Recently over here in the UK there's been an ISP revolution where most have gone 'free' with no per-minute charges - but generally are worse with connects and so on (ho hum) Aanyway, 'I' decided to sign up with British Telecom Internet (A name I second only to AOL) since I really don't want any more phone bills worth the same as my computer (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) so, anyway, I needed to choose a new email prefix (something@btinternet.com). Here's roughly how the conversation with my computer went.
(Mutter) Comic Sans MS font.. never a good sign. (Types) D-U-M-A ENTER
...long pause...
(Mutter mutter)
Computer: That email address is not available.
WHAT?! (Thinks) d-u-m-a (mutter)whoopeeitwork... ENTER
(Excruciatingly long pause)
Computer: That email address is not available, idiot!
Grrrr... (Very hard think) d-u-m-a (Hard pause, looking for something witty, but that makes a statement about my intelligence and maturity)-u-k ENTER
(Eons pass)
Computer: That email address is not available.
(much cussing later) HOW MANY BLOODY PEOPLE NAME THEMSELVES AFTER THE RUSSIAN PARLIAMENT?!
And then suddenly it hit me, since I was getting so uptight about a blinking email address (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) and since half my online time is spent there anyway, my new email address is

nice email address. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
I recently changed from a slip net dial up account to a pacbell ADSL account. My old email address was karnak@slip.net, when I put in karnak@pacbell.net it stated that the address wasn't available. How many people name themselves after an ancient Egyptian temple? I had to settle on the standard, boring first initallastname@pacbell.net, so now its aahola@pacbell.net. My roommate, who shares this account, couldn't get any combo of his name to work.

Good luck with BT, I found it terrible for online gaming. Appaling lag and frequent stalls. I gave up EAW online whilst I was with BT.
I am one of the lucky few with NTL now, and I have to say it is superb. It's also got the best news server I've ever seen. Virtually no missing parts in binaries newsgroups (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
Luckily I'm in Swansea where the NTL call centre is, so I was able to persuade a friend to get me an account. Once they start letting all the customers online I expect the service to go downhill fast (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

Hi Duma
I still use BTinternet quite a lot (I used Clara FreeCall, but it cost a fortune) and I haven't had any major problems and my connect is always pretty good. This is the £9-99 2 hours at a time free off peak to midnight thingy. I also use Red Hot Ant which costs £30 one off sign-up and about £20 a year. BUT Red Hot Ant can take ages to connect so I often use BT till midnight then swap over to RHA. Unfortunately I've had a few discoes because of RHA... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)
Anyone recommend anyother free dialup ISPs (standard Modem etc.)?
