Hit-and-Run Victim Lived 2 Days Stuck in Windshield
By AP Staff
FORT WORTH, Texas -- A victim of a hit-and-run lived at least two days trapped in the windshield of the car that struck him, authorities said.
Police told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in Thursday's editions that the driver ignored Gregory Glenn Biggs' pleas for help and the victim later died.
"I'm going to have to come up with a new word. Indifferent isn't enough. Cruel isn't enough to say," Richard Alpert, a Tarrant County assistant district attorney, told the newspaper. "Heartless? Inhumane? Maybe we've just redefined inhumanity here."
Police on Wednesday arrested Chante Mallard, a 25-year-old nurse's aide, on a murder warrant in Biggs' October death.
When Biggs' body was found in Fort Worth's Cobb Park, evidence pointed to a hit-and-run, investigators said. The newspaper said investigators based their case on her confession about four months later.
"If he had gotten medical attention, he probably would have survived," said traffic investigation Sgt. John Fahrenthold.
Mallard told police she had been drinking and using ecstasy the night she struck the man. The impact hurled him headfirst through the windshield, leaving his broken legs protruding onto the hood.
With the man still lodged in the windshield, the woman panicked and drove a few miles to her Fort Worth home, parked her car in the garage and lowered the door as Biggs, 37, began to plead for help, according to a police statement.
Investigators told the newspaper that Biggs received no aid for the next two or three days and remained lodged in the windshield, bleeding and slowly going into shock. Mallard told police she periodically went into the garage, apologizing to him but doing nothing about his cries for help.
After the Biggs died, police quoted the woman as saying several of the her acquaintances helped remove his body, put it into the trunk of another vehicle and drove to the park, where the body was dumped. The body was found Oct. 27.
Mallard's attorney, Mike Heiskell, said the accusation against her was unwarranted.
"I think this is overreaching on the part of the prosecution and the police and, in the end, I believe the law will shake out that this was simply a case of failure to stop and render aid," he said.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office told police that Biggs suffered no internal injuries and apparently died from loss of blood and shock. Medical examiner's records listed Biggs' address as a homeless shelter in Fort Worth. His mother, Meredith Biggs, said she had recently begun looking for him.
Police last month were tipped that the suspect may have been in a hit-and-run collision, said Fahrenthold. Mallard had told a friend details when she was questioned why she was no longer driving her car.
A search warrant of Mallard's house produced the damaged car with blood, hair and other evidence, authorities said.

Hard to find words to describe the disbelief. Thankfully Texas has the death penalty as an option.
-
Oh great. Now the bleeding hearts will be all over this one, wringing their hands and crying over some homeless dude. Look, I would do the same damn thing if I were drunk and stoned on Estacy. Do you know what hitting a pedestrian will do to your insurance rates? Anyway she said she was sorry. Hell, I would have clubbed the piece of trash to shut him up after listening to about an hour's worth of him moaning in my garage. She put up with that stinkin whiner for 2 DAYS.
As a taxpayer I'm GLAD she did the right thing and didn't take him to the hospital for free medical care. Why should all of us have to pay for his medical treatment? The dude was probably jaywalking anyway so it serves him right.
Have you ever smelled a homeless person? They stink. I left my car unlocked one time and some damn wino crawled on my back seat and took a nap. I didn't notice him at first so I hopped in my car and started driving when my nostrils were assulted by that smelly piece of flatulent garbage. I didn't know what it was until the wino had a phlem spitting coughing fit, and it startled me so bad I nearly had a wreck. I stopped and drug that sucker out right there on the middle of the freeway, and even though it was snowing a blizzard I had to drive with my windows down. That car stnk for months, so my sympathies are with Chante Mallard- she will NEVER get the smell out of her car.

Ah... seeing a definate pattern to elf's posts. Gonna explore the squelch feature.

Man, that lady is cold as steel.
That one of the most cold blooded murders I have heard of.
-
That's one sick sense of humor, ElfenWolf.
You're a gem.

I take it for sarcasm, but am not 100 % sure.. :)
As for the article, by god, how low can people go ?
I wonder what her motivation was ?
Avoid financial responsibility ?

For some crimes, I think the ancient practice of public crusifixions are in order.

