I was wondering how you did the riveted metal look on the events page.

I can't find a tutorial for doing that effect anywhere!

Any books you have you would suggest?

it's all about the "pixel"

you might try searching "pixel art" , this will give you an understanding of how pixels react visually with a monitor, screen resolutions and the human eye.  http://www.k10k.net is a good example of pixel art.
