Title: Stick question
Post by: sling322 on February 10, 2002, 03:13:27 AM: My Saitek X36 has developed a spike problem when I pull back. It seems to spike to full up pitch when I pull the stick back slightly. Is there anyway to clean these or am I just SOL?

Post by: Grayarea on February 10, 2002, 06:24:47 AM: Don't know about x36 pots myself, but if they can be dissasembled then you can wipe the surface of the pot clean and apply a very thin layer of vasaline.

This works great on TM gear.

Maybe some one has the URL for cowboys TM web site, I think they have pitures of this procedure.

I did it to my TM joystick and the spiking went compleatley.

Post by: DES on February 10, 2002, 09:29:39 AM: My X-36 started soing something similar. I opened it up and the pots had come loose, they were hot glued in place(refurbished unit), so I reglued them. This fixed the erratic behavior but then they weren't properly calibrated so I had to use Thrustmaster ProPanel to recallibrate and it's been fine since. Now if I could just get hazardscript working properly I could do away with my 98se partition and use XP only.

Post by: Maverick on February 10, 2002, 12:28:45 PM: If the pots are tight so there is no mechanical slop you might try spraying them with a bit of WD 40. That can help flush out the debri inside and allow them to be spike free. Best of all it is a fix you can do many times without gunking up the innards like with vaseline.

PS a spray lubricant designed for electircal connections or devices works well too.

Post by: 1776 on February 10, 2002, 04:01:50 PM: When I had my analog X36 the only way to cure the spiking is to clean the pots. You have to remove the cap on the pots and soak a piece of paper with denatured alcohol and wipe between the pot wiper and carbon. You will be shocked at all the loose carbon you will clean out doing this. You may have to do this a couple of times, but this will cure the problem for a long period of time:)

I wouldn't spray stuff on the pots as I would think that would attract dust and dirt, but that's just me. Do as you think best.

Post by: Tyro48 on February 10, 2002, 06:09:01 PM: You might also wnat to look at stick scaling, if u get to radical with the sliders toward the 90 % side it can cause the stick to appear to spike .
