Title: So?

Examples of some changes from 1978 to 2002: ``sons of God'' to ``children of God'' in Matthew 5:9, and ``a man is justified by faith'' to ``a person is justified by faith'' in Romans 3:28.

sounds reasonable to me. It's not as if they were playing with the original aramaic. I wonder how close the NIV comes to that?

The original Old Testament can be read in Hebrew and the New Testament in classical Greek.

For religious people that do not care to study those two languages, correct translation should be made by the people who care. It may not be possible to translate meaning word for word, but the necessary accuracy could be achieved anyway by using multiple words, etc.

The fact that someone would choose to distort the word of God based on the fleeting notions of modern politicall correctness shows me how much they (translators) actually believe what they are translating.

Apparently the word of God is more of a guideline than a rule.

And the lord said. "Let me make a suggestion".

You guys are funny. PC is this, PC is that, as if PC was some 3 headed monster out to grab your souls. Try looking at the facts instead of the jargon.

What exactly bothers you about the examples I posted? Are there other changes that bother you more? Why not just buy the King James Version then?

kneejerk - the call of the redbreasted conservative

Heheh, ya got to give them an "A" for consistency, when they try to push something through congress, it always has "its for the children" attached to the sales pitch. :)

They wouldn't have the wit, or the openmindedness to accomplish that task.

Still nothing of substance huh?

"open mindedness"

Your right about the wit part. No one else, with your record, could say that with a straight face.

Well easymo? what about my record? I would dearly love to hear what you think my record is.
I tried to make a discussion out of this thread but you insist on baiting....well fire away sparky. I know what I've said, and I know what I've read from you. What kind of intellectual gems have you shared recently besides the longest signature in the history of the board?

Your record is try hard to be condescending and blow air. Don't pretend that you want an intellectual discussion, you just wanna blow air, toot your horn, all that jazz. Maybe these guys don't feel very strong about the subject. Who cares? It's a different translation of the Bible, as if we don't have enough now. Well, let's debate about it. Naah.

Do you, or do you not believe the Bible is true target? No? Then why even bother? other than the oppurtunity to get into yet another debate in the O'club. Whooopty crap, sounds like a blast.

Leave easymo alone you goof.

Heh, you better decide: is the bible the word of god or not?

If it is, you really shouldn't fek around with it. It'll piss him off. So be it that it can be seen as an incredible sexist collection of works: if that was what the man said, that was what the man meant.

Women who have a problem with it: too bad. It's the words of da man.

PCness. Heh. By the end of this year, all references to violence will be removed too :).

Sodomy...cannot have that in a holy scripture. Cut it away.

:D

The Bible has changed a lot during its time on earth- this is no different.

But the canges are still retarded and dangerous.

AND NOW THIS! (from CNN)

• In some cases "Christ" is changed to "Messiah."

So even Christ is politically incorrect in the Bible.

For all you liberals out there Im not particulary religious, dont read Bible, dont attend church, but I respect those that do and I respect my heritage and culture.

From the Chicago Tribune:

Quote
Today's New International Version (TNIV), as the Bible is called, is hardly a radical departure from the New International Version, which has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide since 1978, and upon which the new edition is based.

Still, some conservative Christians are already saying that they will scrutinize the new translation, due out in April, to make sure the publishers haven't succumbed to "political correctness" in their adoption of gender-neutral wording.

Just 30 percent of the changes in the TNIV are related to gender. And the new edition still uses male pronouns to refer to God and Jesus.

But in Mathew 5:9, "sons of God" has been changed to "children of God." And "brothers" has become "brothers and sisters" when the original text does not specify a gender preference.

Please excuse my condesending hot air. And my apologies to easymo. I have read some of your past posts about the necessity for a liberal viewpoint, even if you disagree with it. I assume that is what you meant by "inventing me".

Debating topics in the O-club Hblair.....um, isn't that what happens in here?

I am not advocating changing the Bible, I am wondering why there is this outpouring of negativity about something that may not be what you think it is. The NIV Bible has beeen around a long time, and it may have even opened up the word to more people due to its more modern translation.
