Title: A good modern jet sim???
Post by: N1kPaz on March 26, 2002, 10:13:43 PM
I am looking to purchase a realistic jet sim which allows for the hosting of 16 player h2h arenas. I know just about every game allows this, but I want one which also has realistic flight modelling, etc. I have been looking into Janes USAF and even downloaded the demo. Anyone have any recommendations???

Don't know if you can get to 16 players, but Falcon 4.0 beats everything else.

Agreed, Falcon 4 and the Falcon Unified Team have really done a great job tweaking the program.  Word is they are developing Falcon 5.

Check their site for the updates, news, etc

Falcon 4.0 is just too good to be true...after the sp2 update the game really gets exciting. I'm still trying to figure out the weapons controls and everything else in the sp2 cockpit...if realism is what you seek then falcon 4.0 is a good choice

"Better" depends on if you value realistic flight models & avionics, or would prefer a sim that's closer to a Playstation game.

I actually like low tech.  Modern Jets are fun, but ONLY after you've sunk tons of hours into training to master all the MFDs and such.

I actually enjoyed Israeli Airforce quite a bit, but USAF was not as well done in my opinion (took hours to load and crashed alot).

I'm waiting for Project 1 (working title, as the offcial title isn't out yet).  Century series aircraft after Korea up to Vietnam.

"The last of the gunfighters".

Hans.

Ahem...well at the risk of blowing my own horn, I submit that Jane's F/A-18 and Jane's F-15 aren't exactly "playstation games".

I'd go with smut on that one.  F-15 and F/A-18 were very nice. But then there's U.S. Navy Fighters and such... somehow every fighter feels the same.

Of course, Falcon 4 still gets my vote (with realism patches).

Not modern jets, but I'd keep my eye on this game: Target Korea (http://www.targetware.net/)

It's in closed beta now.

I had TK on my laptop (one of tke developer guys attended Eurocon and we all had a go). It's OK and is flyable right now but those Sabre's and MiGs dogfights are slow;). You have to really watch your e-state and airspeed to remain airborne and in one piece:D.

Su-27 Flanker 2.* is good jet sim.

Now there is coming Lock On - Modern air combat (http://www.lo-mac.com./screenshots.php)

Didn't the flight modelling go backwards in the 2.x versions? Su-27 Flanker 1.5 Gold had some pretty frigging good flight and avionics modelling. Still has, if one doesn't mind the graphics.

S! SageFin!

Jep, I warmly remember Flanker 1.5. I strat sims with that.

Dunno about FM F 1.5 vs 2

Unfortunetly I lost my copy of 1.0 and I only have 1.5 upgrade CD.
It would be fun to try it again.

dobe i think if you reread my post you will see that it is fairly obvious (to anyone of modest intelligence) that realism is what I am looking for.

Try Flanker 2.5 before LOMAC comes out.

i would say janes f18 would be one of the best if it werent for the terrible fps. somehow they managed to really fug up the coding or something in that game.. i get better fps in il2 than in janes and f18 doesnt look nearly as good (it doesnt look bad either, its just older). If f18 had double the fps it has it would be a great game. the avionics were very well done and dropping guided munitions looked just like what you see on tv.

btw snicker djv

well you know if you want the best sim to dogfight ai then i would have to say mig alley. its the only game where i can confidently say where i get tougher fights form the ai opponents than from human players online. put a mig on hero and its damn hard to beat him, he flies just like a human ace. now that nmig alley source is released someone should check out how they made the ai so smart.

You can't compare iL2 to F/A-18...iL-2 has no avionics, no ground radars, and a much smaller drawn distance. F/A-18 draws out 30 some miles in all directions from the players aircraft, while I doubt iL2 is close to half that...you just don't notice it because you don't have any systems (like a FLIR, or Maverick missile) that can see out that far.

That said, I don't think F/A-18 has a "terrible" FPS. Is it the fastest sim out there? No. Is there one sim out there that does everything F/A-18 does? No. For example, when some of these systems (i.e radar line of sight) are enabled in Falcon 4 (which shipped with them disabled, wonder why?) guess what happens to the framerate? And F4 still doesn't draw out as far as F/A-18 does.

There is no free lunch. Before you start accusing others of "fugging up" something they worked long and hard on, I suggest you learn a bit about coding yourself.
