Considering getting a NEW monitor. I'm think 21inch...any advice/brands/tips?

Just my opinion.
I moved from a low price 17 inch to a high end 19 sony g400 monitor (grr much money to spend)and then suddenly realised what a good monitor is :) I was stunned by the diffrence not realy just the size ,but the clearness and good feeling by just looking at websites,programs and then last and most important AH very clear and good.
The diffrence is huuuugee not only to go from 17 to 19 but the picture and refresh rate on the monitor also, just cannot see why in hell i spent so much money on other hardware before a good monitor.
But I learnt a lesson never again I will try saving money on monitors vs other hardware, The monitor goes first from now on.
So if u got the money get a real good one like sony, eizo or stuff like that

For a 21"...NEC FP1370 (actually a 22" with 20" viewable). Fastest refresh rates on the planet and subjectively the best image ever seen on a CRT. If you can afford it,..you will not be disappointed.
How about 1600x1200 @ 102Hz!!
If you slide back to a 19 incher,..then the NEC FP-955 is the best.
With these monitors, VSync on or off will not matter as most video cards could not keep up with the refresh rates.
I should warn you though. With these monitors you best have a good video card, as you will see things you have never seen before when moving from a cheap monitor.

I'm a sucker for the big, flat Sony trinitron tubes. Dampening wire is no issue for me, and clarity and sharpness is always extremly good. Got a 21 inch Nokia 445 Pro, and my 3Dcard can't quit keep up.
Spending money on a good CRT monitor is always smart, would take a good monitor over the latest prosessor any day. Systems i build for others always include a good monitor - it's the most important part of any computer.

Went from a 19" to a 21"... big diff... 21" is definitly better.... more kills...etc.... my wife is right....bigger is better

Dang! I'm really feeling the dinosaur after reading about the joysticks and now this thread. I'm using an old CTX 13" viewable monitor after my 17" broke many months ago. :-(
There are times I literally cannot see an enemy plane if he's below me and thus cannot tell if he's coming or going until he flies right past my nose and my cable modem announces my FE the winner to detect a collision has occured. Another... :-(

Does the refresh rate of a monitor effect system performance such as add stress to Ram or cpu?

No ohNoo. The only thing a high refresh rate does for you is to allow you to see every frame as it was intended to be seen.
Put it another way; I get a kick out of guys that rant and rave about a 200 frame rate and then I ask, "Neat, but what is your refresh rate on your monitor?". "Uh, 85Hz". Well ain't that peachy, that means you are not seeing more than half of what is being drawn.
Or from this perspective. If you monitor refresh rate is 85Hz non-interlaced (very important by the way) then the maximum frame rate you can have before video display information is lost is 85 FPS.
Don't get me wrong. Really high frame rates is not a bad thing for certain games. It also means your display card is a powerhouse. I just think it really funny guys would spend 300+ dollars on a high end video card and strap it to a slow monitor.

Not exactly. It has a significant effect on eye-strain. This is particularly important for 2D work. I find anything less than 75 Hz flickery, and prefer 85 Hz as a usable minimum. On my personal workstation at work and at home, I simply don't run lower than 100Hz: my eyes are precious.

I bought an NEC FP955 on Skuzzy's recommendation. It's an awesome 19" monitor and reasonably priced. Super sharp text at a very easy on the eyes 1600x1200 @ 85 Hz.

i just brought home a 17.4 (veiwable) flatscreen LCD, so far i love it.
could have got bigger screen, higher refresh, for less money in a crt but the lack of reflections on the LCD is awsome.
completely ended the arguements with the wife:
her: "My plants need sunlight!!!"
me: "I can't see the planes, close the damn shade!!!"

Quite right qts. Eyestrain is a problem with low end monitors or improperly set refresh rates.
Here is something most people do not know and is only recently coming into light which will also cause eyestrain.
Physcologically, your brain knows what text should look like. When you have a cheapo monitor with fuzzy text, your brain tries to compensate for this by adjusting your vision to try to clear it up. This causes much more eyestrain than the refresh rate.
The effect can be noticed by anyone that wears glasses. When you take off your glasses (I wear glasses and it does this), there is an instant when things are much blurrier and then some of the blurriness clears up.
This only occurs after wearing my glasses after an hour or so.

I'm bouncing around the idea of getting a flat panel, but always heard they are not very good for gaming. How does yours compare to your previous monitor?

I must say (and I too wear glasses) that it's the flicker I notice. Possibly I've been lucky enough to not use bad monitors.

so far i love it, the contrast on this one is 1:400 so you don't have to turn the brightness way up to see detail, the result is you get much richer color without loosing objects in the shadows.
and in-room light(lamps, open windows, etc) just kinda gives you a low haze on the monitor instead of actual reflections like with the crt.
so far the only negitives i've found is that for less than half the money i could have had larger screen, higher rez, and higher refresh rate, i'm not sure why they wouldn't be thought good for gaming, i haven't found any problems.

If you are poor, I would suggest going to a refurb shop. I got my HP 21" 1600X1200 100hz for 300 dollars. In fact I bought two. Had them for 3 years, and love em to bits. I run at 1076x768 at 120hz with a frame rate of 100 fps (in ah). Man it is truly a great view. Too bad I use it as a TV and sit 5 feet from it while I play, so it still feels like I am sitting at a desk with a 17".
