miss AH. can't wait to get online again and get shot down repeatedly after i get an isp and a modem.
need pci modem are there any decent ones around that are not crap winmodems?
-
I use the U.S Robotics Gaming Modem. It seems to work well. I've read that there are advantages to external modems but I can't recall what they are offhand.

Hey Fester, how's it going?
Your working on a flight rating... right?
What type? How are job prospects looking?

there's a few PCI modems out there that aren't crap winmodems. look on pricewatch for "pci hardware modem" or "pci hardware controller modem." You don't want "controller-less" modem. If it supports DOS, Win3.x or Linux, it is a hardware modem and probably good to go.
-
Hi! Salute! :)
They sell modems for like $20! :D :)
And PCI is the norm, can you believe it?!CAN YOU BELIEVE IT! NO? ME EITHER!!!! lol, :D
Good luck buddy, I hope you find a PCI common harware device like a $20 modem, on sale for like$5. That's the norm.
COME BACK SOON! HURRY! THEY WILL HAVE AGP video cards soon, buy the V5500! WTG!

If your motherboard is an older one and has an ISA slot, consider an ISA modem.
For whatever reason, they generally get lower pings then PCI modems.
With my last mobo,I got pings that were about 50 milliseconds lower across the board than the pings I got with the PCI modem.

Fester
Im using Microcom External modem and I never ever had any problems with any Microcom modem before. Can only recomend it... ;)

Hey fester
I used to use a good/cheap modem that gave me incredible ping times (90-120 ms to DHCP!!). This was 2 years ago and it was a ISA modem, i believe they come with a PCI interface now.
The modem was a "Best Data: Data/Fax". I only dropped 60$ on it at the time and im sure they are around 50$ now. Dont buy the US-robotics hype, they sell there name and are equaled buy several lesser known companies for half the cost. All in all just ensure the modem you get is data and not a crappy windodem as you noted!
(if its displayed anywhere on the modem package details you certainly want to make sure that it has a good upload speed(close to download speed), most modems fall short in this department and that creates serious ploblems/lag for online gaming)
-
Fester, go to Best Buy and get a US ROBOTICS 56k.
If it doesnt say its Winmodem on the box , get it. USR is the best modem brand there is.
Of course, you should be getting a CABLE MODEM, it costs the same as a modem + phone line. Check Time Warner or Adelphia in your area.
If all else fails, AOL has cable , they use the Time Warner lines..but heck, cable is cable, even if they got AOhell slapped on it.

This is because most ISA modems have a hardware UART (a chip that handles buffering and stuff) while most PCI modems offload this stuff onto the processor (Winmodems are the most common name for these sorts of modems.)
It's a bit of a chore to find non-Winmodem PCI modems, but they do exist. When we had to find one at the company I used to work at (it had to work with Linux) we went with the Zoom Telephonics model 2920.
Your best bet is to look for an on-board UART in the spec sheet, or, failing that, look for Linux support.
You could also get an external and avoid the problem entirely.

Heyas!
You're not missin anything other than about 400 folks to shoot at:)

On the advice of someone who will remain nameless, I bought a real expensive USR external modem. It works maybe a tiny bit better than the ISA modem that it replaced, but not $200 better. At least there are flashing lights to watch on those long climbs..... :)

Heres the modem you want... cheap quality hardware modem pci of course

BTW, I've been running a USR 56k modem for years. Very good for gaming.

THERE ARE NO MODEMS THAT WILL WORK FOR YOU!! Oh well I guess you'll just have to stay offline so I can continue to rule the skies. :D
Oh wait, I think that there is one modem that might work for you but it only works for ROOKS! he he he
-
If you're having trouble finding a non-Winmodem, get an external one and you should be in good shape. Winmodems (heck, maybe internal modems in general?) suck CPU cycles, which at the same time increases their ping times. Not a good thing for gaming.

Hurry back Pal;
Twin Engined Devils rule the skies! (and WW TKOTH) Though we still could use the help :D

External modems are the equivelant of a SCSI device.
PCI modems are the equivelant of ATA66 IDE HDDs.
ISA modems are the equivelant of ATA100 IDE HDDs (in terms of ping time and relative speed)
winmodems, any kind, are the equivelant of a 5 1/4" floppy drive.
ZooM and USR are the best, I've been using a 56K ZooM ISA for the past 2 1/2 years. Got it for free, and works great.

No, I'll bet he doesn't want one because, while it doesn't say "Winmodem," it is a Winmodem, and Fester specifically stated he did not want a Winmodem.
-
hows that a winmodem if its a hardware modem? explain please

Hmmm. Looks like my mistake. I looked at the USR page and didn't match up model numbers correctly.
-
Hey Cit... do you have an ISA slot in your PC?
-
Modem???
I think the real reason is fear....
