Hi all.
Well, it's that time again. Plans for the 3rd Annual Aces High Convention are in full swing.
Please keep in mind that we do not have a contract signed yet as negotiations are still taking place. This could be subject to change. So don't purchase those airline tickets yet! We did want to let the community know what we had in mind for this year’s convention.
In hopes that more members of our community will be able to attend, we have modified our dates from previous years. The following is what is presently in the works:
August 1st - 4th, 2002
Embassy Suites Outdoor World
2401 Bass Pro Drive
Grapevine, TX
Due to the success of the Aces High Convention last year and the fact that we weren't asked to vacate the premises prematurely ;) , we have decided to stay at the same property.
Again, the contract is not finalized so they will not be taking any reservations as of yet. When everything has been confirmed, we will announce immediately and open up registration.
We wanted to let everyone know about the schedule change and hopefully that permits more people to join us.
We look forward to another successful Aces High Convention! We'll keep you posted on the progress.
Regards,
Yankee

sweet!
so, Austin, right?
(might as well make fun of myself before the FDBs can)

Ah now... we wouldn't make fun of you wrongway... errr moose ! :p

Texas? In August?
Surely ye jest!
Too damn hot! I'm all in favor of coming down there when its freezing up here. But the last time I was in Texas in August, I was staying at this little resort called "Lackland Air Force Base" (and boy, it lacked alright!) for 6 weeks. Many days over 100 degrees and pretty much miserable.
What's the reported room rates this time around? Last years were well above what my rent is :D
Seriously, I'd probably pass on a con in August. The September/October timeline is generally when I aim my vacation time here.
-
I got you beat, LePaul. I was at Lackland in August twice! First for 6 weeks for basic, then for 90 days (July-August-Sept) for OTS. Ah, the fond memories...NOT!
Seriously, those dates work okay for me. Friday the 2nd of August falls on one of my scheduled days off, so I only have to take one day of vacation to attend :).
-
Huge difference between San Antonio in August anf the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.
One word; HUMIDITY
The humidity in San Antonio rarely falls below 80%, whereas in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area it is usually half that. Makes a big difference in the way the heat feels.
Besides, those of us that live in Texas know the old adge, "If ya dun't like the weather, wait a minute,..it'll change". :D
-
We have this invention in Grapevine, Texas called air conditioning. It really helps in the summertime. I know it may be new and scary technology to you northerners, but trust me, it's great. This is also one of the reasons our cons are held inside instead of outside. :) :p ;) :p :)
edit: don't know how to spell
-
Hell,
I have you both beat.
I lived and grew up in SAT, home of Lackland.
I spent (too many) summers in SAT. (Texas)
I know what Augusts are like in SAT. (Texas)
I remember one summer where the highs were in the 107 degree F range.
And all this without air-conditioning.
I used to get in the family car, turn on the air and just sit there.
Yes, Really.
You guys at HTC need to get your heads examined, seriously.
This is not meant in a funny manner.
On the good side, I'm not planning on being there so ....
Delta
Now liveing in Colorado.
-
August is good...the heat gets you nice and dehydrated so you can get drunk cheaper. Do they have drive-thru liquor stores in the area, or will I have to actually get out of my car to get booze? ;)

oh man this could hurt the udster. I remember what sunday was like last year (ie.HANG OVER!!!!) My Birthday is August 4!!! Last year we had the company fishing trip on my Bday we drank the night before and I had a HUGE hangover on my birthday :( looks like I'm going for the hungover birthday puke 2 years in a row :D
You rock Yankee!
-
Udie!
My birthday is August 1st! Let's get ripped!
-
Yankee - isn't Grapevine just north of Lewisville? If so, I can make it (can stay at friends in Lewisville).
But in August? Yeech. I was in Dallas/Fort Worthless mid July. It was HOT. DAMN HOT. SO HOT...well, I don't have to go into it. 115's every day. Eeeech! But I'm assuming the conference room is air conditioned? Right Yankee? Right? :D

anyone up for a Nor. Cal roadtrip?
-
I hope to make this CON.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!
NUTTZ
-
I'm there.
SunKing, I'm in Livermore. It's about 1750 miles, which is about 22 hours at 80 mph average, which is no problem to achieve on that route. Even with 2 drivers it would be tough to do 22 hours straight, so I think it would be a 2-day trip each way.
The more the merrier. Daddog, Mathman, Karnak, Mrfish etc you wanna go? With that many guys we can probably do it in one day.
Would need a big vehicle though. I have a very fast vehicle but for 2 people only. :)

Oh yea, you big city types. Got that new FM Radio stuff and you think yer king poop ;)
Sigh, well, might have to re-think my decision. But, can we drive down to Lackland and terrorize recruits? PLEASE? My combat boots have those clicky-things on the heels that strike terror in the hearts of Airmen :) :)
-
Kratzer, my birthday is May 10th, let's get bombed out of our skulls every day of the con! Wooohoooo! :)

