Canadians Skaters Get Gold, Russians Furious (http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20020215/ts/olympics_figureskating_dc_11.html)
This part is laughable...
RUSSIAN FURY
Russian Olympic Committee official Rudolf Nezvegsky told Reuters Rogge had given a clear signal that competition could be determined in the courtrooms, not the sports arena.
``By doing this, they just struck a huge blow not only to the Olympic spirit of fair competition, but also to the whole nature of sport,'' he said.
-
Wow.. that was a quick decision.
Amazing that the French judge hammered the Canadians in this manner... though I'm glad something was done about it.

I don't think the USSR skaters are upset,it's the fuggin' politcal side of this that pisses off the Russians...That they can no longer bribe the jury must really infuriate them...GO CANADA!!!!!!!!!!:D
-
"Russian Olympic Committee official Rudolf Nezvegsky told Reuters Rogge had given a clear signal that competition could be determined in the courtrooms, not the sports arena."
If you cheat (Russian Judges) then court is the BEST place to sort out such problems!
-
I'm going to re-iterate:
Anything that has judges isn't a sport - it's a pageant.
-
Wether it's a pagent or not, according to the rules, our athletes earned those damn medals.
I'm glad it turned out this way.
"That they can no longer bribe the jury must really infuriate them"
Hear hear.
-
I saw some of the news conference....the Canadian Peltier was asked what would happen to his sliver medal. He very quickly shot back..."I hope we get the bronze too, so we can have a full set" :D I like these goofy Canadians.
-
but who came in second??
Two 1st seem somewhat odd ... in anything. PC sports
-
If they are going to start putting lawyers on the olympic teams. We should get that black guy that represented O.J. Not that girl, prosecutor. She is a screw up.

This has happened four other times in Olympic history. I'll look for what the other occasions were.
-
Lawyering belongs in the Olympics about as much as this ice prancing BS.
-
I am glad that they got the gold the DESERVED. I would have liked the Russains to have to remove the gold medals from around their necks and give them to the Canadians:)

Guess that includes some skiing events also... moguls, ski jumping...

I'm with the russians on this.
I mean this is Salt Lake City. It's all about big bucks and bribing officials.
Oh yeah, then there's that whole mormon thing. "The Fire Within"; "Children of Light" -- those aren't just olympic slogans, they're integral parts of Mormon theology. Jeezus!
At least Our Great Leader has had more success then any other previous world leader in trying to turn the Olympics into a national event. At the very least the IOC should force the US delegation in future Olympics to lower its flag before that of host countries.

The Parade of Flags was introduced at the IVth Olympic Games, London 1908, and King Edward VII himself was the Head of State to whom all flags were dipped in salute as the athletes marched in. That is, all flags except the flag of the USA. To the fury of King Edward, the USA shot-putter Ralph Rose refused to pay him respect by dipping the Stars & Stripes.
One reason given for this is that the flag of the United States is lowered for no mortal man. And after all, a king is merely a mortal! And that to this day, the Stars & Stripes is the only flag that is not dipped when the Head of State is saluted during the Parade of Flags.
I kinda like this tradition....yea we look arrogant, but wtf.
I wouldn't ask another country to dip its flag for our President either.

Furious is a Russkie? That bastard.
-
OK, now North Americans will get any medal in any competition if they'll ask.
If I was in place of that Canadian pair - I'll better burn in hell then get that "second" set of gold medals.
Russian NOC chairman reacted only after they "awarded" another gold to that canadians, so they'll probably stop crying. Poor bastard. He even turned off his cellular to escape Russian journalists...
It's no honour. No glory. Next time they'll not even skate, but cry and beg for medals.
Such people should be disqualified for doubting a jury's decision, and deprived of their awards.
Russian Vice Prime Minister Valentina Maviyenko stated that it is no more then "dirty racket" (gryaznaya voznya). Only a woman said what men should say.
Also, please, note that all this scandal stared when Canadian Prime-Minister visited Russia...

I guess I’m naive, I’d really hoped that this kinda crap had ended when the wall came down.
It used to be this way at every Olympic event where there where judges, (gymnastics, etc) always the controversy about biased judges.
Personally I’m pissed at this spineless French judge who says she was 'pressured' into giving low scores to the Canadians, why the hell couldn't she have drug her whiny bellybutton forward and reported the pressure before the event took place
-
Guess Russia will now actually have to perform better then the Canadians in order to win their golds.