Let me ask you guys something..does it REALLLLLY move you? I mean...are you going to getup 5mins from now and give a rats ass? Sometimes all the false sympathy I see people display is sickening.
xBAT

Depends on what you mean.
If you mean "I'm booking airline tickets right now to fly from Sweden to Texas and I'm gonna hunt that lady down and kill her" ...then no
My gut reaction was more along with what I felt after those two british kids killed that 2 yr old a couple of years ago if you remember.
Kinda hard to describe...Some sort of cold rage mixed with hate and a "get them and torture them to death" -feeling.
The feeling resembles the feeling from 9-11 watching those people jump from WTC. But that one was stronger.
-
No movement at all... I'll admit it.
-
Not trying to be some sort of monster but heck...most the crap I see on the news is bad and it simply doesnt deeply move me. There are events that do 911, seeing childrean hurt etc... but most stuff... nope. If I didnt KNOW them its hard for ME to feel anything real...
xBAT
-
I you could read that and not be moved by it, then you are the one who is sickening.
Wab

Now Wab... if your name was Mallard or Biggs, then it would trouble me. :)

SO wabbit your telling me that your going to be remorse about this for awhile. Your going to lose sleep and bascily your life is going to be turned into a living hell? Thats real grief. Not this hollywood BS I hear so many people put out there to seem like they care.
I'm calling it like it is.... a horriable event that isnt going to make me lose any sleep over and odds are I wont even remember it in say a month or so.

What's the record for "most squelched?"
-
Batdog... I fail to see the relevance of your argument.
You took the time to post "Why do you care?"... basically... you care that someone cares about something that you don't care about. Its really quite ironic.
The incident itself is horrific. Leaving someone to die in your garage is horrific. Being a member of the medical community and doing this is horrific. If I had a say... this lady would receive the death penalty for her actions.
But I don't. So I read the thread, comment on it, and move on. I'll remember it in a month... I guarantee you that.
I'll also remember that someone thought it was silly that people would comment on it... then decided to comment on the silliness of their comments... taking it to exponential silliness.

Neg Bat...shortly after my initial reaction I was joking about it. But then I'm a bastard...you shoulda heard what I had to say about the Columbine kids after hearing about it from everyone on and on, over and over at home and at work for two weeks. I thought one of my co-workers was going to cry for me!

How sad....I don't mean in a "Hollywood" sort of way, but really sad that people can read about this level of inhumanity and shrug it off like it was nothing.
When I first read this I was almost certain that it was a Satirewire or Onion post. But this is sick. She had a man crying for help and she just apologized and left him. Then she apologized some more. Sociopathic comes to mind.
Yes xbat this does have an affect on me. Will I lose sleep? Probably not, but I will share this story with friends. Maybe the overall consciousness of our Country will be raised a smigin starting with my little circle of friends. Maybe the acceptance of drug use will drop a little more. Maybe its enough just to care and feel for the poor slob.
Not caring about things like this is not an option for a civilized society.....think about that.
-
Batdogshit,
I'm only sorry it wasn't you, or a close member of your immediate family locked in a garage, stuck through a car windshield, dying a slow, agonizing death. In THAT case you'd be right. I prolly wouldn't give a toejam.

I hear ya bat, and it made me feel vaguely uncomfortable for a few minutes. I imagine I'll think about it abit on and off for then next few days. That's about it.
I guess I'm just not that surprised. I mean OH MY GOD...you mean humans can be completely immora????
Stuff like this happens every single day. You're all pretty smart guys, you know this. I'm not happy about it, but thounds of people die in horrible cercumstances every day, I don't wring my hands and get upset about it. It's not a matter of scale though, it just doesn't affect me...literally.

Yes, yes it would. The circumstances would be different. I think that's the point he's trying to make. This month aprox. 10,000 people will die of starvation in Africa, do you care?

For God's sakes, you guys! We're talking about a HOMELESS person here! Sorry, but I have zero sympathy for homeless jaywalkers and I've been tempted to run over a few of them myself.
I got into an altercation several months ago with some derelect who tried to grab my 12 pack of Budweiser in the 7-11 parking lot and made me drop it, bursting several cans. Worse than that the sucker scratched my hand and now I have to get a blood test once a month for HIV. And the REAL kicker is that even though this guy has a criminal record I am not allowed access to his personal medical information under Right to Privacy laws! PLUS I got cited for kicking him in the balls for scratching my hand and wrecking my 12 pack, and all I was trying to do was subdue him until the police arrived so they could check this a-hole for AIDS. That one is still pending, BTW, but I've been charged with assault, although my attorney tells me the DA will drop all charges due to the "inability" of the "victim" to coherently recall the event. Now THAT makes me feel good about the scratch on my hand, huh?
Bottom line? We, a working stiff, limited to only drink 9 beers that evening instead of my customary 12, staring at a severely scratched hand wondering what kind of diseases I've just come in contact with, facing criminal charges, my wife refusing to have sex with me until I am cleared medically (although I really can't blame her. I'm too scared to even mastrubate without a condom)...and the Homeless Dude...kicking back in a hospital bed, TV remote in hand, watching some dumb-ass Fox TV "reality show" like "Survivor"as he presses the Morphene Drip button mainlining pure watermelon that he could never EVER afford on the streets at TAXPAYER expense- where in the hell is the justice in that?
You leftist bleeding hearts like AK Deja Vu, Ripsnort and AK Wabbit who are all crying about the plight of some worthless piece of human garbage are what is wrong with our Country. We need to rid ourselves of the plague of homeless in America. We should load them up on transports and send THEM to Afghanistan to fight. Why in the Hell are we sending the very best we have to fight? Send the Homeless- and if we lose, who cares?
I am sorry Ripsnort, AK DejaVu and AK Wabbit, but I must squelch you. Your constant leftist viewpoint concerning putting Homeless People in Government-Paid Homeless Shelters in MY neighborhood is simply too much, even for my centerist opinion. You three are the biggest bleeding-heart liberals I have ever seen and, frankly, I am confident I speak for many here when I state that your Pinko-Communist viewpoint is not welcome on these Boards.
-
Elfenwolf, is your lawyer name, Leonard "J." Crabs, by any chance?
Fantasic stuff by the way.
-
Well, I'm shocked and disgusted that anyone would do something so horrible, but... I'll get on with my life, just as soon as I'm done typing this post. I hope that the woman gets locked up for life. This should never happen again. That will be all.

