Ain't got no NNTP at work.
-
Which is definately something to consider. Personally, I'd like to see HT and co. set up an nntp that mirrors the UBB. Then everyone has whatever they like best and nobody is "left out" (or feels inconvenienced by having to bebop back and forth). :)
-
The work access is a real problem, and the only meaningfull reason for UBB's that I've ever seen.
However, as Arlo says, there are software packages around that allow both, and NTTP functionality is so far and away ahead of UBB that it makes it very worthwhile to consider.
Not the least of which are archiveing and kill files!

good luck trying to get NNTP, it's been asked ever since that UBB place called AGW became one of the most used place in WB.

In a "six degrees of Kevin Bacon" sorta way, I had something to do with this. AGW was becoming immensely popular, and board admin was becoming a nightmare for Argo. I was running UBBS and suggested he come in and look around. I gave him admin rights, and after a few days he was sold. You guys hated it, but from an admin standpoint it was much better for him.
Yup, blame Kieren for the board you hate!
-
Strange you say that Kieran, we run several NNTP newsgroups for AW, and there's always at least 4 groups for each event (one for each side, one for CM's and one general) and we do it that way because admin's easier. What, from an admin point of view, makes UBB atractive?)
-
I don't have current NNTP software to compare against, so I cannot say. At the time, Argo was using a java applet to run his board I believe, and the UBBS software allowed him much easier access than what he was using. I also allowed him to set moderators, taking the workload off of him a bit. I'm sure current NNTP could do that, I just happened to get to him first.
-
There is software that allows web and nntp access for the same messages. O'Reilly has one that does both but it's pricey. I think it runs about $2k
-
Man, if folks are squeaking about the BBS format, that means theres not alot left in the game that HTC can make better!
-
UBB when I introduced it to Argo cost $50 IIR. No contest- he was doing that out of his own pocket.
-
OReilly boards are garbage. Gamestorm, in it's last iteration, used them and they sukked.
My personal preference is NNTP. But as has been pointed out it would cost $$$ for HTC to use a program that does both. An example of which BD5Pilot mentioned. Speed here is not much of an issue imo. Most folks are on a LAN or cable/dsl service these days. Not all, but a heck of a lot. Not as bad as when we all had to "make do" with 28.8, 36.6 or 56k dial ups.
It may also ultimately boil down to why would HiTech ever want to change? In other words "for what"? What benefit does it offer the overall AH community and most importantly HTC? More of what we've all had to read here this past week? Well IMO such a choice already exists. It's an nntp server with a newsgroup called 'BigWeek' :)
I suggest that instead of trying to change the AH webboards into another BigWeek that the residents of BigWeek offer up the nntp addy and invite the AH community there. BEst of both worlds already exists. Someone make the bridge. I would but it's not my place as a non participant in BW anymore to offer up the nnttp addy.

