My airfare is already paid for to fly to the con, but I'm not convinced that the new security measures put in place at airports are strict enough.
I am afraid of heights, so I don't like to fly to begin with(except virtually, because the farthest I could fall would be out of my chair, about 2 ft.), and now with terrorism a distinct possibility....
If it were just me, I'd chance it without much thought. But I have a wife and 2 yr old son to live for. I know the odds for a safe trip are in my favor, but I'm sure that's what those 266 people thought on Tuesday, too.
And sure, I could get killed in a car accident on the way there or back, but at least most people out on the roads aren't trying to kill others.
I know I sound paranoid, but is it really paranoia considering what just happened?
Minnesota to Grapvine TX, 941 miles= 16 hrs according to Yahoo maps.
Hmmm...what to do, what to do......

Don't let 'em win.

banana,..today I would be concerned, but by the end of the month,...welp,..let's see what it is like.
-
No trains?

banana:
Even if 4+ airliners crashed a year, air travel would still probably be many times safer than auto travel. Thousands of people die each year in auto accidents. Yet we only hear about:
The ones in our home towns,
the ones that involve many fatalities,
the ones that kill the famous
and the ones that kill people that we know.
Airline accidents and crashes always dominate the news because they are so dramatic and involve massive loss of life, so we are much more aware of them.
Keep your tickets, and if you drive a small car, sell it and buy a Volvo.

banana, you have to think like a terrorist.
Terrorist like guerilla freedom fighters (actually they're usually the same) hit where the enemy is weak and where they least expect it.
While I'm sure that there will be terrorist activities in the future concerning air travel, I wouldn't expect to see it happen in the near future.
Remember it has been over 10 years since the last hijacking in the US.
There are way too many juicy targets in the US that are practically ungaurded right now. Which I won't go into.
I'm still flying to the Con.
-
I dunno, about the last thing I would expect right now is another hijacking attack.
-
I'll be flying towards the end of this month. More somber, definately, but I'm not going to stop living just because someone wants me to die.
Won't be flying to Dallas though, well, because it's faster to drive. Especially now with longer check in.
-
Swing by CA on the way and pick me up. ;)
-
It's your wife and your child banana, no one elses. You do what you think is best to protect them.
-
I'm driving from California, but not because of terrorists. That's what I had planned to do already.
banana,
My advice to you is to do what makes you feel most comfortable and what you judge best for your family.
-
I have reservations to see my grandaughter Oct.5 thru the 8th for her birthday in Colorado. I will be on that aircraft. I look at it this way. I not going to cowtow to them and if they are on our plane I will look at it positively. I will concider it a target rich environment! They won't stand a chance with all the pent up anger we americans have toward terrorists! They should be the ones afraid now... not us!

Ever since the airline made it a plicy that the only people that would be armed on a flight were the bad guys.....I have felt that every time I boarded a plane I was on my own.
I don't feel "safe" in a plane with every single person disarmed except the bad guys... the only thing that makes me feel that it will be ok is.... luck of the draw. To be on the same plane as a crazy would be very unlucky but let's not fool ourselves....
The airlines are throwing us to the wolves and we are just throwing the dice. They pretty it up by making it safe for us on the ground but when those wheels leave the ground... you are on your own in a very bad situation with no tools and no chance for outside help. If you feel 'safe'... you are an idiot and allways have been.
The way to look at any airlines scam for security is... Would it have stopped what just happened? Till we get some armed good guys to counter the armed bad guys.... we have no "security". There really is no other viable solution. And.... it's one hell of a lot less intrusive than some of the crap they are comintg up with so far!

What Thrawn said! It's your family, you do what you thinks best for them.

