This can be attributed, in part, to the breakdown of the small town way of life.

No longer content to buy goods and services from local home-grown vendors, Mr. & Mrs. Rural American now flock en masse to large, coroporate super-save centers that use locals for employees, and consitently put them in departments they know nothing about.