1: Hell, Westy. Not visiting your old haunts was your decision, amigo. But if you truly feel that it wasn't your place to "light the way there" since you no longer visit it, why'd you even bring it up?
2: If you think mirroring the ubb with an nntp server would be a waste of expense and just promote "more of the same", what makes you think sending the entire crowd here to BigWeek would be a good option (even if it is more cost effective for HiTech Creations)?
3: Hold your horses. Neutral ground via nntp is being considered as "we speak".
Westy, I've (virtually) known you for years and truly consider you a friend (you've shown it and I remember it). Remember me? I'm the guy who got pretty damned tore up when I saw you and you-know-who at each other's throats and then you turned your back and hit the door. I kinda figured you'd be glad to see many of your old BW friends arrive (even though many arrived a bit too boisterous and swaggering for the tastes of many here).
But ... I certainly didn't expect you to take it as an opprotunity to pick sides and go at your old friends the way you are. Hell, even threads that are nothing more than someone asking a legitimate question and recieving a legitimate answer are encouraged to devolve down to "How dare you new-uns walk in he-yar and criteesize us and deemand change and awl!"
Granted, I saw the day when you were one of the most loyal and outspoken members of "the lunatic fringe", so I shouldn't be surprised to see you loyal and outspoken here. As a matter of fact, demanding change was alot of what it was about when you made your split with the BW community. And you were and still are considered one of the most prolific posters and holders of BW traditions. But I figured there'd be at least enough of a thread connected still for you to remember, relate and try to be more of a mediator than a regulator.
I still consider you a pretty good friend, Westy. Even though you don't seem to want to acknowledge such ties in public AH circles. :)
-
Arlo please don't blend it all together and call it the same. I see a difference between many old friends (you're definately included) coming here and joining us in AH. Sorry for the circumstance (not really but hey, I'm trying to be nice about it <G> ) but I just cannot say some of you put your best foot forward. IMO what you , Rotor and a few did was come along and basically shake the apple cart here with some pretty ridiculous trolling and general behavior. You guys don't behave that way on BigWeek but several of you go on as if you do. You wouldn't stand for "unkowns" coming to Bigweek and doing the same. And to most AHers, BigWeek and it's denizens are the unkown. Sorry if you feel I'm stepping on toes, I'm not trying to, but I'm not the only ex-AW/Bigweeker who sees it that way. Most of the humour passed off here has been of the "you had to be there" type and most here were not. A lot of it is "in your face" humour that's just over the line or "way out there." That works fine for folks who've know each other for quite a long time. Five days isn't a long time :)
Westy
p.s. I really hate to see it appear that you're linking "friendship" with having to accept the "style" of posting this last few days. Escpecially when said style is not normal in the least for any of the people posting and in fact it's being done to provoke the natives here.

Methinks you're doing a fair amount of "blending" yourself, amigo. :| I've tried to keep things pretty light-hearted. And when that even offended some, I backed off entirely and tried to keep it square and honest ... only to see the offended party keep going for the jugular (something that most people realize generally backfires).
ShruG
Maybe it'll all stabilize and things will, for the most part, go back to the way they were (infighting amongst the jerks and fun amongst the rest). Maybe I'll be considered an "AW villian" by some from now on (which I find ironic and hope you do too). Either way, Westy ..... I've not let it affect our friendship. If that's what you came off thinking with my last post, I'm sorry you took it that way - wasn't the intention.
I was just surprised by ya. I figured you'd mediate and/or translate and not chastise so much. That's ok, I've adopted the mediator/translator role. I only hope it isn't too compromised by the blending. :
-
Boisterous? Hm, more like annoying and childish.
Your mileage may vary, but for me when someone new enters a group, proclaims better judgement and knowledge, berates the group and makes a lot of inside jokes to other newcomers and then suggest that those who do not appreciate amazinhunk behaviour lack a sense of humour, it ticks me off.
Now, I've talked to several AW's online, in the game, and I've liked the dudes. I just wish people would approach this board and this community in the same way as they'd approach a new group in real life.
Behaving like an bellybutton in real life gets you slapped. I gather the comfort and safety/anonymity of the net makes normal unwritten rules of conduct obsolete.
We'll notice you. We'll grow to like you. Just give it a little time, don't force it down our throats :).
-
Are you ticked off at me personally?
Give me more specifics and I'll see about making amends. No generalizations, no broad accusations. What exactly do YOU want from ME? If it's even remotely reasonable, I'll make a sincere effort. :)
btw ... you don't know how hard it is to take you seriously with the game moniker of "Baron StSanta Von GrossenArsch" (chuckle). You appear to be taking all this VERY seriously though and I'm doing my best to reply in kind. I hope you at least appreciate that. :D

Heheh, no, nothing against you arlo, not at all :). It was more an overall observation on what I expect from people.
And, as you probably will see if you hang around for a bit, you'll find that it's extremely rare for me to be serious :).
I just get a bit miffed when someone just clomps on in with no regards for the ones already in place, expecting the ones already here to conform, I guess.
It'll soon pass. But, you gotta admit, some of the AW'ers entries have been less than graceful :).
Others have conducted themselves impeccably.
Now, I just want to finish off with saying I hate you all, you're loathsome and I only waste recycled electrons on insulting you: new ones you do not deserve :D

Arlo, not sure what it is you're trying to do or prove. Yes. I've blended in. I've beena community member here since just about day one on these boards and I flew the first night of AH open beta. I've made as many, if not more, aquaintances and virtual friends here as I had in AW. This place is AH's community lounge just as BigWeek was for AW - at one time and for a long one at that. this is where I hang my leather "pilots" cap and watermelon chat about whatever.
Stop trying to get the last word in on a botched entry. Please just mellow out and "blend." AH doesn't have to pass any kind of culture test for you, or anyone from AW/Bigweek, as decidely being fit to come and join. IMO it's the other way around.

