Title: Carrier War...Coming to a CT near you!
Post by: Sabre on February 13, 2002, 03:56:07 PM
Grab your quinine pills and mosquito netting, boys and girls, because we're heading back to the sunny South Pacific.  This weekend.  The CT team brings you "Carrier War!"  Using the Philippine Island map as a backdrop, the naval and air forces of Japan will attempt to crush the combined might of Great Britain and the United States in an all-out naval slugfest.

Japan will control the Northern main islands of the Philippines, while the Allies will control Mindanao.  Both sides will be amply equiped with carrier and cruiser task forces, with the objective of controlling the map.  In a new twist, the carrier task groups have no cruisers (just three flattops), and will be unable to spawn landing craft.  The cruiser task groups (with three cruisers each) will be able to spawn landing craft but no aircraft (need a flight deck for that, you know;)).

Well get a complete planeset, base assignments, and victory conditions out before Saturday.  I just wanted to let you guys know what was coming up.

Whooo Ho! F6f's! yessss!

Question.. will the CV group be lost when the 1st of the 3 CV's is sunk?? Or does the respawn clock begin to tick when the last CV is sunk?

How 'hard' will the CV's be? How 'hard' will the Cruisers be?

(hard = bomb tonnage required to sink)

CT CREW! Always glad to have the Carriers back in the PTO! Like the idea of seperating the Carriers from the Cruisers. We can keep our ships out in deep water were they are better defended and the "Gun Club" can drive theirs up on the beach to blast the HELL out of things and send the Marines in. As it should be. :D

Question 1: Will the Corsairs still be limited to land bases?

Question 2: As asked above - If one CV is sunk will it disable all in the CVG?

Question 3: What are the chances of making the seperation of the CV & CA Groups permanent? At least in the CT.

You have to hit the correct CV to force a respawn of the fleet....and no, I'm not telling which is the correct one. ;)

1) Probably not, as there aren't that many land air bases in this terrain.

2) Only if you hit the "flagship" CV.  Since there are three CV's in each CVBG, you'll still have a deck for a good 10 minutes after your flagship goes down.

3) This is a terrain design issue, as well as an arena set up issue.  I have made the suggestion that the MA terrains be set up this way too, but that's HTC's call.  Fleet composition is set in the terrain editor, but what aircraft and vehicles are available from those fleets is determined by arena setings.  The Sicily/Malta terrain we'll be running in March, in conjunction with the Upcoming Invasion Sicily scenario, has cruiser-only fleets as well as your standard CV/CA fleets.  When we run that, the CV fleets will not have landing craft, but cruiser fleets and "convoys" will.

Sounds good Sabre!  I'm sure most are interested in seeing how the modified ship formations affects the gameplay.  It sounds like it will help promote better usage of the cv's (keeping them away from the airfields under attack).  As with anything, not a guarantee, but it will help.  Time to fire up the Ki-61 again :)

I'd better give credit where credit is due.  Hblair is doing the grunt work to get this set up in place Saturday, as my computer will be off-line for the weekend (moving into new house).  He came up with the idea of using the old Philippines map with the basic planeset from Fire in the Sky, as for certain political and technical reasons we had to find an alternate to the terrain and planeset we originally had planned for this weekend.  The idea of making LVT's only available to the cruiser fleets was mine, though:).

These set ups are always a team effort, as they get endlessly discussed over on the CT Team forum.  Each one is the product of the CT Team's combined neural output, not to mention the unsung efforts of the CM Terrain team and other independent terrain engineers.

Thanks again Hblair for grabbing the reins during my "logistical difficulties."

The Japanese are in desperate need of at last *ONE* torp or dive bomber.

D3A, B6N, B5N...something. Great terrains, great sim, all this promise of awesome CV stuff...but we need the a/c.

I hope in 1.09 the give them at least 1 IJN CV bomber  a/c, and from there we can build. My pick would be the D4Y or the B6N.

The Ki-67 is sorely needed too (a big salute for that), but we need a CV capable bomber as well.

Regards.