We are very sorry for your pain Elfen and will consider you in our thoughts and prayers.
P.S. Your satire, at least I believe it may be satire, is brillant. Remember the Georgia Crematory incident when you gave a counterpoint that we all have occassionally let our inbox get a little too full. For me now, that is sadistically humorous. At the same time I feel sympathy for the familes. It creates a most interesting paradox.
Does anyone remember that antimated link "Who Let the Dogs Out?" That was somewhat humorous and at the same time I felt ashamed for feeling such emotion. Yet another paradox.

OH MY GOD MY NEW HERO.
Sir, you are welcome to take my firstborn child for bondage, and I will go ahead and squelch those deviants myself.

You've made me laugh elf, well done :). Four stars.

Rogwar and Animal, Thanks for your kind words, but like all the users of this BB there occasionally is dropped upon our heads a subject that causes us great emotional turmoil that raises the hackles of our righteous indignation to such a point that our only alternative is to squelch.
Ripsnort, AK Wabbit and AK Deja Vu have crossed the line... Ripsnort because he is an anal-retentive poser who only PRETENDS he's not killing kittens and AK Deja Vu and AK Wabbit because they are incestious cousins. Believe me, I squelched them with great regret, but nonetheless, I have squelched them.
Now to prove I'm not a total dick I will give Ripsnort the Yanker and the Incestious Cousins of AK a second chance- Post that I am your daddy and that you like being spanked hard with my fat leather belt, kiss my taint with a bit of tongue in my milk dud and I will unsquelch you. This is my final offer, AK Wads.

Heh.. seems like my reply brought quite the stir. Point of fact, I lost a very good friend to an accident. He's gone... it hurt like hell and messed w/me for a long time and seldom does a day go by that I DONT think of him. I KNEW HIM, he was my friend.
Now..some guy dies that I dont know... far away. Yea..I'm like man that sucks. And YES I think the indiv who did it is a pretty fu(*ed up indiv who deserves what they get. BUT... how is THIS going to "hurt me"...huh? Tell me how many of you are feeling the loss and remorse that perhaps somebody who KNEW him is? Your not...period.
All I'm saying is that I feel people give or show remorse or pity for something that is very remote to them...its safe that way. If you have true feelings for this sort of thing...if there is some sort of horror in your heart for the helpless, the hurt, the weak etc...then DO SOMETHING more than talk about it. Give a bum something warm to wear perhaps. Donate to the Salvation Army... help out in your local soup kitchen... etc.
Sorry to of annoyed anyone...it wasnt my intention.

Un-diddlying-believable....
I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth are and the news this morning said that her lawyers are claiming the police are inflating the charges and making a mountain out of a molehill. They say its just a simple case of "failing to stop and render aid."
-
We did't know thee guy and all so feeling wise we might not be so involved.
Only 'it could have been you'. Think she'd gived a f*ck? Probably not.
Then there's another thing. That slow rage and hatred you get worked up for a person like this.
Just being on this BB has made me review many of my moral standings. Am beginning to think that th death penalty, under certain conditions, might not be a bad idea at all.
-
Elfenwolf - nice, very nice. My type of humour.
Still, the case described is very hard to believe. This world is rather shrecked up.
-
Wow. Now I found this thread. Anyway, empathy and compassion does not mean you have to lose sleep.
<>
I too have had incidents with persons and I could easily hold ill-will towards those persons' groups of color, religion, music taste or whatever, but I don't. I've lost people too and that does not mean I'm allowed to be any more insensitive towards a death. The real kicker here to me is that this woman's actions are another knock against the nature of our humanity. Or, I can't possibly categorize this person as being the same type of being as me. We cannot solve all the world's troubles individually, but when you have a man impaled in your car and you let him die a slow death in your garage (how long would she have kept him there?), it's a very ugly shadow on our nature. This makes me sad. I'll probably remember this story to the end of my days.
Some of you really disturb me.
