Where can one find a FREE site that will somewhat TRAIN a person to make 3D models? and a different site that might help one make skins (kinda like Counter-Strike) for different things? I have always wanted to try (hint word is TRY hehe) to do this type of stuff but i never have found a site that HELPS some one do it...
thnx

Try
http://www.3dcafe.com
http://www.polycount.com
for starters. Got more if you want'em.
If you're just starting out, I'd recomend Milkshape in combination with LithUnwrap.

http://www.geocities.com/lithunwrap/
Pretty darn good for the cost.

Also, one of the best books I've seen on low poly modelling like in games as opposed to the high poly stuff for animations:
"Game Modeling using Low Polygon Techniques"
ISBN: 1-58450-055-7
If yer a dweeb like me, its an excellent starter.

Go to http://www.discreet.com and download gmax. There are tutorials you can download for it.

If you are interested in half-life stuff, there is a great shareware program called 'Milkshape 3d' which you can try out for a month, and then is $20 or $30 - pretty reasonable - which will let you make models for the HL engine.
There are a TON of tutorials out there for the program which not only show you the program, but give you a good footing in doing 3d models in general.
I'll post more info when I get to work in a few...

Alias|Wavefront has a free version of Maya you can get. Its suppose to be fully functional, except it will put watermarks on your rendered frames.
Theres a lot of tutorials, books and videos for Maya out there.
http://www.highend3d.com is a good place to start looking for tutorials and such.
You can sign up for maya at http://www.aliaswavefront.com.

Here's what I was able to accomplish with Milkshape 3d back when Raub and I were kicking around the concept of a Civil War mod for Operation Flashpoint... these were my first two attempts at 3d modeling.
The Enfield '3-band' rifle musket:

And the LeMat revolver:

It is pretty easy to work with.

The problem with GMax is it won't save out to any format other than GMax.
If the game you're working on supports GMax thats fine. Otherwise its not much use.
Unless something has changed since I first looked at it.

Superfly, I read in some thread somewhere that Gmax is a dead end unless you pay for the very pricey kit to get the file converter into useful formats?
One I've been playing with lately that seems decent
