Post by: Udie at Work on March 01, 2002, 02:28:17 PM
I just wanted to once again thank our great friends across the "pond" for the roll in the war on terrorism.  Truthfuly I need to thank all of NATO and even Russia, so a big fat S! to all of you for your support in this war.

S! To Great Britain for leading the peace keeping force in Afganastan (Americans really hate that duty)

Hmm try not to forget the French, Aussies, Italians, Spanish, and the Japanese either. They all have had naval vessels in the region.

Yeah, there's a  Swedish intel platoon working under the Brits till about the end of April.

As of 23 January:

"The British currently have nearly 1,000 troops in Kabul with the ISAF. There are also 129 Italians, 359 French, 241 German, 34 Dutch, 15 Finnish, 15 Norwegian, 11 Danish, five Swedish, and four Austrian troops deployed so far. Turkey, due to send some 250 troops soon -- is the only Muslim nation currently playing an active part."

The Swedes have committed only FIVE TROOPS to Afghanistan??? What did they do, drive over in a Saab??? Hey Sweden, I hate to say this, but 5 guys in a Saab is hardly a commitment to the War on Terrorism. And 359 French troops there??? Somebody stop them, please, before they surrender to the Taliban and compromise our mission.
And tell those four Austrian dudes that their bicycles won't work well on the rubble that was once Kabul, Try to hold back the 241 German troops because we've already seen how they can kick bellybutton and we're committed to a "controlled" War on Terrorism, tell the 34 Dutch drug pushers I don't smoke dope, tell the 15 Finns to take my bags to room 201 and ask the 11 Danish waiters to make sure my sardine sandwich is on dark rye.
Oh, I forgot the 129 Italians stumbling around Afghanistan. Good, because if they aren't alreay lost then they soon will be. And the 250 Turkish Boy Scouts? Thank God you showed up in time to spare me having to eat ONE MORE sandwichof Sardines on Dark Rye. Give me five boxes of your Thin Mints.

Oh sheeesh, I forgot about the 750 Canadians in Kabul. Obviously they missed a connection to Salt Lake City and instead of seeing the Gold Medal Hockey Finals they were subjected to a spectacle of us using Smart Bombs against tall Afghanistan farmers.
LOL "international effort?" Give me a break. Like ALL"international policing efforts" the brunt of the burden is placed upon the good old US of A. Give me a break, we are the ones who shed the blood. All you guys do is collect t-shirts.

Hmm,

You have almost the whole active & experienced core of Battalion 2 or our Princess Patricia light infantry. For canada that is the equivilant of the US sending the entirety of the 10 mountain's veterans into a conflict. ie: a serious amount of commitment.

Plus IIRC we sent more over, bringing the number up over 800 now. As well we have our JTF2 troops working with your special forces for some time now. Though a small number compared to the US armed forces I point out it means we committed ALL our trained and equipped special forces we had. And unlike other countries JTF2 is working right beside your own Sops guys in the thick of the toejam.

I also point out we are over-committed now to the Balkans as well. We (the CAF) are pulling our diddlying _RESERVES_ into active peace-keeping duty to keep a proper rotation there. The nastiest most violent peace keeping area and we have reservist artillery companies serving. To be honest I am just dreading the first body bag coming back.

And all without any request for notice or complaints. US needed out we filled the gap. As a result of the lack of transport (we needed US planes to get our equipment to Afghan) we are also upgrading our hercules fleet and looking into Jumbo upgrades so the US isn't burdened by us next time.

In all fairness if it was my call I would say the US can keep the whoopee tee shirts and we stick to what we are more capable of instead of trying so hard to help.

Hrm..no, its not 5 guys. Its 35 guys.
Perhaps not much, but those 35 are the best we have. They are trained by the Brit SAS, and they have roughly the same mission profiles and capabilities as them. It sounds wrong to call them the Swedish SAS, but they are our very best, our special forces if you will.

Anyway, I'm glad to see its appreciated though...Next time we'll make sure to send numbers instead of competence. Would that be a more proper commitment to the war on terrorism?

Add 450 spanish troops from the mountaineer's brigade to that contingent.

A lot of different professionals at work in Afganistan.  I hope their training methods are proofed and losses minimal.  Salute to all.

All kidding aside it's commendable so many people of the world resognize the necessity of fighting terrorists. Udie, sorry for my flame attempt, and Hort, to you and Sweden. And Saabs kisk ass.
Just think....maybe some day we'll be able to settle international disputes through negotiation rather than wars...nah, never happen.

Actually, between periods, on the CBC they had shots of our guys in Kandalar watching the game, cheering like crazy whenever Canada got a goal...which was quite often.:D

Elfenwolf you are wrong, SAAB sucks, but VOLVO is a true masterpiece!

Regardless of the numbers sweden has sent out, more important is that Sweden is actually doing something concrete. Big to Sweden!
Totally different is Finland. Arguing on what position we should take and the best we have so far is very carefully shaped announcement like "mmhhh yes we kind of almost agree atleast more agree than disagree or that is how most of us see.. blah blah..".
I am very disappointed Finland's reactions/actions (is there any?) of all this. Finland's lion in my a*s, kitten would suit better!

Actaully Australia has SAS troops in Afghanistan. They've been conducting combat missions for some time and they are based with the US marines.
