I was messing around in the MA (hhhee what i call me flying :).
And of course I was in a me 38.. I was fighting the rooks between 41 and 44. I was below 15k all my hops.. I was trying out some new things on diving the 38. (Stuff I read and saw about the 38) I choose the nme I wanted to pounce on. I chopped throttles, pitched the nose up, and rolled inverted while pulling some light G loads. Once I started to pick up speed I rolled right side up. I in a 35-40 degree dive. I could dive a good 5-7k
doing that E bleeding roll move before I enter the dive. and my speed was in the 450-470mph range. I did start to buffet in some dives. But i never compressed. After about 4 or 5 dives (and as many deaths). I wanted to try something else. Ok do the same same before the roll move to bleed as much E as you can. But while doing and IF your speed is low enough. (say below 225mph) Drop as many notches of flaps you can. This will slow you down and the auto flap retract thingy works damn good with this. Anyway this will slow your accel. but not slow you down and it will pitch the the nose up as well. Now doing use your flaps in this in a dive kinda acts like THE WAY THE DIVE FLAPS SHOULD WORK. But at low speeds. Now I think adding flaps to 38 dives could really help alot.. I think I gained something like 1-2k just by doing that. But speed is still the same as above. Just took longer to reach cause of the induced drag the flaps added at the beginning of the dive. Now you DON'T EVER WANT TO EXCEED A 60 DEGREE DIVE ANGLE IN A 38. Because the damn thing accel. like a rocket. And you will be compressed before you know what happened.
If yall have any ? about this I'll make a film and post it for yall. I'm probaly gonna do that anyway :)

Hey look at your name fer christ sake!! I posted this to help people that are having troubles diving a P-38.. And here you come along and blast away at the 38 which YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO DO!!!!! Man I get tired of toejamfire drivers poping off about the 38.. Hey toejamfiremkv if you took pride in the way you flew. You would be flying a plane that requires use of ACM. And not just doing break turns till ya get the kill OR DIE.

At the risk of actually addressing the topic of this thread (How often do I actually do that?)
BigCrate, Thanks for posting something usefull. I started flying 38's this tour in preperation for the Invasion Sicily Scenario, and while this plane will never be at the top of my list. However, during my flights in the 38, diving was the focus of MUCH of my learning (as anyone who is used to E-fighting or B&Z will undoubtedly understand). I find that skidding in the opening part of the dive can also help bleed some E off to avoid digging a hole to China. Give some hard rudder, then use ailerons to keep the nose pointed where you want it. As you approach the target (use you descretion here) let out the rudder and re-align the nose for whatever shot you're looking for. I try not to skid too much, since it can really bellybutton up your aim if you wait too long. Not to mention that it can really bleed you out of E if used in conjunction with dive breaks, throttle back, and pre-dive climbing.

Hey Sikboy I'll try that that today.. If we had prop pitch control I think the need for throttleing back would be greatly reduced. I read somewhere if you set the prop pitch to fine and do the roll move just before a dive the need for chopping throttles would only have to be done above 20k.
PimpJoe I have no fight with you nor do I want to.. You are respected in the MA. And I respect you don't ruin that by sticking up for some guy. The doesn't know a barrel roll attack from a barrel roll.

We do have prop pitch control (think thats what it is anyways)

i believe the prop pitch control only works when your engine isn't full throttle... and i think it is same pitch for both props
i heard p38 pilots used to change pitch on 1 of their props to help in turns or spiraling dives.. i think p38 could actually reverse pitch too?

So we have prop pitch control. But it only works if the throttles are chopped right??? I don't think the props could reverse their pitch. I know they could feather the props. It was a must really. Get one engine shot out feather that prop so it wouldn't make the other engine work has hard.

The + - REALLY isnt pitch control, merely rpm control--the pitch seems to change automatically, which voids the rpm adjustment, if slowin down is what ya wanna do. Pitch control would be DANG useful to slow plane fer landin (Ill have ya know ive landed at least 3 times this camp) as well as divin

Hmmmm we do have pitch control or we don't have pitch control. Well fellas which one is it??? :) I don't think think we do because when I look thru the keyboard button command paper. It lists no such thing. (or at least that i know of will look again)
Ok my RPM gauge is for what?? Speed of the prop or speed of the engine???
I think the prop pitch is auto controlled. And I WOULD like to see all auto controls (well most auto controls) I don't want the flaps to auto retract and I want to have control on the pitch of my props. I think HTC should give the pilot as much of a load as possible. It makes the game more real. Hheehhheh would be nice to have switch from auto lean mixture to a auto rich setting. :)
I know its game play stuff but we pilots are not dumb after a couple of engines blowing up from not switching mixture setting we would figure out how to and when to switch the setting :).
So what yall think about having as much control over the plane your flying as possible??

RPM indirectly controls prop pitch in variable pitch props.
You can't set a given pitch, but the pitch changes when you reduce rpms (the pitch will get coarser).
I'm not sure if ww2 fighters had prop reverse, or prop beta controls. I've never seen them mentioned, only in turboprops.

In a WW2 context, I've often seen "constant speed" propeller mentioned in contrast to "variable pitch" propellers. The constant speed propeller actually was the same as a variable pitch propeller except that it automatically adjusted the pitch to keep (pretty obvious :-) the speed constant.
Actually, in many German aircraft the pilot could select both "variable pitch" and "constant speed" operation modes. In the "variable pitch" mode, he could directly select the propeller pitch which was displayed to him by an indicator that looked exactly like a small clock. Accordingly, fixed pitched settings were referred to with time designations, for example "11:45" for take-off pitch.

I've to admit that I don't know the term "beta controls", but propeller reversal was pretty rare in WW2 fighters. Messerschmitt had developed a reversible propeller, and in experimental it was found to shorten the landing run of the Me 109 to 100 - 120 m. The Dornier Do 335 also was fitted with a reversible propeller for the same purpose.
(I think the Me 109 was one of the few single-engined fighters to feature a fully feathering propeller, by the way.)

Wow, you learn something new every day on these forums. Here I thought all along that I was performing all sorts of air combat maneuvers in my Spit V, but now as it turns out I'm really not.
Thanks for clarifying this for me, BigCrate! I shall endeavor in the future to fly only those planes that require ACM and not ones that only do break turns until they kill or die.
