hi all
i've added the Spitfire sounds, based on the P-51 sound, as they've used the same engine. i've tried to change the Spitfire sound a bit "smoother", you hear the difference specially from ouside when you turn up fully your external sound in AH.
i hope you gonna like it .. and inputs and constructive christics are allway welcome

some time ago i got fascinated by making engine sound files. I thought it was easy, but it came out as a hell of a try and listen procedure with a lot of headache.
this p-15 sound's and others, engine and enginestart, are made from a original sound file and i've tried to make them as close to the source file as i could. my teamates liked it so i thought that it would be good to share them with you as well. try them and listen them as well from inside cockpit as well as from the tower on a flyby. ... if you like them.
i hope you like them. working on Spitfire, Corsair and Lanc actually.

i downloaded them all and that worked fine for me. i must say, that i had mitsus dound pack installed so i needed simply to replace the files.
thanks for feedback and sorry that i posted them in here ... the sound section is badly visited actually.

P-51 and Spit IX have almost identical engines, should sound the same.

But they both had diffrent intake and exhaust plumbing. Which is why they didn't sound quite alike.

the engines where the same, more less, but somehow the sound was different. i was on duxford warbirds airhow and as far i can say, the P-51 sound was more deeper and had some screaming touch ... and the spit sounded a bit different, more soft. maybe even the propellers made the sound beeing different .. i dont know.
would appreciate to know more about the differences in between the boths engines used.
above you find a link which gives you a 4 minutes mp3 file ( about 4 megs ) ... but it's very good ... with the sound of "Merlins and Griffons". Compare with the P-51 and you gonna hear some difference. I'm working on that Spit sound .. will take some more days.

the P-51 had a better aerodynamical profile ... thats was the advantage i bet.

MUCH cleaner/more advanced airframe aerodynamically on the P51, weight differances, induction and exhaust systems.....among probably hundreds of reasons.
But in short, body, or airframe design differances about sums it up.
Ten times faster is a bit of an exageration though :)

BTW P51 only had six machine guns, not eight....or was there an 8 gun version? (6x .50 cal mgs aint exactly a weapons package to be sneared at though)

Likely had to do with the P-51's laminar flow wing, which was a newer design than the Spit's. The laminar flow wing resulted in less induced drag. This reduction in drag was also partly responsible for the P-51's very long range compared to the Spit.
There may also have been less overall parasite drag due to a cleaner cross section on the Mustang, but I'm not entirely sure about that.

I was just surprised. I've seen them (not side by side exactly) and I remember the P51 being a much bigger plane. I guess the wing desing and the speed boost would account for the poor(er) perfomance in the turning catagory.

To fully appreciate the effect of the P-51s aerodynamics:
P-51 is about a 10000 lb fighter with a full fuel load and gun ammo, no external ordnace.
Spitfire is about a 7000 lb fighter with a full fuel load and gun ammo, no external ordnance.
For any given timeframe, the Merlins in the Spitfires had an equal or better rating than the license built versions in the P-51.
So with 70% of the Spitfire's power to weight ratio, the P-51 still managed higher top speeds.
The shape of the Spitfire's wings is almost as close to the ideal as possible from an overhead plan view, particularly for lift distribution/minimal drag while pulling high g-loads: critical for low stall speeds and high turn performance. However, the profile shape used was certainly less than optimal as one approaches transonic speeds.
The Mustang's wing was optimized for low drag more than high lift. Such low drag that even being slightly underpowered compared to comparable fighters, it still had good all around performance and of course outstanding speed.
The range of the Mustang comes from low drag combined with a large fuel load (what do you think was a good part of its extra 3,000 lbs of weight :)). The Spitfire barely carried any fuel at all compared to any US fighter at the time.
