Title: Is there an operable MiG-15 in Colorado?
Post by: Kratzer on February 23, 2002, 04:11:36 PM
Because I'm pretty sure I saw one fly over us when we were walking the dog around noon today up in Louisville.  I originally though it was an F-86, but then as it passed by, you could clearly see the elevators/horizontal stabilizers mounted high on the tailplane.

Anyone know about this?

Whatever it was, it made my day to have it fly over us at about 1500 - 2000ft.

Finnish "Wings" magazine had a story about russian MiG-15 or -17 flying in U.S in airshows.

Hmmm... I've heard that they have shows at the Broomfield airport sometimes, and we are just a couple miles north of there.

I have seen one in Colorado, I think it was at the Jeffco airshow in 97?  I saw an F-86 crash there as well.

There is a MiG Alley USA out in the US somewhere though I don't know which state.  They have several MiGs from MiG-15 to MiG-21.  Here's an interview with some of the guys there http://www.aafo.com/racing/news/00/migally/penney.htm

Last I knew there was a pretty red one out of Jeffco.  It made some high speed passes and faux dogfight with a Sea Fury at our "In their Honor" fly-in at the old CS airport last year. Kewler'n'shit!!

I've seen various Mig17s at airshows... they seem to be the popular thing these days.  Not too much differance in appearance to the 15... maybe that's what you saw.

I'm pretty sure Coors sponsors one... though I don't know where it is based out of.

Yeah, it very well could've been a 17.

I like the idea of it being a 15 better, though. :)

I know that there are two Mig 17's flying in the US.  I've seen them several times.  I think a liquor company (maybe Smirinof) sponsers them.

There's a two seat MiG15-UTI (might be the 17UTI) flying out of Kissimee FL that I saw once, really sweet bird.

Cavanaughs Air Museum at Addison Airport (North Dallas) has a flyable Mig15, Mig15UTI, Mig17 and a Mig21 two seater.  Not to mention the F9F, F86 and a F-104 (not sure if that one is flight worthy tho)

I've seen two of them recently.  One at the McChord AFB air show and another at the Hillsboro air show.  One did a night flight with sparkler devices on the wingtips.. guess it was quite a show.

Both had corperate sponsors.  I think one was sponsered by Red Bull.