And I think Raub has a birthday at some point too! That's one for every day!
-
crap
suddenly realized that with the con being in august and not october, I won't be 21 =(
-
And you point is what Moose?;)
-
Oh man! I hope I can make it this year. I'm gonna have to get a real job or something I guess so I can afford it :D
Im GLAD its in August though. At the 1st Con it was FREEEZING cold down there! And al I had was a light jacket, who knew?
SUPERFLY...I agree, air conditioning is great but how many of ya'll have Swamp Coolers? Very popular alternative to air conditioning but only works in dry climates like Utah :) Any humidity over 60% and the darn things are no cooler than fans. Swamp Coolers are also know as Evaporative coolers.
Does anyone want to give me some money or at least a job (self employed) so I can go to the con again? Please? Come on! I said please. ;)

I hope I can go again this year. Summer school ends right around that time of year, though I don't know what the exact dates are. I am down for a roadtrip though, particularly if it ends the week before. If not, I will fly out there again.
-
I want to see as many people at this years con as possible! I live in Ft.worth so I want to get drunk and wild with as many of yall as possible! And for you yankees being here in Aug. will give yall a nice Bright red color :)... So hope this hotel has a pool. heheheh

Hey! My birthday is in April! Let's get plastered!! WOOOHOO
-
Might just make it this year ... I need get a tan too, am turning blue here...so I don't mind about warm weather :)
-
Saw, if you manage to come all the way from Belgium, the drinks are on me :p
-
hmmm, this means I won'T have the chance to see the stars again this year.
Gotta think about that ;).
-
Texas again? Even Lake Uterus is more interesting than Texas. ;)
-
Raubie, I nearly made it back at the 1st Con, but since I've moved countries/jobs twice in the last 3 years... made it hard :(
If I manage to stack up dosh till I get there... you best prepare that keg :D
-
Texas in August.. and they say that the HTC crew doesn't have a sense of humor.
Still.... i think I will go.

-
Dream on, Funkedup!
-
Grapevine is a little South West of Lewisville, actually the hotel that it will be held at is just North of DFW airport. So close you could almost walk to it from the airport, though if your flying in from the North don't try to walk there cause you'll melt. :D

Here is a link to some pictures from the Air Warrior Con 2000 that I hosted in Indianapolis, IN during July.
http://www.327th.com/AWCON2K.htm
We had 170 AW Pilots show up + 50 spouses. They came from many states - a lot were able to DRIVE to the con as far as the east coast. We had 2 pilots from Germany, 1 From England and several from Cananda.
We had 3 rows of tables with seating on both sides for the pilots and thier PC's. We had 100+ PC's hooked up to the internet !
We had 220 at the Banquet Dinner.
We had Clarence "Bud" Anderson as out guest speaker - 16+ kills.
We had Lee Jacobs a B17 pilot and his Tail gunner BUCK as special guest.
We had Earl a P39 WWII Pilot and AW Pilot as a Special Guest.
the only thing missing was an Air show - but we were able to send a bus load of pilots to the WPAFB Museum.
We also had a Golf tournament and other side events such as Go-Cart Racing.
This was the biggest and most attended AW CON ever.
With the numbers now flying in AH there is not reason why 100, 125, 150 AH Pilots can't attend.
GOOD LUCK !
Mike "DmdJordi" Bowman
We also had a 2 hour round table discussion with ( LEft to Right )
Lee, Buck, Bob Shaw, Me ( Jordi ) , Earl, Bud Anderson
It was standing room only with 100 guys asking questions and soaking in all the grat stories !
My favorite story was Buck the B17 gunner talking about seeing a 109 some from above to below - he fired on instinct and hit a plane - not the 109 but the P51 CHASING Him through the bomber formation !
-
I'll definitely try to make this one.
August heat?
You should've beent there in July of '80. I think that's still the record.
However, most of my days were spent in air conditioned simulators.
AFAIK, the bars, hotels and cars are fully air conditioned in the DFW metroplex.
You pasty skinned AH junkies have nothing to worry about except that you may not get enough sun. ;)
-
alright, I couldn't resist.
Bass Pro Drive... only in the south ! hehe
oh the Con. .yeah.. guess I'll have to attend.

You ain't seen nothing until you go into the bass pro shop :)
They have...
1. BAR W/ LOTS OF ALCOHOL :D
2. Gun shop :D
3. BAR W/ LOTS OF ALCOHOL :D
4. Gun Shooting Range :D
did I mention the bar?

