Title: Compression and filters
Post by: AKIron on March 23, 2002, 04:11:02 PM
Here's a very short clip for comparing a few filters. Short because I've included it uncompressed and unfiltered as a reference.

This one was dumped straight from the AH film viewer with out compression. Available soon. If link doesn't work try again later.
Uncompressed, no filters - 18MB (http://lynn.freewebspace.com/stuff/uncompressed.avi)

This one uses Mpeg4-2 and no filters.
Mpeg4-2, no filters - 306K (http://lynn.freewebspace.com/stuff/mpegv4-2.avi)

This one uses Mpeg4-2 and the level filter in Virtualdub.
Levels filter - 246K (http://lynn.freewebspace.com/stuff/levels.avi)

This one uses Mpeg4-2 and the blur and temporal smoother filters.
Blur and temporal smoother - 112K (http://lynn.freewebspace.com/stuff/blurandtsmoother.avi)

This one uses Mpeg4-2 and the blur, temporal smoother and sharpen filters.
blur, temporal smoother and sharpen - 146K (http://lynn.freewebspace.com/stuff/blurtsmoothersharpen.avi)

This one uses Divx and no filters.
Divx, no filters - 582K (http://lynn.freewebspace.com/stuff/divix.avi)

This one uses Divx and the level filter.
Divx, levels filters - 322K (http://lynn.freewebspace.com/stuff/divixlevels.avi)

This one uses Divx, the level filter, and temporal smoother filter.
Divx, levels and temporal smoother filters - 250K (http://lynn.freewebspace.com/stuff/divixlevelstsmoother.avi)

Not real pleased with Quicktime but here's one demonstrating some of it's effects using greyscale and dust and scratches.
Quicktime greyscale and aged - 743K (http://lynn.freewebspace.com/stuff/qtfiltered2.mov)

This one uses Real Producer Basic (free download)
Real Producer Basic - 330K (http://lynn.freewebspace.com/stuff/uncompressed.rm)

great comparisons!

that helps put things into perspective about a raw uncompressed AVI vs one with a codec as well as after production filtering.

thx Iron!

Added a few more samples. Check the first post. Still trying to upload the uncompressed avi. Waiting for my host to increase my file size. If you have trouble seeing some of the differences, blow it up full screen.

After comparing mpeg4-2, divx, and real producer I've concluded that real producer does the best job with size vs quality. If you blow each up full screen (ctrl 3 for real player) and watch carefully around the outline of the plane you'll see more compression artifacts in mpeg and divx than with rm.

If anyone knows how to add sound to rm files without dropping $200 for real producer plus I sure would like to hear it. Not interested in warez.

Adding sound to Real Producer Basic was simpler than I expected. While I didn't find a way to do it within Real Producer Basic, I simply added the sound using VirtualDub and saved the avi as uncompressed. I then opened the avi with Real Producer Basic and saved as .rm. The sound was included.

Gonna play around with it some more, looks to me like this may be the best way to go.

Add some filters with VirtualDub to make it smaller. Save as uncompressed. Then load it into Real Producer.

nah pimpjoe something wrong there...........

even straight uncompressed out ah film viewer into real producer will compress a 4 min film under 34mb......

Shoulda asked Pimpjoe, what is the size of the uncompressed file? What size and frame rate did you use to record it? These two things affect the size dramatically.