Yeah, we sent your Prime Minister, Finance Minister, and all 10 provincial premiers to Moscow because we knew you would pull this watermelon AGAIN, and we weren't going to stand for it.
-
Im sorry Boroda, not all the world is as just, fair and uncorrupt as Russia........
BTW Wasn't it me who earlier said many of the "fancy" French are just a bunch of ex-communist wannabe Russian/Soviet lapdogs? :D

Last I heard from Sale and Pelletier, they said that they were satisfied... this before the IOC changed the awards. The outrage came from the fans and the media. Figure skating judges have always been suspected of foul play and favortism. It's the nature of the game.

Of COURSE they were satisfied. The publicity surrounding this whole affair translates into MILLIONS of dollars in endorsements for them. Getting "jobbed" out of their gold medal, and the ensuing turmoil and publicity that has followed, makes the Canadian pair the most marketable of all the Winter Olympians. Stay tuned to your TV sets- you will soon see Sale and Pelletier pushing everything from chewing gum to sanitary napkins.
I have to agree with Boroda, at least to a point. Roy Jones is now asking for a gold medal over HIS hose job in Seoul. At what point does this all end?? 20 years after the fact, at least as far as Roy Jones is concerned? Hey, all judge's decisions should be final.
Of course I'm also sympathetic (look up "sympathy" in the dictionary- it's right between "shit" and "syphlis") to the Canadian people, who havn't had a hell of a lot to cheer about this Olympics. Their hockey team sucks, so if they have a "special" ceremony for the Cannucks and play that most operetic of national anthems, "O Canada," well, I have no doubt there won't be a dry eye in Canada as their anthem is played and their flag is raised and a whole bunch of fur trappers raise their bottles of Molson in salute. It's too bad that Sale and Pelletier don't have the class to refuse this most condenscinding of gold medals. Baroda is righrt- Canadians are classless.
Why don't we turn this into the Special Olympics and give EVERYBODY a gold medal?
Elfenwolf

Hey Boroda, will you please pull your godamn head out. The judge admitted to cheating. Why the hell shouldnt the Canadian pair get the gold if they were, in fact, better than the Russians. That crap you spew is rediculous.
-
"Of COURSE they were satisfied. The publicity surrounding this whole affair translates into MILLIONS of dollars in endorsements for them. "
LOL, millions eh? We are talking about Canadian athelets right??
As for the rest...well I guess I'll have to chock it up to someone that, I don't believe, knows wtf they are talking about, but has an opinion anyway.
When it comes to class, I don't believe you are fit to judge, I'll let the other 7 billion people in the world to that, as yours is one tiny, misguided opinion amongst so very. very many others.
Have a nice day!:D
-
Remember the summer olympics in Austrailia when they set the sawhorse deal too low and ruined all those gymnists chances before the realized why they were all falling on their tulips ? That kind of bothered me that the gymnists didn't even get a redo, all they got was an oops, sorry, see you in four years .
-
personally i blame the french judge. don't think that russia is the only country that ever tried to fix a game. If the french judge would have just said "NO" this wouldnt have happend.

Hey Thrawn I've got a stock market tip for you. Buy stock in any company that makes tissue paper. The way you Canadians are crying there's bound to be a shortage soon and the price will go up.

It seems to be the Russians that are spilling tears......
Have a nice day..:D

Hmmm. Putting politics aside, and any other excuses,..I do not see how anyone could not "see" that the Canadians simply outperformed the Russian pair. Whether the Russion pair had an off day, or new program or whatever makes no difference, they were just outperformed.
If we are to let decisions stand that are obviously poor decisions with the excuse of "well, thats the way it is", then we will never be able to get it all cleaned up and judged properly.
Subjective events in any sport will always be plagued with problems with judging, but blatant obsurdities need to be corrected.
I do have some misgivings about how they corrected the problem. Frankly, I think they should have had a skate-off after it was determined the judges were not quite being fair, but that is my opinion.
Coming in here and calling a country cry-babies, or putting a political spin on the problem is not going to solve anything and is not going to remove the problem that existed in this instance.
If you beleive the Russian pair skated better than the Canadian pair, please explain why. I would really like to know as my opinion is quite the opposite.
-
"Russian Olympic Committee official Rudolf Nezvegsky told Reuters Rogge had given a clear signal that competition could be determined in the courtrooms, not the sports arena."
Are they implying that the judges judgement was judged?
-
I can't believe the Russians are pissed. Simple Olympic rules state that if there is evidence of fowl play with a judge, and there was in this case, that judges scores are thrown out, and the alternate judges scores will replace them. In this case the alternate judge scored the Canadians higher, so the gold goes to the Candians...... the Russians are lucky they got to keep their gold, and their winning streak alive. By the rules, the Russians should have got the silver.

