Title: Public Service Announcement
Post by: capt. apathy on February 06, 2002, 08:36:19 PM
If, while driving on the freeway, you notice many other cars having to pass you on the right hand side.

please take the first available exit and NEVER DRIVE ON THE FREEWAY AGAIN.

lead, follow, or get out of the way.

I know the feeling. My trip is 45 minutes each way. Last night it took an hour and a quarter and this morning an hour and a half. The &#^*ing water ppl and their bodgy pipes. One had blown big time and taken out the main road on the route I take.

I sympathise with your plight. I will hold a candlelight vigil.

Sounds like someone spent too much time on Highway 26

Whats that? Is it a highway with one lane only and open to all heavy traffic and senior citizens?

Who else has noticed that when a driver whizzes by you, the reaction is to wave a fist and curse them for being dangerous. But when you do the same to someone else you feel like you've pulled off some masterful maneouvre, they suck and you rule. Anyone? Must be just me.

Actually I-5, doing the east Portland to Albany daily.  Been doing this for 4 months now, only 3 more till this jobs over.

Why, oh why, do these people need to drive in the left lane when they refuse to push the accelerator?

My favorite - someone who thinks the acceleration lane to get on a highway is a good place to stop, look for traffic, then proceed to merge in at 30mph.

I feel your pain Captain.  Here in Kalifornia, the right lane is the de facto fast lane.  :(

100% agree, never has there been a bigger collection of morons than the california freeways/streets/parking garages/driveways. the rest of the us isnt far behind.

i wish people would follow the right-of-way rule walking in crowded cities also. the result of ignorance of this rule is a big stupid posturing and dancing session.

or maybe just get off the phone and think about their physical relation to those around them. then adjust accordingly to maximize everyones attempt to get somewhere and cause the least displacement and obstruction.

sounds simple doesnt it? it is.....and thats a sad commentary on how america drives.

you want to see it done right? go to germany or switzerland.  ive never seen anything more beautiful than the grace people drive with on the autobahn.

they see you coming kilometers away and get over at the exact right moment - its  like a ballet.

i saw a 4-lane merge into a 2-lane due to construction, during munich's evening rush hour with NO visible delay - every car simply let one car in and fell in behind another. no ego, no 4x4 tough guy or "me-1st" mercedes just beautiful efficiency. (gives me chills)

then you come here and theres gramps convinced that 55 is damn fast enough and if they dont like it too bad. in the left llane 27 car lengths behiind the next guy...

wake up america - its just embarrassing.

I see you all have never driven in DC or it's immediate neighboring counties.

Ever seen a half hour trip turn into 2 hours? Happens daily here. If driving is a priveledge and not a right, how come there are so many tards on the road? Left lane= passing. If you aren't passing, get into the f'in right lane!

......that ya dont live in Holland.

Normal, western style motorways (or freeways to you yanks) have sensible junctions.......the slip road goes off the main carriageway, taking some of the traffic off......then there's a small straight section, then comes another slip road bringing more traffic on........so ya get a small 300m section between slip roads where, theoretically, there's slightly less traffic.

Not in Holland.

In Holland they bring traffic on first, an extra lane joins the motorway and in around 100m goes off again.......so at every junction you've got a mad swerving mess as people coming on try to avoid the people getting off.   That's Clogic for ya.

I find it hard to believe that there's anything worse than Sunset Hwy (Hwy 26) at rush hour.  Basically a 4 lane hwy (2 in each direction).  On one end you have the major high tech area and on the other end you have Portland and all the in-city jobs and off/on ramps about every 1 mile along it's length.  In about the middle, you have a hwy that ends and funnels into it in both directions and to top it off it's layed out beautifully east to west with a great shot of the rising/setting sun which has the amazing ability to blind you whether you're going toward or away from it.  In the short 2 mile stretch where it actually turns into 3 lanes, it's also hilly and curvey which naturally throws off the idiots trying to balance their checkbook, take a cell phone call and drink their morning coffee while driving.

I'm glad I now live in podunk Salem, OR.  :)

Title: In defense of CA drivers

I have driven all over the Country, and I have seen idiots everywhere. BUT! I would rather be driving 75 next to a California driver on the interstate than just about anyone else. Here is the breakdown as I have experienced it from worst to best:

Worst: New England - anywhere in New England. Once saw 30 cars run a stop sign....all in a row! Had a guy in Hartford turn right into me FROM THE LEFT LANE! He missed his turn!

Better: South - Depends on the area

Even better - Far West - Texas / Arizona / Nevada all pretty good and no traffic to speak of in most areas.

Best Drivers: California - We grow up in a car fer kris sakes!

Nicest Drivers: Northwest - In my experience.

I was in the Navy for 8 years, and have seen much of Europe (England, Scotland, Italy, France, Spain, Germany).

I lived in Jacksonville, Florida for 5 years, Seattle, Washington for 5 years, and lived in L.A. California for 5 years before moving to the boonies of Oregon.

My wife sees me curse and spit spiteful things at other drivers when I have to drive into Portland, I guess after Seattle and L.A. I've become hyper-sensitive to the stupidity of motorists.

Many of my relatives and friends say I have changed into a *redneck since moving out here, and my response is "If I'm a redneck, it's by choice, not by birth."

I'm totally content drivin' down lil' HWY 30 west of Longview Washington.

It's 15 miles from my home to work... it takes 20 minutes to do the drive. :)

*Note: Redneck defined as a Flannel shirt wearin',  heavy beard grownin', fishin', and huntin', suspender wearin' good ol' boy)

hehe, I agree with that New England comment.  flew up to Boston a few years back.   I was scared of 'em all!  Needless to say, out of fear our driving became limited to going from the hotel to the nearest T terminal and up to New Hampshire to visit some friends.

I-75 & 85 in Atlanta ain't fun either at rush hour.

I found Houston to not be as bad as I thought it would be the few times I've visited.

How many people lose their lives in the US as a result of car accidents? 50 000 a year?

Getting a driver's license in the US is dirt easy, and just as cheap. i wonder id this has something to do with it, or whether it might be attributed to Americans really not liking the safety belt.

I dunno. The US stats on people killed in car accidents still astound me.

while the ease of getting a licence is probably one reason for the high accident rate here another is the distance (at least in the western us) many of us travel to get to work or wherever, most major citys are several hundred miles apart.  we are very spread out here.

while my drive isn't typical it's not rare either. i drive over 600 miles per week and i've had jobs where i've driven double that

Here in Finland we have long distances too, but the new cars, car owning and car driving (gasoline tax is 75%, spare parts have 22% tax, etc.) is taxed beyond belief, so you cant reasonably drive over ~60km per day. If you dont want to use your daily salary for the fun of driving to work, that is....
Thats why we have 15% unemployment rate, people can only go to the job next door because of the fediddleing taxing of car ownership.
Did i mention the crappy roads? You dont even notice the difference when coming from soviet roads to Finnish roads. About 2% of the tax income from cars go back to road improvements etc. Even thinking this BS gets me soo angry..

Off topic? naaah..;)