lazs, arming passengers on an aircraft is absurd and insane. In no way would you be anymore "safe." First, it would allow those who intend to hijack to enter the aircraft with whatever weapons they feel are necessary. Second, you end up with idiots (and even non-idiots) trying to "defend" themselves from the evil terrorists and punching holes in the pressurized cabin, hitting other innocent passengers, and generally causing chaos and mayhem when calm control of that kind fo situation is extremely important and absolutely necessary. Leave your defense to the Sky Marshals and their frangible bullets, and to the pilots who are going the best whoopee job they can to keep you and people on the ground safe. Arming the passengers would create at least as many problems as it solves.
-
Laz,
In one respect I probably don't disagree with what you are saying at all. But in response to the following I would like to express an opinion.
If you feel 'safe'... you are an idiot and allways have been.
By difintion:
I must be an idiot!
Here is why.....
(BACKGROUND)
The terrorists carefully picked an aircraft ..this time.. as the means to carry out thier goal. They used the the jet fuel for the excellerant and the aircraft as means of delivery to accomplish there mission. There mission was to attack the U.S. economically as well as spread terror among our people. In the future we should not have a single focus just on the air travel industry. We need to think of how the next attacks might come. I would hope that they never do but we must prepare ourselves because they certainly could. The next time it might be in a shopping mall, the grocery store, an eating establishment, anywhere in populated areas and maybe in unpopulated areas just to try and convey that nowhere is safe. Water supplies, bio-agents, small nuclear pevices, letter bombs or any other weapon or device could be used as delivery sytems.
(THOUGHT)
"Fear" or "Trust" in something or someone is what gives us our sense of safety or security. Only by "trusting" in anything or anyone do we ever get a "feeling" of safety or security. People everywhere in the world face this same proposition. To this point in time man has been appointed once to live and once to die. Unless we are taken out of the world by some other means every life that comes into the world will certainly someday perish. It is what we chose to do with the time we do have that counts. Hopefully we will not chose to be slaves to FEAR.
I feel if I place my faith in "man or his systems" to provide my total feeling of safely then you would be right. It is my faith in "Jesus Christ" that gives me my only real "feeling of safety". For others it may be something or someone else. We all have our own choices to make.
Respectully,
Thunder

banana, if you want to help America, you can start by realizing although air travel is never 100%, it's hardly a death wish and this industry despertley needs everyones help.
The economy is about to take a bad hit. The airlines have just announced 10 Billion in loses, some with 20% decrease in flights, and other carriers fear collapse entirley. Continental may cut jobs up to 16,000 people. Yup, hard working American with families, without jobs. Another carrier is looking to layoff 1000 pilots. The terrorists just continue to hit America in the aftermath in fear don't they?
Don't fall to the lies, fear and terrorist fallout. Fly and support American companies. Airlines are VITAL to our economy. Not only do they provide transportation for the businessmen that help our economy grow, but your mail, and goods as well.
Please reconsider.
And laz, good grief. You can beat your shoot everything in sight drum, but man, to say we have no security is silly. Tell ya what, next guy that pulls a box cutter out, slowly remove your seat cushion, you know the one that has straps you put on your arm like a shield and use a floatation device? That one. Then just run him over while 90 other Americans kick the toejam out of him. He cant avoid you, the Aisle is 24" or something ridiculous wide.

flight attendent giving preflight briefing
"" exits over here , seat belts etc etc , and in case of a highjacking please grab your seat cushions and beat the highjacker to death, thank you for flying dumbo airlines""

Creamo, I'm already supporting Sun Country airlines because I've already paid for my ticket. As I said before, I'm like John Madden when it comes to flying anyway, I only fly when I have to. I've decided that since I don't get around America much anyways, that I'm going to go the slow, scenic route. I'll be investigating Greyhound and Amtrak, although I don't think Amtrak goes between Minnesota and Texas, however.
I'll be out the $131 I paid for my round trip ticket, but the peace of mind I'll have will make up for it.
-
Dont know what the routes are banana but there is an Amtrak station in Fort Worth I think.
-
Amtrak crashes weekly planes once in great while!!
-
Don't let em win.
Airline travel has always been safer than driving... and now, after the attack, it will be even safer!
-
LOL sling, I checked into Amtrak. There are no N to S tracks in the midwest, so to take the train, I'd go from Minneapolis to Portland, OR, then down to LA, then over to Dallas. If I leave on the 10th, I should be to the con on the 16th! :D
Right now, I'm fixing to throw the pc in the trunk, and drive myself. It's either that or Greyhound.
Like I said before, I don't consider the security "improvements" made in the last week to be sufficient. Until we have armed marshalls on the planes, I'm driving.
-
Trust...funny where folks place theirs...eh Thunder.

Heh heh...like I said...I dont know what the routes are. ;) Sounds like you might need a few more days of vacation if you're taking the train.

BUSES SUCK!!!!!
You have been warned. The stop at ever little freakin po-dunk town on the route. My best advice to you would be to take a couple of days and make the drive. It could probobly be done straight through, but that's not safe and I want to meet you :)

Hehe Udie, after thinking what it would be like sharing that bus restroom, and all the stops, etc....I've decided to load up the Saturn and head South on I35. :)
