Title: Musing: what'd I'd like to see in the next version
Post by: Preon1 on February 20, 2002, 11:54:52 AM
You know, while a larger planeset is cool, here are some things I'd LOVE to see implemented in the near future...

Contrails - Money says the eye candy involved in flying and fighting in the cons would be just as shocking as the first time HT put in clouds.

Big Cumulus clouds - see above reasoning

3-D dar - in other words, a radar at a base couldn't see you if you're behind a mountain.  In order for this to work there would also have to be enemy radar stations at the top of mountains to support nearby airfields.  (more fun stuff to blow up)

NOE dar based on AGL instead of ASL - you can't fly below radar in the mountains...  that's just sad.

Anybody else have other musings aside from new planes?

Man yeah...

HT, there are a TON of unclassified wargames at the Naval War College that I'll bet you could use to model that kind of stuff.

I believe the radar floor already is AGL.

I'd like to see some smoke and shakin when the engines start....but only after ALL the useful stuff is done.

More importantly, I like to see a tower-only dot dar option for CT and Special Events.

I seriously doubt we will ever see contrails or clouds that work like clouds and differing types of clouds at differing altitudes.  We wont be seeing smoke burn from engine starts.  There wont be smoke burn as engines are firewalled and there wont be engine misfires.  There wont be radar that behaves like radar.
There wont be a sun that impairs vision like the sun does and there wont be ack that hehaves like ack, you know, firing through hills and hangers and such nonsense.  You wont be hearing any fragments hit your plane as you fly through ack fields at 20k.  You will just tool along , minding your own business thinking the dum ack isnt even working then KAPOWW!  your in the tower.  Rubbish.

You see,  HTC will build AH to the lowest common denominator that makes it most attractive to the mass market novice yet provides just enough testicle to drag the diehards along, kicking and screaming, knowing that the holy grail of MMOG flightsims almost was, but alas.........will never be.

Maybe AHv2.0 we will see some things........if and when

Onward furball pile-it, AW is dead but not forgotten

I was watching the History Channel the other day, "War in Color" I believe, and it had combat footage of some P47's strafing marshalling yards and other stuff........
What I liked and would love to see is the smoke when the guns are fired....was way too cool seeing the Jug guns hammering and smoke trails behind them.......also would be too neat to see smoke when the planes went full throttle or WEP, have read plenty stories and pilot accounts of Allied flyers knowing when their LW opponents went full power, just from the stream of smoke from their exhausts.......

Unfortunately, Popeye, HT told me himself that he will never program this in....not even for Special Events only.  :(

Its his company...cant argue with the boss.  :)

While we always need a few new planes,  I want:
1) new & improved film viewer (heh, wtg htc)
2) replace the join command with an invite command. In that way, your permission must be requested and YOU issue the invite.
3) HTC must do some serious thinking about arena size and the numbers we see in the MA today.  Mindanao wasn't designed for 400 participants.
4) Enhance the graphics. (make the ground/mountains/airfields/explosions/clouds and etc more attractive.)

All wonderful ideas, but the problem with most of them is the lag it would cause - the more "stuff" you have in an arena, the slower the gameplay.  IL2 is BEAUTIFUL, but it only supports 32 people online - AH is a beautiful online sim - supports 470.  Regardless - as long as were making a wishlist - I might as well throw my books into the fire...

1.  Contrails - I second this.
2.  Make maps bigger... please.
3.  Once 2 has been accomplished... make fuel burn realistic.
4.  Buff formations - yes Im in favor of them.
5.  Once 4 is done - decrease bomb accuracy
6.  Faster flap speeds - IMO takes a tad too long to deploy.
7.  Realistic Radar - wonderful idea that would enhance gameplay.
8.  Instead of custom plane markings - how about multipul choices for plane paint scemes? <--Good idea.
9.  More realistic "tracer smoke" - get rid of the "line"
10.  And finnally... WEATHER!  Dark clouds - rain!

I would like:

1.  A feature where the map stays at the last position you had it before you pressed escape.

2. Gas tanks where you could select from the LW and RW and middle tanks, rather than watch all 3 burn down at the same rate.

