Hi, Do you know if there is a way to extract the aces high modells and/or convert them into a common format like 3ds to "play" with them in 3d animations programms?
thx

Well, I believe that would be a copyright and/or trademark violation, but it may be rather moot.
Games need data formats that are not compatible with any 3D modeling software on the market. You would not believe what a game company has to do to get the data from a 3D modeling package into a format that can be used in a game.
3DStudio's GMax is the first attempt to have a 3D modeling program that actually saves data in a format that can be used in a game, but they require the game company to license the loader libraries for an outrageous amount of money.

Well, I think its not a violation if you use them for private, just for fun.
and some games has the modells in a readable formats, Half life for example.

From HTC's software license:
"Limitations of Reverse Engineering, Decompilation and Disassembly. You may not reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the SOFTWARE, except and only to the extent that such activity is expressly permitted by applicable law notwithstanding this limitation."
The Quake engine based games are all open source. This is part and parcel with using the Quake engine. It is also the reason these games have an extensive array of mods as well as cheats. These games do not suffer from competition as HTC's sim does.
For instance, if the models were publicly available, what would prevent another competitor from using that model as a basis for creating thier own, thus circumventing the enormous amount of time it takes to create these models from scratch.
Quake based games are all fantasy and so this is not an issue.

Well,:(
I think I have to create my own modells... which is harder...
I did not know that quake engine games are open source...
was new to me.
But, thx for the replies.

Sorry dude thats the way it is. I feel ya, I've been trying for 2 years and still cant create a 3D aircraft I really like in 3dsmax.
I like to model military equipment but i stick to stuff without wings!! Maybe we could get some Art Institute Alumni to give us a few pointers ;)
Well I was gonna put up a pic of the Uboat im working on but showing it would mean it would be really small! I resized it to 320X240 and it's still too big to attach.

Hi
I did one modell too, but in lightwave not in 3d max but it would be definitly better to have a proffesional modell to practice.
you can see it here http://www.newanims.de.vu.

There are free 3d air craft models all over the internet. Pretty much in any format you wish.

Hiya.. coupla tips that I use to do decent planes (or anything else for that matter) in 3d:
1) get a good 3-view ..side, top, and front are minimum.. bottom view if you're gonna model doors and gear accurately.
2) Build a plastic model of it .. a 3d shape really answers a lot of questions: ie: just how the Mustang canopy fits the fuselage that a 3-view doesn't show.
3) scan the 3-views in and use 'em to make a line shape template for top, side, and front that you can build over the top of.
From there you just have to go for it. Your first iterations will be high poly count .. as you get better at it you will get more effective.
Don't be afraid to select a set of faces, hide the rest, and work a specific detail until it looks right.. or even detach 'em and work 'em as a seperate object until you're satisfied. (wing-fuse joins f'rinstance)
A good model is only 30 percent of the total.. the rest of it is texture mapping and lighting (or environment).
For mapping .. gotta have reference.. attention to detail, know how things 'look' ..especially a plane that's been on open field operations for several months. They aint museum peices :)

No wonder you cant do that... 3DSmax sucks a big time :D that is the reason why you fail to do so ;)