Me Thinks Natedog knows just a little too much about this Figure Skating stuff

I didn't mention figure skating once! I was talking about OLYMPIC RULES! I'm just telling you what I heard on sports center last night.
.eject cobra :D

but you did watch the singles right NATE???
can you tell us which one isn't gay?? :)
the Ruskies should have to give up their gold
gold metal = no standing in bread line for a month

Dear Canada, We are sorry our judge sucked. In case you have declared war on us, we surrender.
-The French
-
the only part of the Olympics that I have caught was the downhill moguls with the over hyped "dinner roll" and some of the hockey the other night. not to mention all the crap on the news......
-
Hey elfenwolf. Imagine if instead of Canadians it had been americans robbed of the gold. Your media (which also publicized this event to a great extent) would have had a field day. And the crying? Sheesh. Get off your high horse.
newguy
Go Team Canada
-
I watched the competition, and was highly pissed when the Canadian pair got lower scores then the Russians. Not because they were Canadian, but because their performance was absolutely flawless. Even the crowd was booing and hissing when the scores for the Canadians were posted.
After seeing that, was anyone really surprised that all this hoopla came about?
Strip the Russians of their medals, make them also-rans.
-
If it wasnt for cheating at sporting events..what would the russians be good at.
-
Oooh... that's harsh.

Now there is a proof no ? ;)
Btw this "sport" (*) is screwed for a long long time it's not the end of this kind of scandal as it happened before and will continue to happend.
Just because the skating federation won't do anything to change the way judge work neither the way they are assigned...
Btw I cannot understand why a so flawed sport is still in the Olympic ...

Now this woundn't be the first example of French leaders colaborating with low lifes would it?
It was the head of the French Figure Skating Association that was the POS in this situation...He instructed her to vote for the USSR if she wanted to keep her job...In the aftermath of her confession, perhaps it was the only way anyone could put a stop to this type of corruption and I bet she had planned all along to "blow the whistle" if she had to compromise her integrity...Had she voted for Canada, she woulda been jobless after the olympics and nothing would have been heard of it and no changes or inquires into skating corruption. It took a lot of guts/integrity to inform the Olympic Skating Committy as she did and showed the world the class of the French people.(not including politicians or FFSA leaders)
BTW,it takes two to collaborate,I wonder what country's Figure skating head was talking with the French???..Have a good day Comrads!!!
-
Its sickening that Russians can still hold their gold medal. They should have been kicked out of the rank. Moreover, other squads performed better than them and deserve the silver/bronze medals. And what about the French judge?

But just search a bit in the past (in 2000 if I recall good) there was a proposal made by Slovenia concerning the way judgement were done in ice skating ...
It was rejected by the ISU ...
go figure ...
And yes it was rejected by the Canadian and the Italian too ...
You're starting to smell your own toejam ?
That's perfectly normal ...
This sport has been rotten for YEARS and you just discovered it last week ?
You're either blind either idiot.
I love ice skating but I hate the international(*) federation with passion.
(*) surprisely international mean there's representant from Russia,France,Poland ... and even Italia and Canada ...
-
That sport does have a lot of problems and I'm sure they exist throughout the entire sport and not just the French or Russians or low class individuals like Tanya Harding. But as someone pointed out it's hard to drop any of the most popular events. I got the biggest kick out of the biathalon, but my wife was a bit confused. Curling isn't even that bad, but then I am easy to entertain. Perhaps the time is ripe for serious reform since geopolitics has less reason to dominate the judging these days and since the $$ value of the events is so high now.
What gets me. though, is the whole Ice dancing thing. While making a deposit in the Wife's emotional bank account by watching Ice Dancing over the weekend, I realized I had no idea whether one team was really doing better than another. The french pair seemed to be the "hottest", the Canadians left me somewhat flat -- both were hyped before the event -- but I could not say, short of a major flub, why one particularly pair was better than another.
