Ok, I am curious as to what everone thinks about this. I was in a Scenario yesterday ... and icons were set to d3.0 instead of 6.0. Man, it sure was fun!
It seems that with the check 6 feature and radar abilities, it is quite difficult to bounce someone. Perhaps if we set icon range to d3.0 it would be easier. Check 6 calls would not come in as quickly, and well, radar would still attempt to spoil I suppose.
Why not try this for Tour 8? Or even for a week or so in Tour 8? Or should we just keep it in the Scenarios? I dunno, but man its intense!

just keep it in scenarios. I have no trouble bouncing people (or being bounced) in the MA in large fites. there are so few planes and only two sides in scenarios it is like apples and oranges. Much easier to tell who is who (or at least it was in WB HA, don't participate in AH special events).

I'm kinda for the 3k icons.. but only for enemy aircraft (maybe 3.5k... and 2k for below 500 feet). I think friendlies should stay at 6k. The main reason being that you can not use the "check 6" feature if they are out of icon range... and its real easy to get more than 3.5k away.

Deja is for short icons?
Nimitz, start another thread saying you're for no in-flight radar please.
Thanks,

-
WHy not do it the other way around... MAKE icons visable from 3k out.. But in closer you need to actually watch for the PLANE that you are about to fight.
There is no problem keeping track of an aircraft that is 1k-2k aournd you..

Sigh. Typical for you hblair.
You are too prone to think "I don't want stupid changes made to the game just for the sake of change" to mean "I don't want any changes made to the game".

Lighten up DJ, surely you know a joke when you see one. :)
-
My eyesight is 20/20, I play on a 15" monitor in 800x600 with 2x FSAA.
My opinion doesn't matter because I can see the planes fine... icon or no icon. Long icon or short icon.
How about the newbies? Or the people that must wear glasses? Or the people that have a low resolution monitor, wear glasses AND are newbies? The list goes on.

I like the 3.0 idea. That and with reduced icon size will break my 4th Saitek hat switch programmed to views since beta . Well worth it though.
Can they do the smaller font size, without bigtime probs?
-
I have a feeling that my one remaining hat switch on the X36 (the joystick, not the throttle) is going to crap out soon... Creamo, you said that you got a refurbished X36 from Saitek, how would I do that? How much is it? And how long has it lasted? I've had mine for over a year now... but I think the joystick's last hat switch is on it's last leg.

Kinda missed where we were on joking terms hblair.
I did get the "if its a squadie he must be right" implication.
So.. if it was a joke.. it wasn't funny.

well Sw i for one would fly in a HA mostly, but dont always make the
scenarios because im not around at the exact time they start
im sure alot of people have this prob. i say put in a HA and see how it does.
if it doest fair to well it can always be removed

100% agree wity jcy19
HTC should create a HISTORICAL plane set... map.. that only inculdes those planes for a specifc period of time, country against country...
and without icons under 2k :D
-
Need numbers to open a HA. Need people to fly scenarios to prove there's a real desire for a HA.
Until then, you might just be peeing in the wind.
EDIT: BTW, if you think the MA has problems right now... and you want a permanent HA... you ain't seen nuthin' yet! Lopsided teams, one side has better aircraft, etc... Just keep that in mind.

Historic Arena is an oxymoron.
Events are where it's at.

I kinda see your point Anrky...
It could wind up being another Limited planeset Furball.. instead of the Multiplane set furball. we have now.
-
For me Distance is not as important as being able to tell enemy from friendly. Once their within the 1k range I'm concentrating on shooting them down or getting them off my six.
-
How in the world do I get into these arguements? What are we arguing over anyway? Truce DJ? We're both grown men aren't we? I'll make you a deal, no more cheap shots on you if you'll say you want to lose the dar in the MA. Deal?
Seriously, truce?
(I love you man!)

