I spoke with the insurance company today. They confirmed that my 2001 Acura Integra (http://www.dbstaines.com/2001_acura.htm) was officially totalled.
I had spoken with the claims adjuster a week before and she explained how they compensate for vehicles. Basically, blue-book value doesn't mean squat. They go by fair market value for your area. They scour the classifieds for similar cars and work up a value based on that.
I'd been doing some of this myself and didn't see a comperable car going for less than $20,000 (2001 with 6k miles). The thing is, I'd only paid $16,999 for the car. I did all my research to get ready for a huge battle if they wanted to try to low-ball me on the value.
The conversation:
Claims: "Did you really pay $16,999 for that car?"
Me: "Yes.. I got a good deal"
Claims: "well, we've calculated everything up. Your settlement comes to $20,750"
Me: "WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!"
Its absolutely the first car I've ever made money off. I'm totally amazed at this whole ordeal. The theft has left me amazed (alarm on parked next to my bedroom window.. 3 dogs nearby) and now the speed and honesty of the insurance company has left me amazed.
I take back all those bad things I've said about insurance companies in the past. Now the only thing that will be applicable is the bad things I say about them in the future.

LOL Pyro!
I can't help but wonder if everyone would see it that way. It just worked out too well for me.
Hell... I'm even suspicious.
The insurance company did investigate me. I was somewhat suprised when she quoted me on how much I paid for the car. I'm sure they also checked out my property a tad bit. To be honest, I can't really blame them.
I'm just going to sit back and enjoy this one time that a bad thing actually worked out for me.
Can you say 2.2 GHz N4? :D

I forgot to mention that the police may be on to you. Its nothing definitive... just that they've narrowed the suspect list down to Puerto Rican transvestites.

Ok, who is that insurance company? Mine has treated me similarly in the past with a stolen bike (long story, but I made a profit on it) maybe the same? State Farm?

Your dogs are working for me.
One wrong move by the police, and you will be eaten.
Good that you got the extra dough though. Spend some on a Geforce4

My dogs haven't worked a day in their life. Despite what they might have told you.. I seriously doubt they are about to begin now.
And I do plan on getting a GF4 and a 2.2 GHz P4:D

That's called "True Market Value" at Edmunds.com, and when you enter your zip code in, it takes your location into consideration. For instance, the day I bought my car, its true market value was higher than the MSRP by about $200 !! First time I've ever bought a car that was worth more then what I paid for it under TMV.

Get an Athlon :D
...oh I forgot, that would be treason.

Wait till your premiums are up for renewal...Then remember how much you thought you were going to get screwed by them..Then remember your relief at the settlement......Then remember to deposit an extra $300 per/month into your bank account for insurance direct debt.
I can not help but think you have not dealt with an insurance company before...:(

Don't think so Rip. Edmunds had the car for about $16,500. The claims adjuster specifically mentioned reviewing local publications for local market pricings.
And SirLoin... I've been dealing with insurance agencies for 20 years now. I'm not a spring chicken. Fortunately, I don't have any claims against my account. Things tend to be cumulative. If I try to file for a second stolen vehicle claim... they'll outright drop me. If I try to file an uninsured motorist claim, they'll most likely drop me. They aren't going to send my rates through the roof though.
They're still way ahead on me.

I wrecked a motorcycle once, made $200 on it after it was totaled. Amazing luck, good purchasing price necessary.

Akdeja and you actually told the insurance company that you got the car for less than the street price? Are you on crack? Lol.
I'd tell them that the car was stolen with the crown jewels and a brand new hometheater system inside it :p

No.. I didn't tell them how much the car cost me. They KNEW how much I'd paid for it. One thing I've always found to be true... during an investigation where you are innocent... its best not to cloud the issue by lying.

Yeah I know they demand receipts Akdeja..
Just the idea of telling them 'yeah I really got it for that cheap' sounds like shooting yourself to the leg :)
You got lucky, usually the insurance companies find all loopholes not to pay you.
-
Don't think so MrSid...
It does not matter what you paid for a car. That is completely irrelevant. If you have your car stolen, I guarantee it will be clearly explained to you by the insurance company. Sometimes that works in your favor... most of the time it doesn't.

Is it gonna cost ya what the gave you, or the 16k again?
