Title: Who else loves their PDA? (geeks only!)
Post by: SOB on February 21, 2002, 04:00:07 AM
OK, the main reason for this post is to show off my cool toy, but really, ain't PDAs great?  God bless America for letting me make frivilous purchases like this!

I've loved the stupid little things ever since I got my first Pilot 500.  The games, the geek value, the way they suppliment the limited memory in my head, the beaming...oh the beaming, how cool is that :)!

My most recent additions are the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Maryo Bros (original Mario Brothers) to help me trudge my way through slow days at work.

Anyone else love their palm, or am I just nuts, or do I just have too much porn loaded on mine?

Love mine as well, an iPAQ, 3600 series... eventually I'll move to the superb 3800 series with bluetooth, 16 bit color display (3600 is 12 bit), extended battery life...

Got the stowaway keyboard and PCMCIA adapter, and together with the Ericsson T39m mobile phone is the perfect replacement for a laptop when you are travelling for a couple of days and don't have the need for a CD reader.

Yep, a geek I am :)

I've got a Clie too...love it...in fact if I lost it now I would be in big trouble!!

BTW...SOB do you have the Palmasutra on there yet?  A must for every sexually active Palm Pilot user!  ;)

I've got a well worn Palm IIIxe. Couldn't do without it.

Fortunately, it's black and white and has only 8MB of RAM. This keeps me from loading it up with porn. :D

I started with a grey scale Handspring Visor Deluxe, for $99 it was a refurb from Handspring.  I figured if I hated the thing, I was only out $99 bucks.

Then I found PalmGear.Com and I love it.  I have this thing not only as your usual scheduler/addressbook, but since I go out for appointments and wait a lot, having AvantGo cache websites (Wall Street Journal and others), I can stay up to date rather than read stale old issues of "People" in the waiting rooms.

I upgraded to a Visor Prism (65,000 colors) 2 weeks ago.  Its just incredible.

Palma Sutra is a riot....the completely illustrated Karma Sutra, pictures and all.

Of course, my favorite, is while my Lancaster or Ar234 are climbing....Spy Hunter.  Root Beer Tapper is great, too.

I haven't stepped up to the Pocket PCs or the big guns yet.  These things upgrade/improve so fast, I'm kind of waiting to see what's coming next.

If you are wanting to program for your Palm/Pocket PC computer, there is a neat application to do so (does either or both).  Check http://www.appforge.com/

been thinking about buying one of these, but I want to wait till they have a bit more storage space. 8mb is not good if I also want to load it with mp3.
I also want a mature version of BlueTooth to be taken for granted on every device.

Its great tech, but I still want it to improve. Maybe in a year or two.

8 meg is the internal memory, but the Clie has sticks that go up to 128meg...so plenty of room for Mp3s....

I'll buy when the internal memory is 64mb and the memory stick is 512mb ;)

PDA's are another of those devices that you don't see any need for, but then can't figure how you did without when you finally get one.

I've been a PDA user since I got a Casio BOSS waaaaaay back when.  Had the 1st Palm Pilot, moved up to an IBM model with an aftermarket memory upgrade.  Went to a Handspring Visor Deluxe and then a color screen Handspring Prism.  I bought  a Cassiopiea M100 along the way, but Win CE just wasn't up to speed yet.  I still use the Visor Prism every day.  I've been taking  a hard look at the latest iPaq's though.  I think there's a nice color 64MB model in my future. :)

your AA batteries would wear out before you got to listen to all your music :)

My cheap Palm III xe eats batteries and its off more than its on...

I doubt more memory does much to battery life; its the music. but if you listen to it with the screen off, there should be no problem listening for hours (an mp3 player can play for 24hours with a single AA)

and by the time they come with all that memory, batteries should also have improved.

Animal, 3700 and 3800-series iPAQs have 64 Meg internal memory and you can attach the 1Gig microdrives to them with the CF adapters :)

Plenty of mp3 space, it is :)

Interesting. Do they still have that bulky add-on sleeve you gotta put for extra features?
is it USB 2.0 or FireWire?

I've had a palm iiie for about 2 1/2 years now. I think i change the batteries every month or so.

I certainly have the palmasutra, been diligently ticking items off as time goes by....

iPAQ 3630 here, and very happy with it. I use it for everything....accounts, agenda, e-mail...

I'm now tweaking with a Garmin 75 and OziCE  :)

Cheers,

Pepe

With the 3600 series you have to have the PCMCIA or CF adapter, which is kind of thick, I admit, but the 3800 series have some special slot built in (SD Memory Slot).

About connectivity: it's USB 2.0

How do you guys with CE devices like the OS?  My friend's boss has an iPaq and he hated CE so much, he removed it and was loading Linux on it.  Not sure how well that worked, but...
