The future of food... Quorn! (http://www.quorn.com/).

It's made from a fungus (fusarium venenatum) and apparently, tastes like chicken.

I think that the big marketing push in the U.S. has just begun. We may be learning what you've already known for quite some time. :)

as long as it has a definate "from the earth" quality and has the smell, texture, and color of fungus then I would definately consider eating it...

why do they always say 'tastes like chicken' when they want you to try some new food.

if it tastes just like chicken then i'll just have the chicken

Hmh, I would like to think as a step into the right direction. More food from less resources is a good thing. I guess I wouldn't even mind giving up meat and becoming a vegetarian, or even eating some synthetic toejame if it would mean that less people would have to suffer from starvation.

Btw, thrila, do all of the products taste the same, whether they are in the form of sausages or whatever? I'd guess that they have to add some sort of flavor, because the plain mushroom might taste funny.

SageFin, it's not a matter that we don't have enough, for all I know , we're dumping away tons of food every day here.

That thing is awfull, tried it once, taste is not 'bad', but it realy leaves a bad 'after taste'.

Saintaw I think sagefin was referring to the 80% of people on this globe that -unlinke you americans or us finns- are at edge of, or starvated.

The rich countries overproduce and dump billions of tons of food at the same time that 20 million kids per year die to starvation and diseases associated with lack of clean water.

Well, that's my point.
Wanting to share your food resource is noble alright, but if you know that what could be given to those 3rd world countries is thrown away instead... ins't it useless ?

Good move, but am not sure it affects anything. :)

Hmm, yah, I acknowledge that more people could be fed if the foodstuffs were distributed more reasonably. I'm also aware that even if the well-fed persons of the world consumed less, the excess probably wouldn't reach those who would need it but would be thrown away. If we wan't to change something, perhaps it is that then where we should begin.

Sagefin!!! Where did you get that sig? I have a "The Blood of Ages" poem in my HDD and that line is not in it. The theme of the poem is very much in line with your sig, im wondering if the one in my HDD is incomplete. You got an URL?

On topic: Every "veggie" burger pattie is made of that stuff. Doesnt taste bad. In fact, if you put ketchup on it, it tastes like ketchup! ;)

Fungi? We have many kinds of "artificial meat" here, mostly made from soy proteins. It really tastes like meat and feels like meat. We even took such soy meat when we went mountain-hiking several times, and even under extremely hard workloads in high altitude and low temperature we didn't feel any difference from normal nutrition (conserves and sublimated meat). It tastes better then sublimated meat, that is usually made from tails, horns and tendons.

JFYI: during the War civilain ration cards included something like "1kg of fresh meat OR 100g of dry mushrooms". The problem is that fungi proteins are not assimilated as good as animal proteins.

And Sagefin, next time you say, "Like you Americans" please be sure to check the guy's place of origin in the sidebar.

How's the weather over there in ****BELGIUM****, Saintaw?

Hans.

P.S.  Screw vegitarians.  The next time I see one of those salamanders say they'll never eat meat, but is wearing leather shoes I'm going to go ballistic.

Eating cows is not wrong.  Cows eating us and strapping us to their feet is.

Obviously you never came here LtHans...because if you DID, you wouldn't ask about weather :D
(rains 320 days /year here)

Sagefin is probably right, someone should start I guess :)

Have you been eating mushrooms too or is there a misunderstanding here somewhere?

Heh sagefin, he was being a smartass because of my mistake in nationality, at the same time when he had the case of mistaken identity. I was the one saying 'you americans' without looking the nationality of the poster.

However it doesn't matter if it's american, european or asian as long as the country is enjoying the western standards of living.

it doesnt taste like chicken...it has similar texture to chicken and without flavouring it tastes of nothing.

its like a denser textured mushroom.

really boring food , but then so is all the other vegie crap.

btw you are worrying about a fungus (natural type stuff) when your burger resteraunts serve the left overs of cows, brains and all in their burgers?

gotta love them though :) 2 all beef patties, special sauce , lettuce cheese pickles onions all in a sesami seed bun......YUM :)

Well, 90% of frozen "quick" food contains non-meat proteins, like soy. And it's the situation here in Russia, where we don't have all that junk-food technology and eat mostly natural products...

I'm afraid even to imagine what you guys in "capitalist countries"  (it's a joke) eat...
