If you haven't tried it, it's worth giving it a try IMO. It's very stable, certainly better than Netscape 4.7x or 6.x. The only minor drawback is that the free version has a small ad in the top right corner, but it's no big deal.
I've found it loads pages significantly faster than IE with default settings. (You can tweak IE to make it nearly as fast though... ) Most every page looks correct, although there are some that look a little funny with text positioning. (AH homepage is one of the few I've found.)
What's interesting about Opera is the fact that you can have multiple browser windows open at the same time AND on the screen at the same time. It is also certainly more secure than IE.
Some other nice things:
You can turn off pop-up ads! :D
Extensive customization options.
It runs using the Sun Java VM, meaning there are versions for nearly every type of computer.
Very nice websearch function.
Right click shortcuts. (For example: clicking the right mouse button and doing a quick stroke to the left is like clicking the back button.)

I love it. I use it at work and at home. I do keep Ie 5.x handy for some web pages that hose Opera (and Netspcae) up.

Um... maybe I'm not reading this right, but I have several IE windows open and on screen right now... why is this special?

When you open up, say 5 IE browsers in Windows, you get 5 IE windows. In Opera, you only have ONE window open, but within that one window you can have more then one browser. You can also tile the windows vertically or horizontally to view more then one window at a time.
I use Opera both as my main web browser, and also my e-mail client, which is great IMO.
I also like the fact that I can customize the main window by changing the background to an image, change the location of the address bar, and also that there is a search box next to the address bar that uses google... you can also magnify any site up to 1000% ...
Anyway, I agree with bloom that Opera is a great web browser, and that its worth your time to D/L it and start using it...
