not a part of.
My concerns with Pyro and HT is that they play favoritism to certain players and are condesending to other players who question some of their decisions. They tend to be very closed minded on certain issues and I've seen no evidence of that changing with AH.
In WBs we have more player control then ever before between the CMs, Trainers, and many other contributors. Its much more a players game with more to come.
Yeah my opinions are biased, yeah I got some baggage, so if that means I wear two hats, so be it, your entitled to your opinion. Just make sure you got the facts straight before you form them.
Ram1
-
Ram1, first you tell LLB that Tone has nothing to do with this and then you say LLb should have contacted Tone by email about it. Well, you're wrong. This is an "AH" community and in it are a number of people who have a major problem with one of the features provided with the AH product. A feature that is benign to people unless they happen to be PC savvy or have respectable members who speak up, as LLB did. So it should be public. LLB posted about a major problem with RW and his post was not a personal attack on Tone. You definately are wrong on this. And you are certainly way out of bounds telling anyone here what they should do as regards to anything having to do with AH or HTC.
As for my opinion, yup, I'm certainly entilted to it. And you yours. My take from reading AGW for over a year is you're pretty hostile when it comes to AH and HTC. If the AGW's search feature worked worth a hill of beans I'ld look up specifics. But you're not fooling anyone who reads here or AGW in saying you've not given Pyro or HiTech grief over WB's.
Again, my opinion. You've stated yours which is quite the opposite of mine.
If you were at all concerned about this YOU could have emailed Tone to let him know that there was a stink being raised, by a number of subscribers to a major corporate licenser of his developed product, so that he could see fit to speek for himself - if he felt the need..
Now, you're on the WB's staff correct? Your posting here in this manner, imo, can only be an embarrasing reflection on that community and the staff. You may want to rethink posting here period, imo once again.

You're not an employee but being an official trainer and operator of an arena? Well, that got "staff" written all over it to me.
Westy, don't know where all the anger and defensiveness is from but if that's what floats your boat, have at it.
RAM1, there is not one itsy bitsy teeny bit of anger or defensiveness in my post - intended nor inflected in anyway shape or form. Perhaps the reason you see that is actually due to the color of your glasses?
BTW, who said you were the BBS police for AH on who can or cannot post here?
I never said you could not. I only remarked your continued doing so could be seen as an embarassment to WB's. IMO, of course
Besides my post was to llbm not you
Ahh. Well. Should have taken it email, huh? Strange enough some guy, using your handle too way up above there, recommended doing just that to someone else.
It was not about AH it was about getting facts before dragging someone's name up who had nothing to do with the problem
Well, what are the facts RAM1? Seems we're going in circles here. RW has now added in spyware and useless utilities. Fact.
Said RW program can now seriously degrade a persons pc performance as well as collect personal information about them. Fact.
But where do you see anyone at all accusing Tone in particular of perpetuating this?

WOW been working on my new HD for the last couple of dazzzzze and have been unable to get in here. As for Tone's involvement...when I left WB's he was still the owner operator of RW. I read somewhere(but forgot till my 2nd post) that Tone had sold the company to one of those companies that looks for small good ideas and exploits them to the hilt after they own them(An obvious fact after the latest bunch of DL crap we have been put through) I have met Tone at two or three WB's CONs and like the guy. Hence the second post. I didnt know if he was still involved with RW or not as some companies like IEN keep the old founders on till they piss them off enough by f#$%ing up their beautiful flight Sim that they leave (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)....or voice system for that matter.
Spit FM in WB's. Sorry Ram1 if we dont see eye to eye here but I must respectfully say that your full of S#*T on that one as I flew WB's for 4 years. I left WB's and came with my squad here and LOVE it. I recently had a wild boreing hair up my bellybutton and tried WB's again. I dont EVER remember the Spit flying like a FW190 in the SIM I left. I remember an overmodeled Spit that flew almost as good as I imagine a Pitt Special flying. For Crist Sakes a damn Me 109f out turns a Spit in your SIM! So give me a break on that one as I can feel and see the diffrence between night and day. As for Westy, he's a squadmate of mine that escaped AW and found a home with the MOL here in AH. You fly your SIM I'll fly mine. Lets keep it that way. I'll stay over here and you stay over there.

http://agw.dogfighter.com/agw//Forum3/HTML/017255.html (http://agw.dogfighter.com/agw//Forum3/HTML/017255.html)
It's not at all funny how he covered his fellow Warbirds friends yet completely failed to do likewise here and give us any notice what so ever. "We" who have use his product as an integral part of our sim.
I've got Battlecom and Team Sound now if anyone is interested in testing out, and hopefully using, an alternative to RW.

Again.. sorry for the Gator thing.
Gator can be separately uninstalled... I'd rather you did this than think of getting angry. When I was told that revenue shortfalls demanded steps like this, I insisted that the app be separately uninstallable, and I verified that this step worked as advertised. I did that not as an employee, as I'd been laid off months before.
A recent news flash is that Norton Anti-Virus recently issued new profiles for identifying viruses, which generates a false positive on Gator's trickle installer. I have reverted to the Gator-less installer for the interim to avoid (undue) paranoia.
Gator may again be added back at some future point, but I will try to keep a Gator-less installer available to those who I feel the strongest sense of shared community -- WB and AH and WWIIOL players. I've valued your support and friendship for 5 years now, and have been more disappointed than even the most agitated of you to see it become necessary to offer RW under less liberal terms than originally was the case.
Your being patient and uninstalling Gator without feeding the fires of angry posting wars of "betrayal" at our hands honors the fact that focusing exclusively on making a simple fun tool for free cost us more than can be made good by clicking a button marked "uninstall".
A Gator-less Mark Ic mod1 installer may be found at
ftp://joe.rogerwilco.com/pub/rw/old_rw_Win32_mk1c_mod1.exe
I'd ask that you freely make use of it, but not advertise it beyond this relatively close set of BBS's (AH+WWIIOL+AGW). That would risk someone asking me to remove this installer from circulation.
Thanks.. I hope you can accomodate me here.

It is everyones responsibily to keep people up on what is happening with a product. But don't say that it's Tone's fault.
Nice to see the "friendlyness" is still there between AH and WB's.
<opens door........and walks out shaking head........>

Thanks Tone!
Both apps that get added are simply and easily un-installed. Gator puts a tray icon up, so you know something is going on. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Hitting un-install is a small price to pay for a great FREE product like RW.

You'll never go wrong with a pig!" -- Thomas Pynchon, "Gravity's Rainbow"

Thanks, Leph.
I hope that some day more vigorous development takes place on RW (I believe it has become a property of Gamespy at this point, but that is not yet clear), and that more conventional revenue ideas are examined for its future.
There are other great tools out there, as well.. particularly for sims that are PC-only. I hope everyone finds one they enjoy, and consider buying any that carry a licensing cost -- that demonstration makes a more fertile ground for competitive products in the same space.

Tone cannot be everywhere. RogerWilco is not only used by flight simmers. It's used by lots of squadrons, clans, you name-it, in many Internet-based multiplayer team game.
<S> Tone! Thx for clearing that up.