Oh geeze... arlo is just a zany mischivious fun lover who has been victimized by the mean ol AH'ers who lack any sense of humor?
Yes, it was a black and white board untill rotor and arlo came here and showed us all how to laugh with their clever (if mostly plagerized and mostly childish) sense of needy "look at me" humor.

Your fixation with me is somewhat mildy disturbing, Laz. But as long as you keep it here and don't call my house or show up on my doorstep in a dress carrying a knife or something, I suppose I can live with it. Like I said elsewhere dude. I'm here for you.
Vent ... let all the bad stuff out. Don't log off feeling angry. :)

My bad ... my mistake. Guys, I think there's been a case of mistaken identity here. The Westy I know knows me better than this. (StSanta knows me better than this)
AHWesty .. my apologies to you, man. I hope whatever association I claimed with you in the past doesn't hurt your rep here.

Arlo. You're not hurting my reputation here at all.
Perhaps some folks at BigWeek have been simply been cloistered away so long in that online private world that these inside jokes and forms of "banter" have evolved into it's own species of humour. One only shared by a few. Some of which is just not being recognized, by those on the outside, as anything funny.
Even I, having spent about four years in and out of there (sounds like visits to rehab :) ), did not think there was much of anything humorous about how some from AW burst upon the AH scene here. It's really just that simple. No hidden agenda. I'm not taking sides nor turning away from old friends.

Argghhhh"java applet"....RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!
Don't EVEN get me started on what I think about
the freaking invasion of the "got to have all the latest bells & whitsle
crap for no apparent reason" that seems to prevail
on sites these days.
I'm more than content to use NS 3.0 for web
access but am "forced" to also keep a copy
of NS6.0 and IE5.0 on my system to be able
to access those ^^$##&&( sites that INSIST on
running java with no alternatives.
NS3.0 loads fast, rarely crashes on me, and
and has the requisite nntp newsreader. That's
pretty much it as far as what I need.
When EA took over AW and FORCED the community to use
their phoney-baloney IE-FRIENDLY-ONLY gamelauncher I was pissed! I really do NOT
like MS to have it's hands on my browsing, thus
one of the reasons I use NS whenever possible.
Now, what were we talking about? :)

Well Aub, I think you KNOW about the -SNIP-
thing since your reply didn't contain ANY of
the previous text :)
HTML...now THERE is a REAL evil "tool"! IMO, if
it can't be "siad" with CAPS and FREAKING-punctuation!-
then it need not be said at all :)
And as to "let it ALL out"...well this
FREAKING-TINY-DIALOG-BOX that we're given to
reply within makes that REALLY-FREAKING-DIFFICULT
to do when I can't see all of my entire
higher level thought processes displayed on
a single page before me. This constant scrolling
back and forth, up and down, is enough to
PORK anyones eyesight, not to mention the induced
sea sickness!
Does that answer you're :) query, eh?

Yes, it does :) I just wanted to see you rant :D

UBB's ok. I only read it from a T1 connect though. UBB sux for dial-up that's for sure!
An NNTP/UBB compatible board would be best...hey, I can dream can't I?

Type in Word, spellcheck, cut-and-paste here. Simple.
This BBS isn't perfect, but it ain't the devil. ;)

Well gee... I guess that about sums it up. an insider fart joke is still a fart joke. With any luck (and a few hundred less posts) we will all stay ousiders.

Yes, Lazs ... we all know that you and Westy share the same brain now. Trust me, I share your sentiments on the last part. :)