I'll be there again. Early August in Minnesota can be just as hot & humid as it is in Northen Texas, so no problem for me. Ghosth is going to drive down from Fargo, then we're on our way to the con.
The con is guaranteed the most fun you'll have in Aces High. No whining and no cranky BBS posters to ruin the fun.
That Hotel is awesome. The rooms are huge, and the rates are excellent if you have roommates to help offset the cost. There is also some huge freeking computer warehouse somewhere in Dallas that MarkAT brought me to last year. It's the perfect shopping place to upgrade your computer. I'm sure one of the locals would take you there.
Thanks for putting the con in August, now maybe I won't have a cold this year like I did at last year's con! :)
Start saving now, guys. It's worth every penny, and if you drive it's not as expensive, depending where you live. I spent about $600 total, including the con registration fee, driving expenses and buying beer for Verm(he's such a lush!! :D). But then again I had my own hotel room, so I could've gotten by for much cheaper if I would've had some roomies. I would say have $300 stocked away for the con, not including airfare or gas if you drive.
-
eeee
con is only like 6 months away!
!!
-
I was planning to attend the CON this year. While I like you moving it up beginning of August is a little rough for me. So I will have my fingers crossed that you guys run it instead after August 17 .. late August or August / September instead.
But if I have too I guess I will start moving things around to try to make it whenever you have it.
-
I'll try to make it again. I'm not sure if I will be able too. I've been hit hard the the economic downturn.
If I am able to amke it I'd be up for the road trip.
I have a Toyota pickup. It can technically seat 6, but that would be asking an awful lot of tolerance. 4 is more realistic and even then the back seats aren't for anybody over 6ft.
-
June, July, August, September... there is difference from day to day. Its hot, hot, hot! If you don't stay inside your going to melt so moving the date a couple of weeks will make no sense as far as the temperature is concerned. Three things I recomend you bring... sunglasses, sun block(SPF45 for you pastey white northern'rs) and proof of medical insurance incase you die walking from the car to the hotel.
:D :D

I think the con was bumped up so that Yankee could get her morning hugs alittle earlier this time.:D
Planning on being there, come hell or hot air...:)
-
Yankee could get her morning hugs
Is this a euphemism?
-
Karnak I looked into renting a van that would seat 4 or 5 with enough room for all the computers. Something like $60-$75 per person rental cost for the whole trip.
-
Colorado Express, leaving track nine! It's amazing how much you can pack in the back of a Chevy Suburban:). I suspect Jarbo and I'll be there again. We got room for at least two more, I suspect, so we'll have to kidnap a couple other Buccanneers to defray the costs of the drive. Eskimo, you'll have to catch a ride with someone else, this time; you're a bit farther out of the way this year;).
-
Hmm...
Jarbo, Eskimo, Sabre have to be banned from knocking on everyones door at 4:00am to fly their Night Mission. Though signing my name up for it, and giving them Yankee's room number to beat on was quite entertaining.
Drex
-
I second that Drex! ;)
Although, I did manage to change the room number prior to "the mission". Trust me, it was best for all involved. (especially you!)
:D

Are you going to be there to give me defeat from the jaws of victory yet again? :D
Now's the time when I start looking at those 2 names on the face of my monitor :) YOU WILL GO DOWN YOU WILL GO DOWN!!!!!!!
:D

Hehehe
I barely remember that midnight mission
All I can think about is passing out on my keyboard while on autoclimb and Drex waking me up
I still havent devolped the picture I snagged with Drex! I'll have to do it tomorrow

Funkedup count me in ! Lets organize this, thats something I could afford.
-
Yup if Sabre has another "scramble" mission this year, I vote he gets his very own "blanket party" :p
Hehe when he asked if I wanted too fly it, I think my reply was.... ARE YOU NUTS!!! ;)
-
FunkedUp,
I might be up for it. I really can't say right now. My employment situation is sketchy. I'm sorta, kinda temporarily working at a hell job to keep from being forclosed on.
I really, really, REALLY WANT A REAL JOB!!!
I'll know more about my situation as the thing approaches.
For now consider me a tentative "yes" that may be forced to withdraw.
-
I would love to attend the con this year. As I am retired, it doesnt matter much to me when it is. In the summer, I rent a piece of vacant land to a guy who lives in an old camouflaged school bus for big bucks - so I can prolly afford it :)

Hell Moose and Mathman and I were still awake when the call went out for the "midnight mission." I still cant figure out why the midnight mission was scheduled for 4 am, but what the hell. :)

ya know, this is cutting in on my lake time....but i'll try and pull my self away.....geeeez :D

hey bonden
if you do end up going, would you want to get tickets together?
flying all over creation is a lonely trip. even moreso when you have to go to some backwater hole named austin 1st
-
Tsk, can't do it again :). Rather unremarkable, that, but we'll see what happens in 2003 or 2004 ;).
-
I am probably going to this years CON. My company will be pretty busy in August so Flying would be my perfect choice. I would like to bring my computer, and do not trust the airlines to ship this. My other option is Driving. I have a custom Van that is pretty comfortable, bed,Vcr,color Tv, Dual A/C. If anyone is In the Philly area and may want to share gas and driving time, E-mail me.
