This problem just started recently, no new software added to my box for some months I might add....
Flying along, screen freezes up, because, in the background of Win98, its in the process of losing the X36 joystick in the control panel...screen unfreezes in AH, and no joystick control. Go to desktop and the X36 is gone from control panel. Re-boot enables Win98 to find it once again. Its becoming more and more often now. Very strange.

I assume its USB, any other game controllers on USB? Anything else USB?
How does your IRQ assignments look in Device Manager? Anything sharing IRQ with USB controller? Have you added/changed any hardware?
-
Its not sharing IRQ with it.
It is USB.
I have analog rudders as a second joystick. I've had this set up for about 2 years, no problems til the last month or so.

Neg, Rip, I haven't had that happen before. I have USB X36 combo as joystick 1 and CH Pro USB pedals as joystick 2 under Win 98 SE.
Now sometimes I've had the joystick panel not remember that the pedals are there, and it requires a reboot. I've never lost them in flight though; they just aren't there from the get go. I've gotten into the habit of checking them before I open a flight sim now.
Maybe our two problems are related somehow... *shrug*

Maybe the JS's internal chip is losing communication, thus Win98 suddenly says "Nope not there, bye bye..".

one thing that helped stablize my X36 (at the time) was getting a powered USB hub. It wouldn't lose the stick but it would throw it way off to one side, unplugging the USB conn then sticking it back in helped but with the powered hub on the desktop and plugging it and my CH USB peds into it seems to have gotten rid of that issue ... USB port voltage idssue? Dunno but it works plus I don't have to crawl under the desk any more for USB stuff...
-
Well... USB installs and uninstalls devices as they are plugged in/unplugged. Perhaps you have a faulty connection? Have you tried putting the stick in a different USB connector?
Mash it in there with some chewing gum. :)

Had some wierd stuff before Rip, if your setup is anything like my desktop when not in use the wires are all coiled outa the way.
The cause of my problems were the wiring breaking down internally due to repeated bending getting joystick out then putting away again.
Try moving the wiring whilst flying and see if it causes your problem to appear.

I have to unplug and then replug in my rudder peddles every time I start AH. MY stick will be locked full left and no peddles untill I do this. It happens sometimes during the game too, I'll be on autoclimb and shut it off and the plane banks hard left untill I do the plug stuff. X-36 with CH pro usb peddles.
