Size has its own intristic value that does not need to be otherwise justified.

There are sheep farms in Australia bigger than Texas...

So they must be better, right?

"biggest of them all at eight million acres is Anna Creek in central South Australia"

Texas is 171,057,280 acres.

"Founded in 1853 by Captain Richard King, King Ranch sprawls across 825,000 acres of South Texas"

It may be bigger, but I bet the Texas land grows more and is worth a lot more than the Aussie dirt.

gasp! what are you saying? that our land is worthless.

gavor: is that the prime minister? its me, gavor...... gavor....well nevermind who i am, the americans say our land sucks. lets launch a tactical strike. huh? what do you mean no missiles. how bout some soldiers? no soldiers either. what do we have? sheep. we have sheep you say. right.....no, nevermind. i'm moving to texas.

back on track. we have FABULOUS land. good for sheep and cows and some wheat. unless it doesnt rain but then its good for motorbikes. i say we exchange some land and make a comparison.

ok, so i'm sitting at the bar with this guy from Texas and, (suprise, suprise) he's bragging.

he says "just to give you an idea of the size of my parents ranch, around noon one day, i fired up the bike at the house and road due north, non-stop, when the sun went down i still hadn't left my parents ranch."

i said  "ya, i had a bike like that once"

Since it is all relative, do you have a ranch the size of one of your States?  The King ranch, counting all the land, not just contigous, is close to two Rhode Islands.  Now Rhode Island is a pissant state, sure, but it is still a State.

  • Sounds like a completely defensive answer to me.  You must be from Canada.

I thought this was about Texas..not the great(very large) country of Canada. I see no foul. We need some basis for discussion. The intrisitic and inaliable value of size is a universal constant. They are to be stated. not proved. If you want to disprove a universal constant..this could get interesting.

well theres a station thats over 8 million acres, 500,000 - 750,000 acre properties are common. i'd have to check the size of tasmania and victoria BUT i know its bigger than our capital state, ACT. so we have a station that bigger than one state and maybe bigger than 2 more.

Tasmania is 68,400 square km in size. Cant be bothered converting to acres.

You've erred on so many levels with this statement.  Bigger itself implies that it can't be a constant without actually being bigger than another constant... thus you can't argue its constant.  Sheesh.

And you in no way state whether bigger is actually better or not.  This is a time tested statement: "Bigger is better"... it has been bandied around for some time now and carries validity simply by over use both in America (when talking about stupid Texans) or outside of America (when talking about stupid Texans).

Now, stick to the facts.

BTW... Australia is automatically disqualified because its inhabited by criminals.

Dude you ain't lying.  Here in Austin there's a bunch of Cali (left coast :P) transplants.  I've never seen worse driving in my life.  I thought I'd never actualy say it, but I miss Houston traffic.  Nothing like seeing 1 million plus cars all moving.  Albeit slow 30-50 mph AT LEAST IT MOVES[/i][/u]

Well, (tongue in cheek) I don't have hard evidence that these "bad drivers" are originally from CA, I can only assume, but the ones with the CA plates up here CERTAINLY are the more 'agressive' drivers on my observations. :D  Mind you, theres nothing wrong with agressive drivers if the universe revolves around you. :D

Hey! Cut it out! We are supposed to be baggin on Texas here!
I would rather be driving 75 on an interstate next to a CA driver than any other. And I've seen West Texas. I'd say it would be a pretty even swap for the Outback.

Do all Americans call Austalia 'The Outback'?

And i agree with you target, ive seen pics of Texas and it looks like a bit o Aust only with cactus and more cliffs. And men with big hats.

Do all Aussies call Texans Cowboys?

The part of Texas where I live in reminds me of Jamacia's Interior.  That is the only place where I have seen the combination of hills, vegative colors and climate(except they get 12 months of what we only get  for 9) as we have here.  From pictures, parts of Spain look similar, or what I imagine Beruit looked like 1000 years ago.

I have blue water Marlin fishing 5 hours away-pic (http://www.lizking.com/1stblue.jpg), trophy Specks, Reds and Tarpon in 3 hours, crystal clear rock bottom streams-pic (http://www.lizking.com/frio.htm) and lakes-pic (http://www.lizking.com/pacebend.jpg) ten minutes away, some of the best deer, turkey and javalina hunting-pic (http://www.lizking.com/deer.html) in the world in my backyard, and, it has the highest rate of internet connectivity in the country. Did I mention 30,000 college girls? Live music capitol of the world?  I live here because I picked it, of all the places I have been to and could have chosen, not because of an accident of birth.

May I come live with you Gadfly? Sounds like a fishing paradise. Now I really wanna visit Texas! :(

And no, ive never called a Texan anything but a Texan.

2000 pounder, baby, she is black, and she is out there.

One day when we hit the lotto, this bunch-pic (http://www.lizking.com/3sons.jpg) will grace your shores and catch her, too!

Now this is ironic, Texans making fun of how people from other states drive.  :)

Drive fast and move right for faster traffic.  Use those 2 rules, and we would all be OK.

Hrm, bring the crew and i'll teach you some tidal river fishing, complete with real crocs.
Title: Is bigger better?
Post by: Gadfly on February 20, 2002, 07:16:54 PM
Can you hook me up with a barramundi?  A big one?  Croc's don't bother me, I slept with the gators in the Atchafalya Basin(5 hours away), plenty.
Title: Is bigger better?
Post by: gavor on February 20, 2002, 07:24:21 PM
Oh good. Crocs are nothing to worry about as long as you keep your limbs in the boat. My brother-in-law, uncle or father could quite easily hook you up with a large barra. Just need rod, lures, hat, big stick and lots of patience. All that aisde, I went a few months back and caught nothing. Had a boatload of fun though.

I never claimed anything for bigger, just for size. Size is universally accepted to have its own value regardless of other considerations.
IE two objects, otherwise identical except one is larger. The supperiority of its size attribute makes it supperior to its more mass challenged brethern.
It is more admirable, more desirable, more sought after, more beautifle, more valueable.
If there was a smaller Texas, it would be inferior to the current larger and therefore supperior Texas.