3.  If say a LW tank is hit, you stop streaming gas once that tank is empty.

4.  A Latte machine and a bathroom added to every fighter.

5.  A YAK-3, so we could get some more interesting threads going! LOL!

Film Soundtrack by John Williams!  ;)  Hey, if we are gonna make AVIs from our films, might as well make 'em in style!  :D

Bigger pipe for the special events arena.  more subscribers means more people signing up for the large scenarios.

Besides a finished planeset which we can eventually count on coming. I would like to see:

1. A few more GV's. Notice that I only said a few. I definatley think we need Sherman's and T-34's maybe even a Tiger. And we also need LANDING CRAFT!! Lvt's are nice but will not fill the roll in a D-Day invasion.

2. 3 Subs, 1 German type VII U-boat, a Japanese boat and an American boat. And some type of Destroyer preferably British or American.

3.Fire extingushers!!

Hmm have you ever tried to turn off automatic fuel management in AH? :D
Oh well....

Something very easy to implement:

To select the % of fuel per tank instead just a global 25% 50% 75% 100%, same for DTs.

To select the % ammo load per gun set.

To have a 2D hangar interface, not as cool as the 3D one but much more functional.

To get rid off the 3D map for mission edittion.

1) I'd like not to be able to run all day at 100% throttle; I've read numerous reports that pilots could see a "bouncee" suddenly firewall the throttle when the bounce was seen in time - which proves they wern't at 100% to begin with.

2) From 1; I'd like to see exhaust smoke when the throttle is firewalled.

3) I've seen lot's of footage of the "death spiral"; the plane spinning down - the engine note rising in pitch to an impossible scream until -bang! We don't have that.

4) More consequences for over speed in dives.

5) More accurate cockpits - removal of ammo counters/trim etc where it shouldn't be.

6) Player plane skins

7) editable bomb sights (if gun sights - why not bomb sights?)

8) Terrains with a few uncapturable fields - would require a rethink of what criteria wins the war -capture of nation's capital? You should always be able to fly in an MMOG flight sim.

9) A more balanced GV set, at least one allied tank (Sherman? T34?), Panzer V. Panzer is as lame as Stang V. Stang (yes; I know about the Football war)

10) Tougher buffs/weaker guns

11) More crew on multicrew vehicles - I miss "the squad buff" from AW when 8 of us could be on the same B-17 laughing our tulips off. More than 2 crew no F3?

12) More strat targets to bomb (a Hydro dam would be nice...  :) )

13) Troop gliders being towed by buffs

14) When the message comes up saying "only 75% fuel" or "ordinance disabled" and you click OK; that should be it - it's frustrating to click away like a mad man to try and get up in the air - OK should mean "I accept".

And about 99.9% of the previous posts too :)

Agree on the fuel selection idea. Agreed on the 2D hangar.

And what about Oxygen system modeling so no more endless lurking at 30+ k  ? You run outa oxygen you either go nose down to safe alt or you suffer pilot wounded style damage... ? This should have also impact on buffs IMHO. What do you think?

But how endless is endless? Four hours a 30k with oxigen bottles?

I think oxygem system should be implemented just to be a part more to damage, damaged oxygem, and u better go lower quickly.

Of course damage to Oxygen system should be possible with consequences as described by MANDOBLE... Also fuel multiplier should relate also to Oxygen consumption.

But for sure there were planes without presurized cabins etc. Which should not be able to go that high as they do now... As I said it woould be nice to have this feature but it prolly wont ever happen coz it would result in newbies screaming that their pilots are diing without reason... :) oh wel... ;)

Also bombers like lancaster flying at 30+ k are a bit off I think those crews should freeze to death up there... Also there might be problems with engine lubrication at those temperatures etc... ?  What was usual service cieling of bombers during WW2 anyway? I doubt it was higher than 25k or am I wrong?

Well by writing endless I meant the situation we have now... So anyone can take any plane and climb as high as she goes and to stay there as long as his fuel lasts and then glide home...

I think that pilots (in RL WW2) should wear oxygen mask at altitudes from 15-16k above... (not sure about those numbers and if any of you have any info on this please feel free to enrich my knowledge)??  And with Oxygen usage multiplier (working in similar way as the fuel burn rate does) you should then watch your oxygen status quite carefuly.

You should be able to activate/deactivate the system and you should have indication of the ammount of ocygen remaining (gauge). Plus there should be Oxygen system damage added into the dmg list...