Why does everyone hijac my thread? I am serious curious what everyone thinks :) I guess I will just my kicks for it in the scenarious. Thanks for the input for those that responded ;/

Still out on the question of D3 enemy icons. I do have to admit that icon setting in the Rumble gave an addition to the pucker factor. It was very cool.
However, in the main arena. I’m not so sure. I think the MA should be setup for the least experienced and knowledgeable pilots. Being able to see the enemy at D6 can give you an advantage of being able to flee the engagement. At D3, well with E and altitude advantage against you there wouldn’t be much of a chance to turn tail and run.
With the current settings there is a lot of room to plan what the next move is. How, where, and when to engage and so on. Not sure about the rest of you but it took me awhile to build my situational awareness. I think new players could be at a serious disadvantage with a D3 setting.

nimmy i like it
as for "less experienced and knowledgeable pilots" well i think that unless you have at least a years stck timein SOME sort of flight sim you arent going to stand a flying chance in aces high. that flight sim could be fighetr ace, i dont care, but you bette rknow the differene from ridder and ailerons. aces high is not and should not be a sim to cut your teeth on... the frustration factor flying against 10 year vets would be too high imo. when i started in tour 3 i think i had a rough time and i had already played flight sims offline on and off since AOTP and i still had a rough time.
btw if youall remember, all you guys arguing about icons, i played ACES OF THE PACIFIC in 320x200 resolution glory without icons. funny how we didnt need em then but now with 1280x1024 we do need em :)

Oh man is that a buncha crap... if newbies don't play how the hell can you expect AH to stay afloat?
I trained the pilot you all know as "GA", who is the CO of the 332nd Mongrels European wing. He went by "wobbel" at the time (not TheWobble)... 2 weeks of flying in the TA and he's kicking ass.
So don't tell me this game isn't for newbies. It isn't that hard to catch onto if you have someone who's been playing these things for years.

I agree with you Zigrat that it would be extremely difficult for a new pilot who has never experienced an online flight SIM before. It would be damn right frustrating. At the same time SW makes a point about training. I actually think it would be easier for someone not experienced at all. Why? There are not any pre-learned bad habits from the other SIM’s.
My experience is only with FA; however, that is an excellent example. There I had the advantage of a full screen view, external views, and a padlock that makes the chic from the Exorcist look like an amateur. I had the basics of flight down but getting used to using the hat switch only, well I ended up with a new joystick after throwing the other one, hehe.
I seem to remember a quote, “You can be the best pilot in the world, know all of the ACM’s, and its all worthless if you can’t land hits on the target down range”, or something like that. The hardest part of AH to me was getting used to the views. Now this is close up and the discussion is icons far away but I think the same applies.
The new pilot: “I can fly somewhat but still stall out every once in awhile. I’m flying along and the icon appears without me seeing the dot before. I’m scared, jerk the stick, I’m dog meat. Paint a big target on me please”
<Cough> On another note, Fester didn’t seem to have any problems racking up 63 kills last night and that’s when I was logging off. I have no idea what the streak actually got to. The long range icons and in flight DAR didn’t seem to hinder his ability to score kills in anyway.

Zippatuh, the US Navy and USAF prefer the cadet's that have no flight time over cadet's that have their pilot's license.
It's easier to teach guys something new than to change what they are already acquainted with. ;)

I dunno Zig (about the Newbie thing). I played Flying Circus (WW I Sim) for six months or so (maybe a little longer). That was the only experience I had coming into AH. I picked up AH during the summer of 2000, as the first and only WW II flight sim I have ever dabbled with. In a years time I think I have turned into a pretty solid stick.
Although the might Drex visited me last night and made me realize I have a LOT to learn ... :D
Maybe I am just that good though, and able to pick up on things quickly :D May not!
Nim

Are you "AKLarry" Nimmy?
-
Heya Hblair ;)
You want to feel like a newbie. Fly on someone else's system, different monitor size, different stick, going from rudder peddles to rudder control being delivered through the twist motion of the stick, different views on the hat. Very tough, but a lot of fun.

I think that's the only reason that Udie and I got so close to winning the 2 vs 2 at the con, you and Eagl had unfamiliar systems, but ya still won ya bastige! ;) 1 pixel away, ONE PIXEL AWAY!!! ARRRRRRGHHH!
-
We didn't have unfamilar systems, it was the fact that we only had about 20 hours of stick time in AH. heh

I like the shorter icons idea nimitz. There is a vocal minority regarding the icons...there is no doubt that icons are needed but I'd be willing to go with smaller icons and the 3k range.
